ReplyDeletePick of the show was the Recorded For Recall 1986 with Red Box with For America. I remember this group made such a big impact at the time with their positive sound, that I thought they would be around for a long time, but the 1985 and 1986 period was all they got in terms of Top 40 action.
DeleteThis was followed by the superb No.1 by Berlin called Take My Breath Away which lodged at the No.1 spot for the whole of November 1986. Top Gun indeed!
Hi Angelo, there's no sound on this 3rd Nov 1994 Kylie Minogue edition when downloaded on WeTransfer. Could you repost it with sound please?
ReplyDeleteI'm not the uploader Dory I'm afraid - you could try the version on Youtube as an alternative - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iu4iSTS59YU&t=1161s
DeleteOk Utube to the rescue again, thanks Angelo, as still cannot get sound from Anonymous's download. Anyone else finding this?
ReplyDeleteJust love Kylie Minogue hosting this show in that gorgeous gold colour evening dress. Coorrrr!
Elton John - just couldn't resist another trip to the TOTP studio to perform his Circle Of Life single despite having been at a higher chart position for the same single the last time he performed it in the studio!
Chart rundown - not so much about the R Kelly video which was edited out anyway, but I noticed a couple of peak positions for previous 80s & 90s regulars inside the Top 30 that got cold-shouldered this time round, with no play on the show:
No.20 Paul Weller - Out Of The Sinking
No.23 Aerosmith - Crazy
Sheryl Crow - although Kylie points out that it is Crow's first time on TOTP, it is actually Crow's second single release in the UK, as her debut single earlier in the year called Leaving Las Vegas only managed No.66, so we were not introduced to her then.
Salt & Pepa - was to be their final single in a heavy six-year run of singles since coming onto the scene with their most famous song Push It in 1988. They would now disappear for two years until the end of 1996 releasing only three occasional singles for the rest of the decade, with a best position of No.22.
Pato Banton - just love the way Kylie introduces this as a cover of the original released in the year she was born in 1968. Count me in also for same year born, and cool move by Kylie at the end of the show to avoid getting bundled by the audience as every other presenter does, by cleverly positioning herself standing at the back of them!
I'm away this weekend, will anons uploads be around for a few days?
ReplyDeleteThanks Anonymous again for putting these up. I can understand the credits being not cuttable in a programme but is a single chart from 29 years ago really that essential? I'd much rather see Kylie Minogue presenting on British TV (must've been very unusual) than wonder where Rozalla's latest single is in the charts. Oh well.
ReplyDeleteMic, Kylie prsented a second TOTP in February 1995 (so about a month's time in BBC4 re-run terms) so, unless someone in that edition does something illegal between then and now, we'll see her.
DeleteBig thanks, Anonymous.
ReplyDeleteQuite a line-up in that studio, Kylie looking dandy and doing a solid hosting job.
Just to give some chart background, four of the nine songs were at their peak, those not are indicated below.
New Boys On The Block first, complete with some awful kettle screech notes by Squirt in the middle near the end.
Elton on his own this time, but I’m still not a fan of this. As stated earlier, this had already peaked at number 11!
R Kelly. Bastard. Non-mugshots: farewell to Magic Affair after three minor hits.
Peak of the week for me as Terrorvision rock it and then some. Tony had been in some scrape judging by that scar on his forehead. What was the drummer biting throughout? I’m guessing The Embassy, as advertised on that drum head, was a gig venue or nightclub in their home county of Yorkshire.
Now for four in a row which climbed higher….
Stool ballad time for Eternal’s dullest yet which made number 4.
Quite an intro for Tom Jones’ top 11 hit there. Three icons in the studio at once, I bet the audience were happy.
Sheryl Crow with what sounds in parts to me like a sped up “Chuck E’s In Love” by Rickie Lee Jones. Another which peaked at 4.
The Condiments with guitar lad out of Terrorvision on a podium. Shame it was just shouty rap with metal backing but it got to number 19.
Paxo’s video again before Madness’s top 7 hit, which I once read was re-titled “Uno Passo Avanti” (“One Step In Front”) when released in Italy as, apparently, There wasn’t a word for “beyond” in Italian.
Must say I've always had a very soft spot for Eternal's single and it's a shame it's lost to BBC4's repeats although it will be done again on the Christmas edition. I have a precious memory of seeing them perform it on Vanessa Feltz' daytime show a day or two before Christmas Eve '94. Or at least I think I do! Lots of performances of that on YouTube but can't find that one. Even the 'TV Pop Diaries' website doesn't mention it and that has virtually everything music related for every year. Weird. I don't think I imagined it.
