Reap the Wild Top of the Pops

This edition of Top of the Pops from September 30th 1982 was a special show to celebrate 15 years of Radio One. Unfortunately it will not be shown on BBC4 because, amongst the many DJs featured, is Jimmy Savile. Could they really not have edited him out?

A very big thanks once again to Neil B for uploading this edition here to We Transfer
Obviously do not click it if you wish to avoid Jimmy Savile.

One hundred and eight-tehhhhhh!

30-9-82: Presenter: The Radio 1 D.J.’s (Live) (Radio 1 15th Anniversary Edition)

(26) DEXY’S MIDNIGHT RUNNERS – Jockey Jackie Wilson Said (I’m In Heaven When You Smile)
This follow up to Come on Eileen became the band's final top ten hit peaking at number 5. And it's THAT infamous performance, and it doesn't get repeated on any future show.

(29) ULTRAVOX – Reap The Wild Wind (video)
Peaked at number 12.

(31) IMAGINATION – In The Heat Of The Night
Made it to number 22.

(9) ADAM ANT – Friend Or Foe (D.J.’s dancing)
At is chart peak.

(30) THE PINKEES – Danger Games
Their only hit, reaching number 8.

(27) ROXY MUSIC – Take A Chance With Me (danced to by Zoo)
The band's final top 30 hit, moving up one place higher.

(14) MARI WILSON – Just What I Always Wanted
Still heading towards the top ten.

(1) MUSICAL YOUTH – Pass The Dutchie (video)
First of three weeks at number one.

(25) UB40 – So Here I Am (crowd dancing) (and credits)
At its peak.

>> The Radio 1 D.J.’s appearing on this show were David Jensen,
John Peel, Tony Blackburn, Andy Peebles, Dave Lee Travis, Jonathan King,
Jimmy Savile, Richard Skinner, Peter Powell, Paul Burnett, Paul Gambaccini,
Mike Read, Steve Wright, Anne Nightingale, Tommy Vance, Alexis Korner,
Adrian Juste, Adrian John, Simon Bates and Mike Smith.

Next up is October 7th 1982 hosted by, would you believe it, Jimmy Savile! So it also won't be shown on BBC4!

Do You Really Want to Top of the Pops Me?

Another bumper Top of the Pops-athon week begins with this John Peel hosted edition from September 23rd 1982, which was originally watched by 9.4 million viewers, making it the sixth most popular show on BBC1 this week.....

No, I'm not the bloke from Haysi Fantayzee!

23-9-82: Presenter: John Peel

(9) DAVID CHRISTIE – Saddle Up
Despite getting out his muscular biceps, David couldn't push Saddle Up any higher.

(17) FAT LARRY’S BAND – Zoom (video)
Their breakthrough hit also turned out to be their last when it peaked at number 2. I don't know if this was filmed especially for Top of the Pops, but it did feature a live vocal, and a bit of backing vocal from Fat Larry himself, on the drums.

(6) SHALAMAR – There It Is
Went up one more place. But edited out of the 7.30pm slot.

(18) DEPECHE MODE – Leave In Silence (video)
A video inspired it seems by the Generation Game, for a tune now at its peak.

(26) MUSICAL YOUTH – Pass The Dutchie (video)
About to rocket to number one. John Peel seemingly a very big fan.

(38) CULTURE CLUB – Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?
Making their debut on the show (although we did see Boy George last year dancing in the audience) with a song that would become the first of two number ones for this legendary 80's band.

(36) DOLLAR – Give Me Some Kinda Magic
Went up two more places and then we didn't see them again for another five years. And edited out of the early broadcast tonight.

(22) CHICAGO – Hard To Say I’m Sorry
After almost six years since we last saw Chicago with their number one If You Leave Me Now, they return to the charts and peaked at number 4. And what an excellent dance routine from Zoo couple Libra and Leo. They would definitely get a 'ten from Len' I think.

(15) EVELYN KING – Love Come Down ®
Still on its way towards number 7.

(1) SURVIVOR – Eye Of The Tiger (video)
Final week at number one.

The next edition is September 30th 1982, s special show to celebrate 15 years of Radio One ~ but it features Jimmy Savile so won't be shown on BBC4. What would Jockey Wilson say?

Top of the Pops what I Always Wanted

Simon Bates is the host tonight for the 16th September 1982 edition of Top of the Pops, which was originally watched by 8.5 million viewers.

Mari hopes she hasn't misjudged the height of the Top of the Pops studio ceiling..

16-9-82: Presenter: Simon Bates

Mari and the boys get the show off to a hair raising start tonight with what became her only top ten hit when it peaked at number 8.

(5) THE JAM – The Bitterest Pill (I Ever Had To Swallow) (video)
Lots of snogging and discontented brides in a video that oddly reminds me a little of the one for Wham's Last Xmas, though without all the xmassy stuff. Number 2 was the peak.

(28) SIMPLE MINDS – Glittering Prize
An alarmingly anemic Jim Kerr sings this full blooded follow-up to Promised You a Miracle, which became the band's second top 20 hit of the year when it made it to number 16.

(27) UB40 – So Here I Am ®
Went up two more places, but edited out of tonight's 7.30 pm showing.

(24) SHAKATAK – Invitations
"One of the best live bands around" our host informs us and they certainly get the crowd going, though the song got no higher in the charts.

(6) ABC – All Of My Heart (video)
Sadly edited out of tonight's 7.30 broadcast, it went up one more chart place.

(14) TALK TALK – Today
Also edited out of the early showing, it was at its chart peak.

(22) ADAM ANT – Friend Or Foe (video)
Another great video from Adam Ant, with a tune going back to his earlier sound, this was his penultimate top ten hit, reaching number 9.

(17) CARLY SIMON – Why
Zoo do some quite painful looking ballet pirouettes to Carly's first hit for five years, with Chic lending a helpful hand to get this up to number 10.

(1) SURVIVOR – Eye Of The Tiger (video)
Third of four weeks at number one.

(8) GRANDMASTER FLASH & THE FURIOUS FIVE – The Message (crowd dancing) (and credits)
At its peak.
