  1. New presenter Wendy Lloyd looked amazing in her summer dress, and would have loved a good cuddle there. My generation and only a year younger than me! Wonder what she's doing now?

Shaggy ft Rayvon - what was it about Mungo Jerry's 1970 single that attracted so much 90s attention. First it was Whigfield's second single Another Day at the start of the year which TOTP2 said the Jerry lawyers were out on that one for similarities, and now the same song title In The Summertime by Shaggy & Rayvon which I presume was passed through ok, but there is nothing like the original!

Chart Rundown - Good Lord, Blondie back in the charts with Heart Of Glass for the first time since being No.1 with it in February 1979, but got no play on TOTP this week as a new entry at No.15, and would not get another change, as it tumbled down after that. Also Boyz II Men peaking at No.24 with Water Runs Dry, with no TOTP slot for this seventh Top 30 single since their debut and most successful single End Of The Road got to No.1 in 1992.

Michael Jackson - the song and video sounded more like a Christmas single fighting for the Christmas No.1, but not in mid-July which was presumably quite warm judging by Wendy Lloyd's summer dress as presenter in the studio.

  2. I've only watched this of the two '95 editions. Neither looked very good and I'm more fussed about the re-repeats now. I'm just finding these latest editions too slick with not enough good music but I know that there's plenty of brilliant things still to come. Anyway gave this one a watch and it had some fine moments though still below the quality it had been a few months before.
Wendy Lloyd was awful as a presenter with that blank, pouty, into it s'ppose voice that you heard so much of at that time.

Diana King; Brilliant start with a real mid '90s soul/dance gem. Belting melody to that. Not so sure about lyrics. Good to have a bloke that's shy then he won't disappear with someone else seems to be the main point. Again though marvellous tune and a sentiment kinder than an all men are shits one. Great voice she had too. Odd that a singer as powerful as her couldn't get another big hit in the UK.

Shaggy feat. Rayvon; These were still jolly times overall and Reggae still a major force in the charts so this re-working of the Mungo Jerry hit was always going to be big even though its very formulaic sounding. Good to see Shaggy back and soon to be back at the top of the charts.

Bobby Brown; Memorable but it's a pity that after the brilliance of 'Two Can Play That Game' he should something that owes so much to 'My Perogative' Same rhythm, similar sound, mic thing back again. Also the video with endless attractive silhouettes emerging from or going to somewhere with lots of steam and searchlights could've been made at any time since 1990. Charts worth a mention. The majestic 'Stars' by Dubstar at No.40. I never stopped playing 'Disgraceful ' through 1996 and really look forward to seeing them on the show.

E.M.F with Reeves and Mortimer; Love both of them but this is pointless and unfunny. E.M.F were on stage as well apparently.

Michael Jackson; A Jacko video. Well almost half the show has already gone so it won't be too long at least. A pretty enough weepy with some very striking graphics but didn't really float or fly my boat.

    D: Ream; Fast forwarded, sorry.

Amy Grant; She looks great in this video and the images paint the appropriate picture of nature's loss but it comes over a little throwaway. Still it's a nice coincidence that a Joni Mitchell song should get featured just a few weeks after she's turned 80. 'Ladies Of The Canyon ' from which the original version comes, I've been listening to a lot in 2023. I'll be looking to get an original of 'Clouds' next but it's an expensive pasttime collecting Joni Mitchell LPs.

P J Harvey; She got a brief spot on the breakers in '93 with 'Fifty Foot Queenie' and at last making a studio debut. For me easily the show highlight and 'C'mon Billy' still powerful. An understated performance, it would be hard to believe this was the same woman who dressed in bright pink with scary makeup at Glastonbury just a week earlier.

The Outhere Brothers; Yes back again.
Odd how a studio audience need to do only a shouted response and still sound hopelessly out of tune.

Wendy says goodbye and to the end offers no real indication of whether she valued the experience or not.
Gawd. Are the production team now just closing their eyes and pointing at random pages in the music monthlies for the playout item? Heavy Stereo the next up and its very sullen and cool and sharp and jerky and heading to 46. The logo crash was most welcome this time.

  3. Just seen that Denny Laine has sadly passed away. It was only a week or so that I was commenting on the recent 1978 repeat with 'Mull of Kintyre' which Denny co-wrote. RiP

    1. I didn't know that Denny was in The Moody Blues before he joined Wings. I only heard that in the news yesterday when they announced his passing.

    2. Rip Denny. What a great man. 'Go Now' an absolute classic and what an amazing vocal. He must have been only 20 when he recorded it. Then such wonderful contribution in Wings and he wrote 'Say You Don't Mind' which is a perfect song.

  5. Four songs peaking this week outside the Top 40, three of which were 80s legends still releasing new music in 1995, and all of which arrived at the end of the line in 1995 in chart career terms.

No.50 Boy George - Il Adore
Penultimate single from him, having had his final Top 40 hit already as far back as 1993, this year of 1995 was to be his final year of releasing new singles and all three singles failed to make the Top 40.

No.52 Vanessa Williams - The Way That You Love
Apart from a top 3 single in 1992, all her singles since 1988 failed to make the Top 40 in the UK, and this her penultimate single did no better, but shortly after, her final single Colors Of the Wind would reach No.21 a couple of months later.

    No.57 N-Joi - Bad Things
Having been around since 1990, with 91-92 being their most successful era, this new single in 1995 was to be their final single, having failed to make the Top 40 since 1993 with a No.33 effort called The Drumstruck EP.

    No.69 Jaki Graham - Absolute E-Sensual
Fifth and also final single since 1986 when she had her last Top 40 single with Step Right Up getting to No.15, the 1987-1995 era produced 5 singles with a best position of No.44, and hence why we have not seen her on TOTP since 1986.

  6. Strangely I don't remember Wendy Lloyd at all but she does a decent enough presenting job.

Did Jamaica fly in or was it by choice? Big new entry from the fabulous looking DIANA KING. "Shy Guy" has always been a favourite of mine. Wonderful tune, great vocal. Another great 95 record.

SHAGGY (and RAYVON) continue the summer reggae takeover with their version of "In The Summertime". Summer vibes aplenty and whilst not going to change the world it's a decent number that always sounds great in the sun.

BOBBY BROWN gets a sped up version of "Humpin’ Around" which actually improves it.

Good to see the E.M.F./REEVES & MORTIMER performance of "I’m A Believer" again. Really enjoyed that.

MICHAEL JACKSON singing about his lost "Childhood" which should be melancoly and moving but turns into a twee Disney tune (and a terrible one a that) with it's Free Willy link. I think MJ missed a trick here to properly connect with people by taking the movie dollar.

D:REAM know how to Entertain us and this is a much stronger performance of "Shoot Me With Your Love" which is fast growing on me.

P.J. HARVEY was suddenly cool in the mid 90s but she did nothing for me. I didn't hate "C’Mon Billy" but I'm not likely to dig out any of her tunes either.

THE OUTHERE BROTHERS take the top spot. The audience were never this animated for the Soldier boys! BOOM!

Indie at it's most average from HEAVY STEREO to play out.
