Sadly, this edition of Top of the Pops from the 15th of December 1994 is not going to be shown on BBC4 due to it featuring a clip of Gary Glitter right at the very end. So a huge thanks goes to Anonymous for making it available here at WeTransfer.

ReplyDeleteThere is no sound on your TOTP link Rob. Could you post it as a WeTransfer link please?
Deletehopefully this works https://we.tl/t-tDL8ToSzRk
DeleteTried this but it is not converting to a viewable file on the Apple Mac Quicktime platform. Could you try VLC as I have that video platform?
DeleteIt should work on VLC as that is what I use.
DeleteAccording to Mediainfo it is MPEG-4, 1525 kb/s, AVC video codec with Opus as the audio codec.
Big thanks to Anonymous for their help this week (part 1), however, after two attempts which kept bobbing up and down between 30 minutes and up to 4 hours to download, I gave up after ten minutes of getting nowhere. I’m guessing it’s some compatibility fault with my PC.
ReplyDeleteAs it turned out, this was a dud of an edition for my taste, so I’m glad I’m missing it.
I checked the only two tracks I couldn’t recall on YouTube. Michelle’s gone down the slow ballad route already, and M-Beat and Nazlyn give us an appalling jungle tinged version of Anita Baker’s classic.
Sting rehashes a hit from nine years ago, Bon Jovi are on again (!!!) and that’s about it.
Let’s try the December 22nd download. Wish me luck.
Ive tried downloading both, and they are fine.
ReplyDeleteMust be something wrong with my PC settings as mentioned. Once a week I have to disable a McAfee extension in order to be able to watch clips on YouTube again.
DeleteMove over Grid here comes REDNEX with Banjos at the ready. I blame all the alcohol consumed at 1994's Christmas and New Year parties for this getting to Number One. Cotton-Eyed meaning drunk of course, so quite appropriate really.
ReplyDeleteLoads of fun though and I don't mind this at all.
MICHELLE GAYLE with the obligatory slow third single. "I’ll Find You" is perfectly fine but a shame she wasn't brave enough to sing it live.
Had to watch the POWER RANGERS to get the charts. Very mean of TOTP. I Remember that "2 in a tent" Cleaning Windows song. Christmas has a lot to answer for.
Pointless cover of "Sweet Love" from M-BEAT. Jungle may be massive but these 2 styles do not mix and this is just noise.
CELINE still creeping towards the top and then STING with a rather funked up version of "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free" which I enjoyed.
BON JOVI with their own seasonal offering. "Please Come Home For Christmas" is on my Xmas playlist and I think it's a rather nice tune and works well. Quite a cheesy video but I wouldn't mind the same present as Jon.
This is where I finally took notice of OASIS. "Whatever" one of their finest tunes in my opinion. Nice bit of messing about at the start foreshadowing the rivalry that was to come.
EAST 17 in full Xmas mood for "Stay Another Day" A strong presenting performance from Damon.
No 34. CJ Lewis "Dollars" Back with an original composition that still sound like all his previous efforts and Number 34 was it's peak.
DeleteNo 33. Black Duck "Whiggle In line" which lifts the duck, the backing track and some of the vocals to "Saturday Night" and adds a rap. It's as bad as it sounds.
No 29. 2wo Third3 with their second and final Top 40 hit "I Want to be Alone"
No 28. 2 In A Tent. More Christmas crap this time sampling Lonnie Donnegon and his Cleaning Windows song.
Turns out (shite again) that the 2 In A Tent rubbish was produced by Stock and Aitken without Waterman.
DeleteHealth & Safety must have been at its infancy in those days to let Rednexx have a bonfire on stage indoors dancing around it, Would have been a better idea outdoors.
DeleteI also thought that M-beat ft Nazlyn was a waste of time, when you consider Anita Baker's superb original in 1986, unusually only getting to No.13.
Better luck today! I think something in my PC’s background was nixing downloads, and I seem to have fixed it. The show took just over a minute to transfer this time round.
ReplyDeleteThanks to Anonymous for this show. Also thanks to Morgie for mopping up the non-mugshots in my short absence.
I don’t like Damon Albarn, but I liked his presentation style and he needs to give Neneh Cherry / Kravitz lessons if they ever want old Grumpy Chops back.
As stated earlier, I wish we could have swapped The Grid’s banjo rave for that substandard Ace Of Base on moonshine.
Michelle goes down the Whitney ballad route. She’s there somewhere between those giant drapes. Luckily, this lower charting hit wasn’t curtains for her career. Ahem.
“Sweet Love” jungle style, the aural equivalent of pouring vinegar over smoked salmon.
Sting goes all dancey on us. Hark at you, Gordon. First we’ve had Ce Ce Peniston, now it’s YI Sumner. See what I did there?
Bon Jovi tackle the 1960 US festive hit in exactly the same mode as The Eagles when they had a Stateside success with this previously. At least there are fewer shots of bloody waterfalls in this clip.
As alluded to in “The Story….”, Damon’s intro to his big rivals took several takes due to the Manc lads joshing and being rude behind him. Nice intro in the end. Surprised they didn’t have palm trees on the stage instead of sunflowers seeing as it was Oasis. See what… never mind.
East 17, number one in Israel. Wow!
Sadly, Damon mentions the outro bastard twice in the show at unchoppable links.
Right, that’s better. Let’s have another crack at the 22nd.
I did find it a little surprising that Sting put a dance troupe as backing dancers for his 1985 original of the same song, but speeded up for the 90s no doubt as on this performance.
DeleteA few years before East 17, Mory Kante had a No.1 in Israel as well as throughout Europe with Ye Ke Ye Ke, but only managed No.29 with it in the UK which was its worst result chart wise.
Writing this while watching Elton John headlining on Glastonbury's finale.
ReplyDeleteChart rundown - Good Lord, Celine Dion already 9 weeks in the Top 40 and still only at No.8 before eventually getting to No.1 in 1995. Call it a slow burn to say the least!
Just add one more to Morgie's selected chart rundown non-invites, Bomb The Bass as a new entry at No.35 with Darkheart was their only week in the Top 40, and turned out to be their final Top 40 placing, as two more singles in 1995 failed to make the Top 40, and so we'll not see them again on the chart rundown never mind a slot on TOTP.
Shame I missed this one, Whatever is my favourite Oasis track and seeing Damon introduce it would have been fun.
