21st of September is next
This episode was better than the previous but still not super exciting. Robbie was pretty awful at presenting (I think he was better when he presented with Mark?)
ReplyDeleteA couple of lesser dance tunes are a very OKish start, then the Foo Fighters are welcome though they're just warming up for better singles to come.
Lloyd Cole - shrug
Mariah - not my thing but I can ayee why people like this one.
Rembrandts - decent although age and endless Friends has made it a bit overdone since 1995.
N Trance - I get its appeal but it's no Se You Free.
Simply Red - two weeks in a row and it's not even in the charts yet? That's unusual. What on earth is Mick H wearing? I hate his voice but I do understand the appeal of the song itself, it had something a bit different.
Sorry Angelo. Anorak alert! Just to say that the end clip used of The Rolling Stones was actually from 26th January 1967. It survives via inclusion in the saved 26th December '67 show. Brian Jones wears exactly what he wears in a photo session in Green Park that month. Maybe the performance was from the same day. Just thought I'd mention that because it's one of the very rare instances of a surviving clip from that time. Back to my cobwebbed attic.
ReplyDeleteA huge improvement this week, but unfortunately not in presenting standards. Acouple of dance bangers to open up. Always had a soft spot for this D:REAM number. "Party Up The World" a nice lively start followed by a CAPPELLA number I'd forgotten but really enjoyed.
ReplyDeleteThe all conquering FOO FIGHTERS next. An OK tune is "I’ll Stick Around". Chart run-down gives us the joy that is Tokyo Ghetto Pussy! Not a clue.
LLOYD COLE is pleasant enough if uninspiring and then the show highlight for me from MARIAH CAREY. "Fantasy" probably the most "pop" thing she has done and it's really catchy and fun.
N-TRANCE with the floor filling "Stayin' Alive". Good version of this, wonder if they sampled or re-recorded the Bee Gees bit? RICARDO DA FORCE previously of KLF fame of course.
I'm trying, and failing, to remember where the "Fairground" drum sample comes from. Anyway something a bit different from Mick and SIMPLY RED. Great vocal and I was a big fan of this number. Good to hear it again.
The sample is from Goodmen’s Give It Up. Mick even gives them a namecheck in the “like all good men should” line.
DeleteAs I have mentioned before, that Goodmen tune Give It Up is right up there among the best intros of all time.
DeleteGreat intro. Got me thinking; Favourite intros for singles on Totp; Always loved the start of 'Motorcycle Emptiness'. Also 'Run For Home'. Another brilliant one is on its way soon; Cher, 'One By One'.
DeleteI would add You Spin Me Round (Like A Record) by Dead Or Alive from 1985, and Tainted Love by Soft Cell from 1981. Both were No.1 in the singles charts. I remember that these got people up onto the dance floor from their chairs.
DeleteYes definitely. Also another one for me would be Abba 'One Of Us'. The intro to that gives me tingles. Has done ever since '81.
DeleteCapella - was this really their final Top 40 hit? Good Lord, I'm gonna miss the pretty lead singer with the figure of the year so far if not the decade, not to mention the gorgeous outfit on her. Zowee!
ReplyDeleteMariah Carey - ok, so it's a new single by satellite and would eventually get to No.4, but managed 8 weeks at No.1 in America soon after in October and November. Good Lord!
N-Trance ft Ricardo Da Force - Staying Alive
This reminded me of Heavy D & The Boyz with Now That We Found Love, where it was a similar mix of original disco sound with soul surprise in the middle. This N-Trance number was possibly the first ever cover of Staying Alive since The Bee Gees original in 1978, neither of which managed to get over the line to the No.1 spot.
Is it possible to watch totps2 episodes now they've restarted ?
ReplyDeleteReally enjoyed them before the summer break .
I had the same thought, and yes would love to have them posted up every week on here for a good watch and review.

DeleteBrilliant, thanks for totps2 episode 👏
DeleteThree new entries this week at peak position which missed out on a TOTP slot unfortunately:
ReplyDeleteNo.21 Vanessa Williams - Colours Of The Wind
I presume this was from a movie soundtrack at the time, possibly Pocahontas, but not quite sure. This was also her final single in the UK, and peaked this week at No.21, being the only one of two singles to make the Top 40 since arriving on the scene in 1988.
No.22 Jam & Spoon featuring Plavka - Find Me (Odyssey To Anyoona)
Another one of theirs to miss a TOTP placing on the show, and this was a re-issue of the same single released a year earlier in 1994, which did much better second time round in 1995 to reach No.22.
No.54 Bomb The Bass - Sandcastles
Last throw of the dice in a techno career also going back to 1988, and this final single failing to make the Top 40 was the last attempt to salvage some glory for a group that stormed on the scene big time during the late 80s house era with a couple of big Top 5 singles.
Surprised Bomb The Bass did so badly in the singles chart at this time with even 'Bug Powder Dust' only making 24. 'Clear' is a great album and was very well received in the press making all of the end of year charts.
