I've noticed you around, um, I find you very attractive, um, the 6th of November 1998 edition of Top of the Pops!
Top bed hit
6-11-98: Presenter: Kate Thornton
(9) ALANIS MORISSETTE – Thank U
Fully clothed and getting the show underway but the song had already peaked at number 5.
(10) BILLIE – Girlfriend
A second studio performance of the former number one.
(8) AEROSMITH – I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing (via satellite)
Had peaked at number 4.
(3) TOUCH & GO – Would You…?
Performing their only hit and it got no higher.
(6) PRAS – Blue Angels
Here tonight but got no higher.
(5) ANOTHER LEVEL – Guess I Was A Fool
In the studio with their third of seven top ten hits and it was at its peak.
(12) M-PEOPLE – Testify
Performing their eighteenth of nineteen top 40 hits but it got no higher.
(1) CHER – Believe (and credits)
A second studio performance for her second of seven weeks at number one.

Touch & Go - this seemed to take over from The Beautiful South's originality on the previous week's show, with originality of its own, and I must say this came off very well, even though it had very few words, but at the same time very sexy tune and dancing on stage by the sexy latin-costumed couple.
ReplyDeleteI noticed on the chart rundown a new entry at No.13 by Sham Rock called Tell Me Ma, and I was curious from the short video clip to watch the whole video, and this was something really special, a raunchy tune from (Northern?) Ireland with sexy Riverdance dancing and amazing costumes, and would recommend a watch of the video, and you will feel good all weekend:

Possibly Ireland's answer to Cotton Eye Joe, but a hundred times better in my opinion. By the fact that TOTP played nothing lower than No.12 on the chart this week, Sham Rock missed out on a play at No.13 in what would have trumped everything else on the show if it got onto it somehow.
Phil Collins with a new entry at No.26 also missed out on a play on the show with his version of Cyndi Lauper's True Colours, and a new entry at a peak of No.84 this week was Marc Almond with Black Kiss.
Hi Angelo, could you put up the November 1977 TOTP shown on BBC4 tonight after the two 1998 episodes, as it had some really good stuff worth commenting on?

DeleteNew entry? Good Lord, it was about to remain in the singles chart for months after this. Getting us prepared on this edition.
Darts - most famous of their hit singles and most remembered no doubt. Very dynamic and potent sound.
Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers -
Looks like Sue Mehenick and Lulu of Legs & Co got the short straw to be in the camel outfit and covered up, while the other girls got to show off their lovely bodies.
Although the November 1984 TOTP edition also shown last night on BBC4 is not on this blog, I would like to mention The Kane Gang as the lowest chart position to be featured on the show at No.38 with a new entry called Respect Yourself, turned out to be the best performance on the show, and was that PP Arnold on guest vocals with them?
I didn't see the Nov '84 one on first repeat so that was a real treat, featuring 'I Feel For You', my all time favourite chart topper at No.1. 'Teardrops' was another pleasure to watch, played much that Christmas and New Year in our house as it was the penultimate track on 'The Hits Album' bought for my sister as a Christmas present that year. Very underrated song with the unmistakable guitar of Hank Marvin. Nice memories.

Exclusive REM – Daysleeper performance on second edition.
Cheers Rob. Love me some REM
DeleteThanks Rob!!!
DeleteMore rare stuff on the way from the latest Totp listings. I hoped there would be a good amount of '76 next year 50 years on. Yes! 8th Jan (in the BBC archives) is being repeated and 22nd Jan (rare). Is that one from David Hamilton's own collection? If so thank you Diddy! Some fine things on those editions.
ReplyDeleteAlso the 2006 Totp2 Christmas special was a treat last Saturday because of the showing of the totp film for John Lennon's Happy Xmas (War Is Over)! Wow. Beautiful to watch and I think only shown on this special since it's broadcast on the 14th December '72 edition.
Technically we could be getting the recently February'76 episodes - it would be nice back-to-back though - 12/2 and 25/3 have Marmalade at the start of the programme and the gollywog is on their drum kit. It is a similariton on the 20/5/76 episode, with the BBC could able to edit that out on both episodes.
DeleteThat would be fantastic if they showed them. I'm assuming they will include all the lost Hamilton ones for a 50 year package. What a legend is Diddy. It will be great to see on TV, a show (2 in fact) that features Bohemian Rhapsody while it was on its 9 week run at the top! I guess the 8/1/76 will be a first repeat ever on BBC too.
DeleteBe nice if they could start showing some DLT editions now too. Surely, enough time has now passed? The guy wasn't even sent to prison.
DeleteI know. It would be great to see him on there again. Totally agree.
