    1. Rocky Sharpe & The Replays - I always thought that this took a leaf out of Showaddywaddy's book, especially the Waddy's usual openings of their tunes by Buddy Gask, and Showaddywaddy were of course in the same Top 30 this week with Pretty Little Angel Eyes.

Hot Chocolate - one of their finest masterpieces this one, and my earliest remembrance of them, as I had only got into the pop charts in 1978 and this was an exceptional Christmas tune and video!

Mankind - with the Dr Who theme music which was with Tom Baker as the current Doctor in 1978, and not sure if the Mankind tune was the original, considering Dr Who had already been going for 15 years since 1963.

Barbra Steisand & Neil Diamond - pity there was never a video for this, and in those days Legs & Co were ready for action when TOTP had no footage of the song performers, and this was a classic also for Legs & Co to dance to!

    2. Hot Chocolate - classic Don Black lyrics to a Geoff Stephens tune from a musical called 'Dear Everyone'

    3. This was another one I think I missed on 1st repeat. Good to see Tony Blackburn appear again possibly channeling The King Singers in his pre Christmas attire. Would be great to see more of him next year.
A real classic to appear with charts. I discovered via Scott Mills' birthday game on Radio 2 that the late Maurice White's birthday was yesterday. There's also a delightful TOTP moment from 1980 featuring him and Verdine with Peter Powell linking into 'Stop The Cavalry'. I saw them from near the front at Glastonbury 2016. Fantastic group.

Rocky Sharpe & The Replays; This cover of 'Rama Lama Ding Dong' gets an feature even though it sits at lowly 55. 'Grease' effect I suppose. Maybe more edgy and theatrical than the 'Wad but without the half '50s half '70s voice of Dave Bartram. Good way to kick things off however.

Hot Chocolate; Beautiful reflective number from the group. I really must one day buy one of their albums, their singles are so full of variety. Super impressive belt on Errol. Obviously for the Christmas Market with choirs and candles and a cover which could possibly have taken a little part of its tune from the Carol 'O Holy Night'. Think I have the faintest memory of hearing this around the time.

Buzzcocks; Preferred it this time around.

Elkie Brooks; I watched this with my parents and my Dad and I both agreed on her fabulous hairstyle and her fabulous voice.

Mankind; I've heard of this single but don't think I've ever heard it before. Some cutting to the Tom Baker intro sequence amongst the close up of band members who tbh don't look like this is their normal style of music. Good fun, not as daft as the Timelords use of the theme and nowhere near as futuristic as the original version from 1963. Apparently I would run out of the room the moment the theme tune started when I was very small (ie around this time) so I wouldn't have been very familiar with this single even if it did get a lot of airplay.

No Darts, that'll be on another channel at this time of year (ho ho) or The Barron Knights or Ian Dury and Co so on to a very balletic L&C dancing to Barbra Streisand and Neil Diamond. I was doing my Neil Diamond impersonation all the way through that. Patti doing ballet moves was a highlight of my day. A curious background for them which is not an earth shattering development for 1978, this one like Munch's 'The Scream' turned to monochrome and with the screaming figure removed. But overall very effective and hypnotic. Hurry up with another '78 routine.

Chic; 'Chick'. Great band. Interesting Tony's rather downcast end link regarding their relative lack of success in the UK. Soon to make up for that and how could they not with a single as genius as 'Le Greal'. And all the product of not being allowed into 'Studio 54' for the New Years Eve party in 1977. Absolute masters.

Elton John; The big cap performance of 'Song For Guy' and my first musical memory of Elton. Haunts me still. Performed under two giant after dinner mints.

Boney M; The Christmas single that made my older sister cry. She's never been able to explain why. A twinkly hymn from long long ago. Liz's half caught out giggle to camera near the end one of my favourite moments of Christmas tv.

Thanks Tony. See you soon. Maybe in pre '76 guise next year? You can hope.

  2. Much better show this week with Mark Goodier back in charge.

Chart rundown video - second remix of Blue Monday for 1995, with the original in 1983 and first remix in 1988. Videos were made only for the second and third incarnations of this song, as in 1983 New Order were not really known before this first single of theirs, and possibly had to prove some chart success before being given a video budget. Anyway the new 1995 remix had a video akin to Felix or The Pet Shop Boys in style.

Chart rundown - did anyone spot Shampoo back in the Top 40 at No.36 on the chart rundown with a re-issue of Trouble which was only in the chart the previous summer getting to No.11 in 1994? Good Lord, not sure why it was re-issued now only one year on, and not surprised it peaked only at No.36 on second outing!

Black Grape - I don't remember this from the time, but now having seen it on two recent TOTP editions I must say its growing on me, and quite like the mix of music styles to include rap and soul on top of their own indie.

Pet Shop Boys - Paninero was a real classic on any dance floor, but this TOTP performance was not as good as the single, as the stage performance seemed to be somewhat dreary for such an upbeat track, and not sure why the main singer was standing in front of a guest girl on stage sitting on a chair behind him with an instrument and not doing anything with it if not singing. Good Lord!

    1. ELP - just loved the costumes on Legs & Co doing the Emerson Lake & Palmer classic, with only Carl Palmer still with us, and RIP the other two.

Manhattan Transfer - epitomising the romantic 70s before the intense techy and unromantic 80s came along. The costumes on this were just amazing and a snapshot of a time where love was in the air.

Space - Magic Fly was one of those underrated ingles which was a precursor to 80s groups like The TimeLords which resembled a bit of Magic Fly.

  4. So we are officially back in 1995 world on BBC4 next week so time to enter August 1995. Start of the last holiday period where the whole family was at home. Brother about to depart for University and then France full time.

Goody-bags means a steady ship this week for quite an eclectic mix of tune.

Not a huge THERAPY? fan but "Loose" was quite enjoyable. Distracted for most of this by the facial hair.

Decent dance/pop from CORONA and then yet another remix of "Blue Monday". Does NEW ORDER having 21 hits count if 3 of them were the same song? Great video though. As for the remix, I've always been a fan of the 88 7" mix myself.

BLACK GRAPE are back together and with a new single out (which is truly awful). "In The Name Of The Father" is a timely reminder of how good this lot were first time around. Nice to see TOTP not stupid enough to give Shaun a live mic.

LEFTFIELD feat. DJUM DJUM – Afro-Left. Afro-lutley not my cup of tea.

PET SHOP BOYS with the second 80s remix of the night. "Paninaro ‘95" a wonderful club tune and a big favourite of mine. Glad it was a hit.

This TRICKY video is like going on a trip(hop). Not my scene but I can appreciate that this is a decent enough tune that has stood the test of time.

Gladiators is back on the TV! Hooray! BLUR....ready? OASIS....ready? 3, 2, 1, GO!
BLUR first out of the blocks with "Country House". They will win the battle but OASIS will win the war with their all conquering "What's The Story..." album. This is a belter of a tune from BLUE though. Absolutely love this.

A seventh and well deserved Number One from TAKE THAT. Top draw pop tune is "Never Forget".

Then a snippet of one of my all time favourite tunes from TLC. Hopefully we will get more of this.
