Gayle Tuesday as this week's presenter, Good Lord bring back Dale Winton - I mean was this for real?
ReplyDeleteApparently her real name was Brenda Gilhooly who played this dumb blonde character and Page 3 girl Gayle Tuesday, and what a broad cockney accent!
U2 - interestingly played again at No.6 having previously been at a peak of No.2 in the same chart run. How did that work? Well they got a reprieve, as they went up this week to No.6, after having fallen below that the previous week, but worth another play to follow Seal's other Batman Forever single on the previous show, so July 1995 was all about Batman Forever! Great video though.
Take That - quite sad in a away that this was their first single without Robbie Williams who went on to a more secure solo career which worked out very well for him, but for me the face of Take That was always Gary Barlow, who was also the standout performer of the group.
I once saw Gayle Tuesday performing her stand-up routine at a comedy night in London in the early 90's. She was very funny.
DeleteGood Lord, just this TOTP appearance by her as presenter was too much for me!
DeleteChart rundown - I spotted that Amy Grant was still climbing at No.20 and could consider herself unlucky not to get another play, but when the first two plays on TOTP were on video, it would have to be a third play of the video which would have been unrealistic when not getting to No.1, as I don't think that she ever performed in the TOTP studio which could have got her a third play if she was available.
ReplyDeleteAlso Kylie Minogue with a new entry at No.16 was left out of the TOTP roster this week, and I can't think of another similar situation where Kylie's Top 20 single was not featured on the show, as the single fell down the charts the following week.
Weezer at No.37 with their follow up to their recent opening single with the video featuring the Happy days set, were also outside of the TOTP list of singles for the show, and also lost out, falling out of the Top 40 the following week.
Gayle Tuesday. Not funny in 2023. Wasn't funny in 1995. Probably would have got a laugh in 1975.
ReplyDeleteAlways liked CORONA's "Try Me Out". Decent pop-dance number to open the show.
In the drawer marked "whatever happened to" it's DANA DAWSON with the radio friendly "3 Is Family". Always liked this one. She did apparently have another 2 Top 40 hits but this is the only one I can recall and bought it at the time.
PAUL WELLER with a ballad. "You Do Something To Me" has stood the test of time. Nice British summer vibe to the video as well. Huge talent and a run of great singles in the 90s.
SOUL II SOUL with their best number since 1991. Rather fond of "Love Enuff" and great to hear it again in full.
Three repeats in a row from SHAGGY (nice enough), U2 (unnecessary but love the video) and DIANA KING (shiny new performance and quality tune).
TAKE THAT growing out of the boy band look (ironically shedding Robbie will be ultimately be the making of them). The hugely edited "Never Forget" gets it's first outing on the show. A really really good pop song. Choir really works on this as well.
