Sorted for E's and Top of the Pops

In the middle of the night, it feels just like the 5th of October 1995 edition of Top of the Pops!

Sorted for Louise

5-10-95:   Presenters:  Jed and Dave

(14) SLEEPER – What Do I Do Now?
Getting the evening underway but the song got no higher.

(5) SMOKIE feat. ROY CHUBBY BROWN – Living Next Door To Alice
A third time in the studio and the song went up another two places.

(15) CYPRESS HILL – Throw Your Set In The Air  (video)  (and charts)
Got no higher.

(22) OLETA ADAMS – Never Knew Love
Here to perform her third of four top 40 hits, but it got no higher.

(10) IRON MAIDEN – Man On The Edge  (via satellite)
At its peak.

(12) LOUISE – Light Of My Life
The former Eternal singer makes her solo studio debut to perform what became her first of nine top ten hits when it peaked at number 8.

(2) PULP – Sorted For E’s And Wizz
Performing the flip side of Mis-Shapes, but this impressive double A record could not quite be the number one the band deserved.

(NEW) NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS feat. KYLIE MINOGUE – Where The Wild Roses Grow
This unlikely duo are here tonight with a haunting song that will soon become a number 11 hit.

(1) SIMPLY RED – Fairground
Second of four weeks at number one.

(TOTP2) MADNESS – The Prince  (clip of TOTP 6-9-79)  (and credits)
Their debut hit and it made number 16 in 1979.

  1. Highlight of the show for me was the Kylie Minogue Nick Cave number in the studio with Kylie at the prettiest I've ever seen her, especially how she did her hair. Absolutely stunning, and oh the song was good too!

Smokie now moving into the Top 5 and warranting a third TOTP studio performance of the same song. Not sure how they hadn't got fed up with Roy Chubby Brown by now.

Chart rundown - a new entry at No.31 was Tears For Fears with Raoul And The Kings Of Pain, which was also at peak, so did not get played on the show during its chart run. It was also their final Top 40 single for 10 years until 2005 with Closest Thing To Heaven which peaked at No.40.

    1. Thanks Rob, reliable as ever.

Still completely mesmerised by Kylie Minogue's appearance and dress in the recap section of the main TOTP show this week. She looked amazing with fellow Australian Nick Cave in a musical direction far away from Kylie's customary pop and fun sound.

In Recorded For Recall April1979, I liked the Village People video for In The Navy, and I always rated this single ahead of YMCA mainly on the strength of the video, as a US navy ship location was somewhat surprising and creative for a video at the time, and coupled with their fun costumes on board the ship, it made for great viewing.

in the playout clip of The Who to celebrate John Entwistle's birthday, the TOTP2 presenter mistakenly said 54th birthday, when it should be 51st birthday. Entwhistle died a few years later in 2002, a day before the first show of The Who's US tour.

  3. I was away last weekend so four episodes to catch up on!

This was a good start to my marathon (although the Hale and Pace characters did nothing for me)

I really like Sleeper's first two albums, and have been revisiting them a bit lately. I do miss how Britpop songs were so story-oriented.

Smokie- Still here then? Who the bleep is buying it?

What a Pops combo we have with Smokie-Cypress Hill-Oleta Adams- Iron Maiden - Louise - Pulp - Nick and Kylie.

That kind of eccentric lineup is why this show is so missed. I adore Pulp and I'd forgotten they got to do Sorted... on the show. Vaguely risky at the time. Nick and Kylie is just a fab song (though I'm a fan of both so it's perfect for me) and I agree, she looks great here.

  4. More comic nonsense from unfunny hosts. The down side of the new presenting roster.

Superb opener from Sleeper. Cool and hot, and that's just Louise. Quality tune and I enjoyed that.

Just awful noise from Cypruss Hill. The word is obviously Set. Not.

Now this is an improvement. Nice tune, nice vocals from Oleta. A bit of class.

Louise goes solo. Did she jump or was she pushed? Either way she is going to be fine. Would have liked to have hears her do this live though.

Pulp with a classy tune that upset the BBC as the CD sleeve showed you how to roll a spliff. Wonderful performance but not quite tune of the night.

Nick and Kylie. Who would have thought these 2 would deliver one of the 90s best tunes. Just haunting.
