His first of five solo top ten hits and it was at its peak at number 7.

Their biggest hit and their second of six top 40 hits but it got no higher.

11th of May is next.
Good Lord, Whigfield on presentation duties, and check out the outfit. Must go down as the sexiest TOTP presenter outfit so far.
ReplyDeletePaul Weller - a new entry at No.7, and around 20 years since The Jam got started chartwise, he was well stuck in getting more new material out for the charts in the mid-90s. The dancer girl on the video reminded me of the video for The Nightcrawlers with Push The Feeling On. Anyway, as this week's chart rundown video, please spare me the strobe effects, as it made the viewing quite difficult.
Weezer - the now famous video with the Happy Days set was first shown a couple of months earlier on TOTP2 in one of their feature slots, and is quite an enterprising video to say the least, now at peak position of No.12.
Also noticed outside the Top 40 this week that Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band were at peak position of No.45 with Night Moves, and I remember the video played on one of the TV channels at the time, but can't remember which show, but this followed Seger's recent re-release of the famous We've Got Tonight which did make it into the Top40, but without TOTP exposure.
Come to think of it, the Weezer video reminded me of a similar approach used 11 years earlier by the 1984 Griff Rhys Jones advert for Holsten Pils when the superimposed film footage on the advert was Marilyn Monroe in Some Like It Hot where Jones talks to Monroe:

YouTube would see the mash-up between Adina Howard and Tubeway Army someday - in 2023 and 2024. We would like to see one, the Sugababes did it with that sample and went to number one and Gary Numan was credited.
ReplyDeleteThe famous 'Happy Days'-set video 'Buddy Holly' is a great touch though and Weezer's first UK Top 40 hit as well as i'd prefer 'Beverly Hills' from ten years later though and another sample, '10538 Overture' for The Changingman with a updated guitar riff.,
Yet another great episode. What Whigfield lacked in technical presenting expertise she made up for in joyful enthusiasm.
ReplyDeleteGreat opener with the Wildhearts. I always had a soft apot for Jessie but Joshua Kadison looked better with long hair than short.
Paul Weller's renaissance hits with a decent slice of elder statesman Britpop. Adina Howard's track will have a long lasting influence and it's great to revisit ot. Runrig isn't my cup of tea but I appreciate its presence.
Something was presumably off with the sound for Björk and Skunk Anansie because they start a bit out of tune with each other but it soon improves and I love both acts so great to revisit their collaboration.
Weezer and Oasis - both fabulous, and Perez Prado - the latest fun advert track (though isn't it weird how Guinness and Levi's had such a hold over classic adverts using great music compared to every other brand out there).
Jimmy Nail the only dud in a fab show
Great show this week with some real quality tunes. Kicking off with the surprise of 95 so far for me THE WILDHEARTS. Completely bowled over by this tune. Wonderful stuff.
ReplyDeleteThe US version of ELTON JOHN next. JOSHUA KADISON only appears to of had a couple of hits at home but 4 in the UK and Germany. "Jessie" (or the Ballad of Moses the Cat as I think we should call it), was quite good actually. Don't remember this at all from the time.
PAUL WELLER is indeed "The Changingman" and this is one of his best. Great video too. Deserved Top Ten hit.
My word ADINA, that's some outfit and rather distracting. The Sugababes were never like this. Confession time, I didn't realise "Freak Like Me" was a cover but this is a classy piece of RnB so not surprised it did well in the US. Enjoyed that.
RUNRIG performing in Garlic (well done Whigfield). Something about an Apple I think. Thank goodness this was short.
Hooray the full WEEZER "Buddy Holly" video. Very well made for the time as well. Great tune as well, one of 95s best for me.
BJÖRK & SKUNK ANANSIE – This is either a stroke of musical genius or a cacophony of noise. You decide. Personally the jury is out. Intriguing though and they both throw themselves into it.
Quite liked the JIMMY NAIL tune after all the Cowboy stuff.
Noel and Liam loving every moment of OASIS triumph. Some Might Say this is where Liam developed his God complex.
Guinness anyone?