DeleteA couple of interesting tunes peaking outside the Top 40 this week for previous chart regulars, and worth a mention:
ReplyDeleteNo.43 Robin S - Back It Up
After an impressive first half of 1993 with two Top 20 singles, the last three including this one just missed the Top 40, and there would be nothing form her again until 1997 when re-releasing her 1993 debut single Show Me Love, which got to No.9 in 1997.
No.45 Seal - Newborn Friend
First single since 1990 not to make the Top 40, which was disappointing considering his achievements up to now with so many good singles on TOTP. We would soon get the re-issue of Kiss From A Rose in 1995 that made the Top 4 thanks to a movie soundtrack in that year that helped it along, as it only got to No.20 on first release in 1994.
Late with this one. Thanks Anonymous for putting this up here. I only have my mobile to view it on so I took the YouTube option. A really good show and a big loss to the BBC4 repeats but there we go. Kylie a delightful presenter who looks a dream and with lots of smiles and enthusiastic arm waving and a sweet way of looking back over her shoulder after her links. She stays a good distance from the crowd who understandably may be a little more excited than usual.
ReplyDeleteUltimate KAOS; "For all the girls out there!" Thus spake a kid barely in double figures. It was never likely to get better from there. At least he had a go at singing live but the intro was pretty much the only bit that was in tune.
Elton John; Wearing what looks like a jacket made from a plastic raincoat Elton back in the studio and again a mellow performance of 'Circle Of Life'. Within a circle of lights. Good thinking. Or bad hearing. Rather ominous round lights which circle his piano and I wondered if the part they surrounded was going to detach and see him slowly descend. Nope but another pleasant few minutes.
Heartbroken that I can't see on BBC4 what single made 32 that week. Or 27. I'll just have to deal with it and continue with my life.
Terrorvision; For me their best single and a fine performance. I heart The Embassy. Probably a club in their home town of Bradford. What was hanging from the ceiling? Spare pairs of the bassist's trousers??
Eternal; Another loss but it will be on again for Christmas Day but not as charming and intimate as here. I liked how the girls were dressed. The two on the left in dark blue, the two on the right in red. I do love this single and in front of a red curtain it's like the gentlest late night fringe stage festival performance you could hope for. Really enjoyable.
Tom Jones; This not enjoyable.
Sheryl Crow; Though never a huge fan, this is a genuine loss to the '94 repeats. Her breakout single and I think the only time it will get shown. I read 'Vox' magazine every month in that period and there was plenty of attention given to her as a rising star so she is a huge part of this year. A single causing havoc in Kylie's lounge. Teenage boys eyes widen across the nation.
Salt N Pepa; Our sassy intro providers are just the same on the stage. I wouldn't want it any other way.
Pato Banton; Still alright.
Madness; From an edition that was cut from the repeats and it suffers the same fate again.
Lovely to see Kylie presenting and she brings real enthusiasm with her and does a good job. Not sure why they couldn't have edited out R Kelly as it seemed an easy fix to me but maybe the Top Ten mention did for this episode.
ReplyDeletePaul Weller with a Top 20 new entry and missing from the show again. I'm starting to think he may have declined rather than been snubbed as it's happened so often.
Always liked a bit of TERRORVISION as they usually have some catchy chorus and hooks but "Alice, What’s The Matter" contains neither and is a bit disappointing.
Nice slow tune from ETERNAL. "Oh Baby I…" a big new entry for them. Stools will be stolen by Westlife later in the decade. I thought all the girls looked rather fine as well.
"If I Only Knew" I'd be in a minority of One with this TOM JONES hit. Love it. Great sound and really funky.
SHERYL CROW makes her debut with the now ubiquitous "All I Wanna Do". Some songs just leave a mark and become part of the culture of the time and this is one of them. I do like the song and I thought she sung it well.
SALT-N-PEPA (with added Terrorvision) make an absolute racket on stage with a rocked up "None Of Your Business". Wasn't sure about this at the start but really got into the groove in the end. Nice to see the outside bras back again. Hope they've been washed since SNAP! used them.
Another solid episode, shame they couldn't cut R Kelly.
ReplyDeleteGood presenting job by Kylie who seems sooo young here! Losing the perm seemed to take years off her, not add them.
Don't especially like TJ or UK tracks but they earned their place chartwise.
EJ - big hitters ahoy in the studio tonight. Overplayed but a good song.
I always find it curious that Sheryl Crow sings the first verse of this with a different rhythm live to on the record. Her track, her prerogative but singing along becomes challenging!
Terrorvision my favourite of the night but enjoyed Salt n Pepa, SC, Eternal, EJ, Madness and poor Pato on video again.
