Wonderwall of the Pops

I don't believe that anybody feels the way I do about the 9th of November 1995 edition of Top of the Pops!

I believe we've been pipped to the post again

(13) RUFFNECK feat. YAVAHN – Everybody Be Somebody
Performing their only top 40 hit and it got no higher.

In the studio tonight but the song got no higher.

(12) THE ROLLING STONES – Like A Rolling Stone  (video)  (and charts)
The first single from their top ten live album, Stripped, and it was at its peak.

(11) SAINT ETIENNE feat. ETIENNE DAHO – He’s On The Phone

(NEW) WHALE – Hobo Humpin’ Slobo Babe
Had previously peaked at number 46 a year earlier, this time around this screamer made it to number 15.

(6) EVERYTHING BUT THE GIRL – Missing
A second studio performance and the song went up three more places.

(2) OASIS – Wonderwall
In the studio tonight with the third single from their number one album, What's the Story Morning Glory, but number two was its peak.

(NEW) DAVID BOWIE – Strangers When We Meet

  1. Ace Of Base - first single from this group in nearly a year, and did anyone spot the caption mistake/typo error on the song title at the start of the song? I read Lucky Cove instead of Lucky Love. I mean doesn't anyone in the TOTP production team proof-read before the final show goes out? Good Lord!

Chart rundown video - The Rolling Stones new video and strangely their highest chart position for 12 years since Undercover Of The Night peaked at No.11 in November 1983. Interesting that it took a Bob Dylan song to cover, with the same name in song title as the group!

Also on the chart rundown, four new entries by Elvis Presley, Bruce Springsteen, Luther Vandross, and D-Ream, were all at peak and all missed out on TOTP for their current single.

Saint Etienne - at last they are back after around a year out, and with their highest ever chart position to date across 11 singles since coming onto the scene in 1991, this new studio performance I thought was spoiled by the disco and strobe effects.

David Bowie - is this also his first single in the TOTP studio since the late 1980's? I seem to recall he last appeared in the TOTP studio in 1987 but I can't remember anything else there since, so this was a bit like doing a UB40 with the same gap of 8 years between TOTP studio performances to come back in 1995.

Robson & Jerome - I always liked the Frankie Laine original from way back in 50s I think, but I also found this superb version and video by The Bachelors which was at No.3 for the whole of April 1964:

    1. Yep, the Bachelors version is my favourite. Checkout their pretty fine cover of 'The Sound of Silence' which reached No3 over here, whilst the original didn't chart at all (but reached No1 in the States).

    1. Yes, thanks Rob. A nice set of music pieces in Recorded For Recall January 1978. Also, in the Tomorrow's Hits section , I didn't know that Enya came out with a new album in 1995, as her late 80s stuff was about all that she had success with, so it was nice to see TOTP2 playing her new video as part of this section.

  3. Missed the Diana Ross At The BBC special last night. Did anyone see it? There was an opportunity for one rare Totp clip; a film (I think Totp made, not a promo) for 'You Are Everything' her duet with Marvin Gaye which survives from 11th April 1974 edition. That would've been a treat but it doesn't look like it featured.

    1. I remember seeing that Diana Ross video clip on a surviving TOTP 1974 episode and assumed it was the promo/video for the song, as in those days Ross had only recently appeared in the UK at The Royal Albert Hall in 1973, of which that whole show was shown last night on BBC2 straight after the Diana Ross at The BBC Special.

    2. "You Are Everything" was not on Diana Ross at the BBC. TOTP from 11-04-1974 will get a BBC4 repeat on April 12th next. Looks like it will be the complete 35 minute edition.

    3. Blimey, that would be brilliant. They're actually going pre '76? Next week we go almost back to the start of the repeats with 8th April 1976. Like 11th April '74 also an edition with Noel and a new one from Abba but I would love to see an older show.

    4. Brilliant that they're repeating 11th April 1974. That was one of my wishlist editions but I'd given up thinking that early ones would be shown. Hopefully there will be more this year. There's 29th April '71, also a rediscovered Everett in black and white. Maybe this is getting a showing because of the 50th anniversary of Abba's Eurovision success but maybe it will lead to a few more vintage editions on BBC4. Has it been shown on the BBC or indeed any UK channel since original broadcast?

    5. It's most likely the first repeat of TOTP 11-04-1974 on British TV in 50 years. I can't recall any other occasion. UK Gold did not air it or any edition hosted by Noel Edmonds. It was on the German channel Eins Festival in 2009.

