I thought the Top of the Pops review of 2023 was a good show but couldn't help but be a little sad especially when they showed some clips of some artists we've lost and you could see the show as it was and should be. The interview with two of Ezra Collective was good and some enjoyable clips. It does make you wonder though; if BBC go absolutely crazy for live music at Glastonbury why can't they show more at other times of the year? The argument that '"you can get it on YouTube " clearly isn't an issue at the end of June. I've said before they should revive a new version of 'Rock Goes To College'. Anyway it seems that new years eve 2021 was the last true TOTP edition.
Watching the TOTP christmas compilation, the OTH noticed a great number OF the performers were chewing gum. Is there some particular reason they would be doing this?…
Did anyone see the Guy Garvey From the Vaults christmas special around 1am on christmas eve? I had no idea it was on and caught it about 20 mins in. I had to get to bed as christmas eve is madly busy in our house and recorded it but the picture broke up. There was a fascinating clip of Steeleye Span from what looked like the 1970s doing 'Gaudete' on ITV but I didn't get to see what programme it was from. Would love to know and I hope it gets a repeat as christmas archive music clips from ITV are as rare as Rudolph's nose hair.
Thanks it was a great clip. The only example I know of a track that fades up to its loudest point then immediately begins to fade out. Not sure if it was the single version or the album version but that's how it is on a Christmas compilation I still have. I think 'Step Into Christmas ' from a Gilbert O'Sullivan special was on the programme as well. Pity it won't get another showing till next December. Anyway happy new year!
The Guy Garvey series on Sky Arts draws from the ITV vaults of the 70s and 80s stored in Leeds as mentioned at the start of each programme, and uses a lot of clips from the Tyne Tees series Razzmataz which was a sort of TOTP competitor but involved a teenage audience specifically in the studio, with similar chanting to Cheggers Plays Pop, but was all pop and no competitions or games on the show.

ReplyDeleteHi Mic. I did see it, but can’t recall the show the clip was from. I think it was 1973/1974 though.
DeleteFrom the Vaults is always a good watch, and it does get repeated now and again.
The Steeleye Span clip was from "Russell Harty Plus" on March 3rd 1973.
