I'd like to be somebody else and know that I've been to the 30th of June 1994 edition of Top of the Pops!
I'd like to teach the world to snarl
30-6-94: Presenter: Bruno Brookes
(14) JULIET ROBERTS – Caught In The Middle
Getting the show underway with a remixed version of her number 24 hit from last year, and this time it peaked at number 14.
(18) LET LOOSE – Crazy For You
Performing what became their first of three top ten hits when it peaked at number 2.
(7) REEL 2 REAL feat. THE MAD STUNTMAN – Go On Move
In the studio but the song got no higher.
(38) THE BOOMTOWN RATS – I Don’t Like Mondays (video) (and charts)
Re-issued to promote the top ten album Loudmouth - Best of the Boomtown Rats and Bob Geldof, but it got no higher.
(11) OASIS – Shakermaker
ShakerMaking their studio debut with the second of 26 top 40 hits, the fourth of Britpop's big four finally make it to the party, and the 1990's can well and truly begin at long last! Number 11 was the peak for this one.
(40) CRYSTAL WATERS – Ghetto Day
Here in the studio but the song got no higher.
(NEW) THESE ANIMAL MEN – Speeed King
Performing a track from their number 39 album, Too Sussed.
(3) THE GRID – Swamp Thing
A second studio performance but the tune was now at its peak.
(1) WET WET WET – Love Is All Around (video)
Fifth of fifteen weeks at number one.
(NEW) CLUBHOUSE feat. CARL – Living In The Sunshine (studio montage) (and credits)
Their third and final top 40 hit and it peaked at number 21.
7th of July is next.
Reel 2 Real - costumes of the year so far have to go to this lot, as the show went out a few days before American Independence Day, it was somewhat less surprising to see them flaunt it, but the two sexy dancers with the cute hotpants were just too sexy and I have been thinking of them the following day. Good Lord, I need a cold shower.
ReplyDeleteChart rundown - was as surprised as Bruno Brookes to see The Boomtown Rats back in the 1994 chart with their 1979 No.1 summer hit and video, and of course their biggest single during their career, by now long gone of course. Chaka Demus & Pliers were unlucky not to get another invite to perform on this week's show as they were still going up to No.19, and Aerosmith as a new entry at No.24 this week were completely shut out and not to get shown at all, cos they went down the chart the following week.
The Grid - getting played at No.3 on the week that they were at peak position, this tune was brilliantly bringing out the banjo to meet with techno/dance music, and it came off really well with a great video, although we only got to see The Grid in the TOTP studio during their full run in the chart with this single.
I must say that this was a great show to close off the month of June and complete the first half of 1994, as we head into the second half of the year next week with BBC4 with some great tunes still to come before the year is out.
Solid episode if not as good as its predecessor.
ReplyDeleteGreat opener from Juliet Lewis.
I begrudgingly admit the Let Loose single is good (was in my anti boyband indie kid era back in 1994) but the lead singer isn't er classically boyband in looks. He looks old enough to be the drummer's dad.
Reel 2 Reel - good to see the Pops making up for a lot of ignoring I Like ro Move It.
Quite a lot of low reaches choices tonight with the Boomtown Rats and Crystal Waters.
And here they are. Oasis were unlucky to miss out with Supersonic but this is an assured debut from a band who are about to become icons.
These Animal Men - I like it but what a weird choice for an exclusive!
The Grid - decent studio turn but getting a bit bored of this one now.
Good grief, who are that lot introducing the show?
ReplyDeleteIt’s Trev again, dressed like an accountant on a night out as always.
Juliet Roberts with a bit of a banger and a neat logo behind her.
Trev provides a number one spoiler before Let Loose, the band Johnny Hates Jazz could have been if they’d sped up a bit.
Reel 2 Real’s early lyrics sounded like they’d been written by Flobadob Idiot out of Spin Doctors. Go on, move that FF button.
Boomtown Rats, down at number 38? Why show this? What a waste of a slot deserved by any of those high new entries. Ah, KWS are back and not shown. We dodged a bullet there!
And the nightmare fully begins. Not an indie band, just an unbearably smug bloke ripping off a Coca Cola anthem.
A right old coup over much higher new entries for anchor slot Crystal Waters, trying to sound like one of Janet Jackson’s midtempo summer-like hits and not quite succeeding.
Much preferred These Animal Men to that Manc lot. As you can guess, this is the only time we’ll ever see them on the show as they only managed one number 62 and two number 72’s singles-wise.
A bit bored seeing The Grid again but enjoyable nevertheless.
A bit bored seeing WWW again so I didn’t.
What was that montage track called again? I didn’t quite catch the title.
what’s your email address please? So I can contact you with a request? Many thanks
ReplyDeleteLike the cool water from an oasis (more of them later) it's JULIET ROBERTS first up with a nice but forgettable pop tune. Very radio friendly.
ReplyDeleteLET LOOSE were the toast of the teeny mags for a while and it's nice to have a boy-band playing all the instruments as well. I do rather like "Crazy For You", it's a good tune. Not sure why Pat Sharp is on guitar at the back though.
"Do you have a flag?" Yes REEL 2 REAL have plenty. I think we call this "one for the Dad's". I was certainly entertained for 3 minutes. The song? Well they haven't even bothered changing the title that much so let's just call it Move It 2.
Lovely to see THE BOOMTOWN RATS with "I Don’t Like Mondays" Not very 1994 though is it.
Welcome to OASIS. Not a huge fan of their earlier "not-indie" stuff but this is a strong performance of "Shakermaker" and the song has gone up in my estimation. Best yet to come from them of course but we are almost at full Brit-Pop now!
CRYSTAL WATERS at Number 40 hey? A lot of acts not available this week then. Which is a blessing as this is a rather fine tune. Didn't recall this at all but show highlight for me. Very nice.
We really are scrapping the barrel tonight aren't we - the number 39 album! Good grief. THESE ANIMAL MEN with a very generic indie number. Biggest hit made Number 62. This tanked at Number 95!
THE GRID back for more of the same and then The Wets give us a live Wembley version of LIAR. At least some variety is popping up (which is more than we had with Bryan Adams stint at the top).
OK show.