    6. Wow, can't wait to see this one in full. Roll on 12th April! Having just looked at the list of songs on that show, it looks like the Diana Ross/Marvin Gaye duet is the highlight of the show, and it will be interesting how Pans People are dressed for their dance routine to The Chi-lites, as I haven't seen Pans People on TOTP for ages.

    7. Yes The Pan's People clip is a classic. It played during the end credit sequence for the documentary on them as part of the 30th anniversary of the programme in 1994. I'm looking forward to seeing The Wombles on BBC4! Also another treat on Saturday 6th April with another collection of Abba Beeb clips. 'So Long' on TOTP will get shown.

  5. Ruffneck with a dance tune best described as atrocious. As Yazz once said, the only way is up.

Lucky Cove did that caption say? Don't remember this Ace of Base tune. Brunette still can't sing. Decent enough pop tune I suppose.

A very odd RS video. Never was a fan and this hasn't changed my mind. Nothing to get excited about so far tonight.

Finally something to shout about from Saint Etienne. Looking gorgeous sounding amazing. Tune of the night. By quite a way

And back to the trash with Whale. Almost made me blubber….sorry. Great showing off with the mic mate. What a Plank.

Hurrah another decent tune. EBTG with an absolute anthem. Mrs Morige liked her hairstyle and she's having a cut tomorrow. Will let u know next week if she comes back looking Iike Tracy.

How was this Oasis tune not Number One? Robbed. Their signature tune. Miming again though. Would have loved them to do a live version of this

You say Bow-ie I say Bo-wie. Good to see him but the tunes not up to much.

How do you guarantee a Number One single? Get people who don't usually buy records to buy them. 282,000 of them in one week Impressive.
See also Doop, Hear’Say, Jive Bunny….

We may have a winner for 1995s worst edition.

    Happy Easter 🐰

  6. Four new entries at peak position this week outside the Top 40 and worth a mention:

    No.42 C&C Music Factory - I'll Always Be Around
Last throw of the dice for the Factory, with their last Top 40 single having already come earlier in the year, this was to be their last ever single, and much like 2-Unlimited, it will be sad to see them go, as they were quite standout in the early 90s music scene, having come on to the scene in late 1990 with the iconic Gonna Make You Sweat.

No.43 Sheryl Crow - What I Can Do For You
Rare flop for Crow, as her last four singles in 1994-1995 comfortably made the Top 40.

No.58 Real McCoy - Automatic Lover (Call For Love)
Another last throw of the dice like C&C Music Factory, this was also to be the last single for Real McCoy with a very successful 1994-1995 era for them, starting out by being on MC Sar's single Another Night which got to No.2 in late 1994.

    No.89 Dave Stewart - Secret
Rare solo single from Dave, but following in the footsteps of Annie Lennox having a reasonably successful run of singles in the early 90s, this was a follow-up single to his No.36 achievement with Heart Of Stone a year earlier in 1994.

  7. Ruffneck - appalling vocals, no tune, and less lyrics than 2 unlimited

Ace of base - again poor vocals. Not their best tune

Rolling Stones - don’t remember this being a single. Pretty straight cover.

St etienne - highlight of the show so far.. she must have been hot in that outfit.

Whale - nice business with the singer and lee - had me fooled. Never heard of them. Two disparate tunes bolted together. Couldn’t decide if I liked it or hated it… she must have been hit in that outfit (2)

Everything but the girl - not a fan of the band in general, but love this one.

Oasis - like Vienna, a track you can’t believe only got to number two. And as with Vienna, blocked by a naff song.

David Bowie - live in the studio! All the old timers being persuaded to come into the studio instead of just sending a video. A bit subdued. (Reminded of the Smithereens track of the same name - a quick google shows that came later than Bowie)

Robson and Jerome - cue naff song…

  8. Ruffneck - alright. AoB - I like the song fine but it's not particularly original.

Rolling Stones - oh look they covered the song with their name in it how hilarious. (It's fine)

    Saint Etienne - brilliant stuff

Whale - great track but what a weird choice for an exclusive.

EBTG / Oasis -Two of the most iconic songs of the year back to back. Both more deserving of number one than that thing, but both will have a very long afterlife.

Bowie - always good to see him but this song isn't great.

That thing: Simon Cowell really did hate the British public, huh? This might be the worst thing he inflicted on us, though it's a crowded field.
