2-Unlimited seemed to be a favourite with the TOTP producers it seems, having them in the studio whenever they could and at the earliest opportunity. Having said that, I think the next show is where TOTP breaks tradition for the first time in having the same song two weeks in a row as main slot when not having reached No.1 yet, meaning Michael Jackson new video shown this week and next week!
ReplyDeleteGood to see the KLF video clip on one of the Brit Award nominations, as we only saw them in the studio when it was in the charts. and oh Cathy Dennis, I could see her in the studio or on video, she looks so good always!
To finish on the new Michael Jackson exclusive video - apart from the fact that he will become the first artist that gets two weeks in row as main slot on TOTP, the show now breaking tradition for the first time, I was pleasantly surprised that they showed the full 9-minute video, but having seen his last video in full on the show, and then the full 6-minute video of Bohemian Rhapsody, the new revamp of TOTP meant that the show had dropped the obsession with cramming as many hits onto the show as possible, and looked for quality over quantity on the show since the October 1991 revamp.
Can't remember what the earliest one is but ABBA was on 1/4 and 8/4/76 before making it to number 1.
ReplyDeletePrimal Scream go all gospel, and Bobby dances like a Thunderbirds puppet. As quasi-inspirational ditties go, not their worst single but not their best either, they were too tied to their influences too much of the time.
ReplyDelete2 Unlimited, doing well but we've seen it before, then a bunch of clips and a big list of the Brit nominees. Don't see the KLF's dead sheep in there, must have been a late addition.
Curtis Stigers back again, then Shakespears Sister again (not much new on this show, is there?), followed by the Smooth Criminal himself, with a typically more money than sense self-indulgent video. Half expected Eddie Murphy to start singing too, he did try that for a while, didn't he?
Then the Wets to end again, with an Italian lady presenter who gives Mark the shortest of shrift.
I’m just reading Bobby Gillespie’s new autobiography where he describes Movin’ On Up as “a universal song of courage in the face of adversity” I’d always assumed it was just about drugs! I’m not a massive fan but caught them live when they were twee indie kids, then rock indie kids, then dance indie kids, then rock(s) stars, then techno knob twiddlers, although that’s 20 years ago now since I last saw them. Jeez.
DeleteTwo tunes at peak position further down the charts this week, with no TOTP for them this time round:
ReplyDeleteNo.41 Altern-8 - Frequency
After we were all raving about their No.3 achievement with Active-8 (Come With Me), they follow it up with this new single called Frequency, and fail to break Top 40, otherwise I'm sure we would have seen them back on TOTP, after having two separate appearances in the studio for their last single.
No.44 Zucchero ft Randy Crawford - Diamante
Wow, after Zucchero graced us first with Senza Una Donna in early 1991, he follows up about a year later with a new singing partner in Randy Crawford. Second of three singles released by Zucchero, and his last one was soon to come in late 1992 reaching No.15 with Miserere.
Such a mixed bag of an episode this one.
ReplyDeleteStarts well with a great performance from Primal Scream. Then 2 Unlimited - we've seen it before, but it's doing well, so fine. Then a boring suoer long Brits plug. Then a decent live from Curtis S and a cracking performance from SS before NUNE RUDDY MINUTES OF JACKO YET AGAIN STOP IT ALREADY. And the boring nunber one, though at least there's a nice new live version, Bryan Adams takr note. Aldo hilarious how small Mark is compared to Adrian. Bit like a budget version of the Fleetwood/Fox Brits double act.
I think Adrian was standing on the stage and Mark was on the floor! Well, I hope so...
DeleteOnce again, thanks to Anonymous, and may I compliment the regularly brilliant and sharp picture quality of your contraband offerings, but another duffer of a show which Adrian Ponce appears to have specialised in, this time containing just one chart song we haven’t had before, and it’s first up.
ReplyDeleteStrange muffled reverbed vocals for Primal Scream’s attempt to sound like the Stones / Stoned / both.
Rundown: It’s “The Bouncer” by Kicks Like A Mule, you dickhead!
“Twilight Zone”? More like Kinky Star Trek for Anita’a outfit. Woo yeah whatever. At least the crowd enjoyed that.
Great. A show meant to be about the current hits, and already watered down by new releases, hits in the US chart and album tracks, gets hijacked this week for a totally pointless borefest with old hits for acts nominated for the Brits. Whose stupid idea was this?
Ah, the audience applauded Curtis at the start and swayed gently throughout. Deserved. Well done again, lad.
Goth ‘Nana sits out Marcella’s early onslaught, stands up to reveal what could be a cloud or lamb tacked onto her hemline, then gives us an even worse corned beef hash of her vocals than last time which I didn’t think possible. Stand back everyone, here comes the shrieky bit – too late!
Christ, yet another third of the chart show wasted for a Wacko preview. If this is Europe’s best pop show as Mark states, I’d hate to see the worst one.
That Bernadette’s a bit of a feisty cracker. I’d rather have heard her sing “Goodnight Girl”.
My favourite Twilight tune was not 2-unlimited's Twilight Zone, but rather 'Twilight' by ELO some 10 years earlier in late 1981 from the Time album. I still have the 7-inch single of it with the cover-sleeve promo some 40 years later!
DeleteDon't know about that one, Dory, I'd say the best Twilight tune is Manhattan Transfer's Twilight Zone from 1979. A solid block of space disco.
Deletehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHX6RGRKgF0
Thanks Dory and THX, I hadn’t expected to be listening to Manhattan Transfer and ELO this morning :-)
DeleteThe best sample of Twilight Zone has to be in Pop Will Eat Itself’s Def Con One though.
What about Susan Fassbender's excellent 'Twilight Cafe'? The ELO track is a cracker too...
DeleteOh yes, forgot about Susan's one, good shout Stephen.
DeleteHi does anyone have a way to see this episode? The download expired. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteYou can ignore this - I found a 'Mega' way to watch it..
DeleteTime to dip a toe into February with a BRITS obsessed edition of the show and several acts we've seen before.
ReplyDeleteThanks once again to Anonymous for the floppy fringed contraband.
Class this Primal Scream tune.. they just ooze cool don't they. Even today it sounds so fresh.
Got my swagger on…
I'm assuming this was the only new entry in the Top 40 this week as we won't be getting any more..
Woah! Its 2 unlimited. TOTP faves already.
Fun as usual.
Nice little dip into the Brits 1992. Live on BBC One in those days..but who won?
Male - Seal
Female - Lisa Stansfield
Group - The KLF / Simply Red joint winners
Newcomer - Beverly Craven
Album - Seal
Producer - Trevor Horn
International solo - Prince
International group - REM
International newcomer - PM Dawn
Soundtrack - The Commitments
Video - Seal, Killer
Single - Queen - These Are The Days Of Our Lives.
Time for some more returnees. First up Curtis still wondering why he had a massive radio tune this year but never quite made it as a big star. Then Bill's little sis begging us to Stay. And a very grateful return it is too. Astonishingly good record.
Now the big exclusive MJ video.. A lot of unnecessary faffing around at the start of this video before we get to the goods. And it's worth the wait as RTT is my favourite track from the Dangerous album.
Hello Bernadette. Hello Marti. Goodnight Girl.
It is Milan but it could be anywhere really. Nice performance none the less.
Bryan Adams AND Color Me Badd next week. Can't wait! πππ
