You're number one girl and every time I think of you I think of the 10th of August 1994 edition of Top of the Pops!
Snog of the pops

(24) CARLEEN ANDERSON – True Spirit

Eleventh of fifteen weeks.
18th of August is next.
Another sexy show this week, opening with a second incarnation of Chaka Demus and Pliers, the one and only Red Dragon with Brian & Tony Gold, making sure the future of Caribbean pop music is secure. Impressive teenage minidress dancers with their paired up men, and also noticed the cameraman trying to focus upskirt on one of the dancers. Isn't there a Red Dragon pub somewhere?
ReplyDeleteShampoo - still going up for these two girls, and looking sexy again like last time with their miniskirts, and the song wasn't bad either.
Top 10 rundown - All-4-One now at their 7th week at No.2 behind the Wets, which could be the longest a record has got stuck at No.2 going back to June when they first took anchor at No.2. The longest one I can remember up this point was Father Abraham & The Smurfs stuck at No.2 for 6 weeks in the summer of 1978 behind Travolta & ONJ at No.1 with their first Grease single.
Way before our time and before TOTP, but Frank Chacksfield and his Orchestra peaked at number 2 over four separate periods in 1953 with "Terry's Theme From 'Limelight' ".
DeleteI meant to say that Frank Chacksfield spent eight weeks at number 2 over four separate periods without reaching the summit.

DeleteAnd again... It turns out that, as happened all the time in the 50's and 60's, someone else covered the same tune in the hope of having a hit. Frank was stopped from having a chart topper by the Ron Goodwin Orchestra reaching number 3 with the same theme at the same time. Frank's eight weeks at number 2 is apparently a UK chart record. The record for chart versions of the same track, both vocal and instrumental, is probably five different top 50 versions of "Never on A Sunday" in October 1960.
DeleteGood Lord, so All-4-One in 1994 then takes the record for longest reign at No.2 without getting to No.1, at least in the colour era from the late 1960's to present day, or at least until 1994. On the upside, they were at No.1 for a staggering 11 weeks in America with this single at the same time as their long reign at No.2 with it in the UK.
DeleteAnyone got a decent copy of the 25th August edition? Thanks to TV Cream for alerting us, that week's edition with Malcolm McLaren as host and featuring Dinosaur Jr and the reboot of Kylie won't be shown next week due to the BBC cocking up storage of that show.
ReplyDeleteNoooooo! Confide in Me is brilliant!
DeletePopscene has the raw studio recording tape, and two off-air copies. And then Me & someone else on DigitalSpy have done our own recreations using the raw tape.
DeletePlease, Rob, do your best. We'd be eternally grateful.

DeleteFour songs peaking outside the Top 40 this week for previous chart regulars, with no TOTP for them on these singles releases:
ReplyDeleteNo.42 Dr Alban - Away From Home
Already had his last Top 40 single in 1993, and this new one was his penultimate single before finally bowing out in early 1995.
No.60 Amy Grant - Lucky One
First single for two years, and third single in a row to peak at No.60, having not been able to break the Top 40 for three years since Every Heartbeat reached No.25 in the summer of 1991.
No.67 808 State - Bombadin
Third single in a row to fail to make the Top 40, with their last one in 1992 with One In Ten. There would be nothing from them after this until 1996, and then had to wait until 1997 for their next Top 40 single, so we won't be seeing them on the TOTP chart rundown until then.
No.72 Hammer - Don't Stop
Two years since his last Top 40 single, the one formerly known as MC Hammer was still hammering away with some new stuff in 1994 to no avail with this his penultimate single before finally calling it a day in 1995 with a third single in a row failing to make Top 40.
Really enjoy Red Dragon. BNH were also at that year's Radio 1 Roadshow and this is a great cover even if it got overplayed at the time.
ReplyDeleteFSOL not my thing but that's OK.
Shampoo back and still fun.
DJ Miko because every single song in the mid 90d needs a dance remix/cover. Many many more of this kind of thing to come. At least it's better than Abigail's Teen Spirit.
Joe C - alright I guess.
Carleen A - talented but her songs never did much for me.
LL - again. But they at least moved up to slightly shuffle the top 4.
Red Dragon - reggae was obviously the bit thing in 1994. This is that weird mix of reggae and rap that really bores me…
ReplyDeleteBrand New Heavies - not a patch on the original, but pleasant enough. I notice recently that lots of the ladies seem to be wearing outfits that look like white nighties - a fashion that passed me by.
Future sound of london - most interesting thing about this was the vocals were by Elizabeth Fraser.
Shampoo - none sequitur comment - they were the subject of a Pop Master question last week.
DJ Miko - yet another cover, but I actually quite liked this one, probably because they didn’t do much with it other than add a disco beat.
Joe Cocker - it’s no ‘with a little help…’
Carleen Anderson - dreadful!
Let Loose - file under sub Take That…
... but file Let Loose at least two divisions above Sad Boys Inc!
DeleteBlimey! An 8:00 start? Si offering a different timezone intro to Meat Loaf’s recent effort.
ReplyDeleteA bit of Lambada at the back for our first enjoyable tune. Pipe that and smoke it, Shabba!
Brand New Heavies suck the lifeblood out pf the Maria Muldaur classic. Here’s how you should hear it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VlrKETxwRvM
Cocteau Twins ambience with a weird video next. Non-mugshots: hi and bye to Direckt.
Excellent shampoo quip before Shampoo’s vacuous yet catchy bit of froth.
Just what we need. A pelt-shearing version of 4 Non-Blondes’ hit. What’s going on? FF, that’s what.
Ay up, a scary old rocker next with an acceptable piece of pop. Simple yet effective.
Carleen gives us some worthy but ‘in one ear’ righteous RnB. True spirit? I’ll have plum brandy, please.
Let Loose’s plugger needs a pay rise and then some. I’ll miss this.
No intro for WW from Si. Well done, sir.
Seems that since the Radio 1 DJs were back hosting the show, that some videos were allowed in, aside from the strictly chart rundown slot and No.1 slot or superstar video exclusive from the Franklin and Dortie era of 92-93. The Joe Cocker video this week is my case in point, as a year ago the video would not have been played unless he appeared in the TOTP studio or was at No.1 with it.
DeleteAs mentioned by TV Cream, Ric Blaxill was on holiday for a fortnight. it appears his deputy wasn't the type for exclusives, album tracks or a daft outro montage. Well done, fella.
ReplyDelete25-08-94 recreation from the studio tape. https://we.tl/t-6bjNh5viRe
ReplyDeleteRED DRAGON flying high and a better performance this time I felt. Followed by a cracking summer tune from the BRAND NEW HEAVIES. "Midnight At The Oasis" still sounding great today.
ReplyDeleteFUTURE SOUND OF LONDON with a Computer generated video for an odd tune that I didn't mind at all.
A couple of miming moments now. The best thing about SHAMPOO was the Head and Shoulders gag and then the "What's Up" woman not even miming the words correctly. Interestingly this dance version works really well and I kinda like it.
The wonderfully soulful JOE COCKER next. "Simple Things" is a very nicely written tune, sung and performed beautifully. Easy when you know how. Best in show tonight by a mile. He also sings my favourite version of "Summer In The City".
The CARLEEN ANDERSON tune I've forgotten already then LET LOOSE for the fourth time! Clearly this is their 15 minutes of fame. Still a great song as well.
Don't think I've ever seen the WETs video without all the Four Wedding clips inserted.
Good show
