This edition of Top of the Pops from February 27th 1992 will not be shown on BBC4 because of Adrian Rose. So a big thanks to Anonymous for making it available here at WeTransfer.
You can also stream it from MEGA here.

5th of March is next
Not as good as the previous episode, but good to see Claudia Simon again, and this time with her school skirt on, and oh yes, first partnering up with Adrian Rose, as I don't think they presented together before.
ReplyDeleteThe Breakers - liked the Tears For Fears new single. At first I thought they were still releasing singles from their 1989 album Sowing The Seeds, as Tears Roll Down is on it, but no, they had just released a Greatest Hits 82-92 album at this point in 1992, and this one was the first taken off it. Hah, that caught us out for a minute!
New Atlantic - boy that lead singer's voice was irritating, and in a way I couldn't wait for the song to finish, but I did like the sexy girl side dancer in the white body suit, as she was doing some nice dancing in that cool body outfit. Hellooooo!
U2 - nine years since their debut in 1983, and still no TOTP studio appearance, so what do we get now? A live-by-satellite performance specially for TOTP from an empty stadium of some sort, and considering it was lunchtime in Florida when people were still getting up for a new day, when U2 would have had no-one watching them at that time of day in Florida, we got 'treated' here in the UK with a live performance when 7 or 8 million viewers were watching. Oh please!
Bono said this week that U2's name and songs make him cringe. Join the club!
Delete'Tears Roll Down' was in fact a non album B Side put on the flip of 'Sowing the Seeds of Love'. It was jazzed up a little for this release however.
DeleteThis is the original.

p.s. anyone else finding that volume on Youtube is much reduced these days? Or is it my PC?
Enjoyed this episode more than the previous one. They seem to vary wildly in quality at the moment.
ReplyDeleteClaudia effortlessly upstaging Adrian with a cocked hip at a jaunty angle, it's all he deserves.
Inspiral Carpets, as befitting a band that did a lot of touring, sound strong live here for an aggressive slice of indiepop, with a catchy keyboard riff. Good start.
Alison Limerick and her smooth soul sounds, her voice is quite deep but this song makes the most of it, either that or she makes the most of the song. Wasn't my favourite at the time, but the years have been kind, not bad at all.
Madness on a scratchy video for their Labi Siffre cover, good choice of re-release because it's one of their best tracks, even if they didn't write it themselves. We get the whole video, too. Still laugh at the "Bless the bees and the birds" image!
Everything But the Girl with a stripped cover back of the old 60s hit Love is Strange, and this is really nice, very relaxing to hear. Although their biggest hit this decade was a dance remix, they could do the acoustic stuff just as well.
Breakers, good grief, Gary Moore was still having hits in 1992?! Sounds like it should be over the end credits to a Bruce Willis movie. Animated video for Tears for Fears presumably because they'd fallen out.
New Atlantic, groo, sing the sample time again, and sing it badly! What a shower. I kind of remember this, but it didn't leave a lasting impression. Better on record.
U2 via satellite, one of their subdued numbers, a bit sorry for itself, but never mind that, what about the woman painting a huge skateboard in the background? What was that about?
On Points of View the week of this Shakespears Sister video's broadcast, someone wrote into complain that he had seen "a woman washing a corpse on TOTP!" Must we fling this filth at our pop kids?
A lot of decent outfits with less memorable singles tonight (looking at you Inspirals, Alison Limerick, EBTG and New Atlantic). A pre release from U2. We're going to hear enough of that in the years to come, wd didn't need a preview. Of the breakers, Crowded House is the one that really breaks through (hoho). And everything else was ho-hum.
ReplyDeleteFour songs peaking INSIDE the Top 40 this week with no TOTP breakers or main slot before going down the chart:
ReplyDeleteNo.29 PM Dawn - Reality Used To Be A Friend Of Mine
Mixed fortunes for this group only getting one TOTP outing in four singles released up to now, when they got to No.3 with Set Adrift On Memory Bliss, and even a chart high of No.29 for this new single in 1992 was not enough for an invite to the TOTP studio.
No.31 Army Of Lovers - Crucified
One of the best videos of the year and of the 1990s, and even a chart position of No.31 was not high enough for a play on TOTP, so what a shame we will not get to see this one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=di18hTFTwIw
No.36 River City People - Standing In The Need Of Love
Last ever single from them, and always liked the gorgeous lead singer, but they now close out their account in the charts in a career going back to 1989.
No.39 Seal - Violet
Last single in this first phase of his career in the 1990-1992 period, and this one bombing out before any chance of getting to TOTP. He would be back two years later in 1994 with somewhat better chart fortunes including the Top 5 hit Kiss From A Rose in the summer of 1995, but it's quite a while off from these TOTP reruns on BBC4.
A TOTP for Army Of Lovers could have sent them skybound. They had the image and a catchy track.
DeleteYeah, and those boobs. If they had got on to TOTP, it would be the first of this proportion since Sabrina graced the TOTP studios in 1988.
DeleteSuch a shame Army of Lovers not got a TOTP slot. Such an amazing tune
DeleteBig thanks again to Anonymous.
ReplyDeleteDecibel Girl and Adrian Ponce this time.
Ah, now, what a track to start with. Such a shame Inspiral Carpets didn’t mnake BBC4 with this. Great bass by Bungle and Clint at his finest. On the same label as Depeche Mode, folks.
Alison Limerick picking up Brand New Heavies’ baton from last time with swimming pool deep vocals.
Madness undertake a cover version (see what I did there?). Bored of this, but nice touch to give the song’s writer Labi Siffre a cameo appearance.
Nice mellow outing by EBTG. Had Tracey Thorn raided Rozalla’s wardrobe from last week? I recommend Tracey’s mini-album “A Distant Shore”.
Not seduced by DJ Seduction.
Oo, Gary Moore gives us a bit of blues on the show.
Crowded House with an antipodean Madness video vibe.
TFF with a very serious, very arty track and video.
Can we have the old Atlantic back? Faux panpipe rave with such great lyrics and beautifully sung. Actually, Body Stocking Woman over there...
Bono sings “Is it getting better?”. It was as soon as I put the volume down.
Ponce helps the show hit a new low by asking us to welcome a video. No apostrophe in the intro tag either. Siobhan channeling her inner Lene Lovich. That outer view reminded me of the classic Smash robots advert.
The New Atlantic performance has been given its own YouTube upload this week. Someone has proudly commented that it is their dad dancing on the right. No one has claimed to be the progeny of, and in contact with, said dancer on the left yet Arthur.
DeleteMaybe the lady dancer was the commenter's mum? That would be a nice romantic story, wouldn't it?
DeleteThe ITV Chart show following this TOTP episode had an interesting Top 10 video rundown, with the overpredictions of the week being Rozalla at No.9, and Opus III at No.4, as they only got to No.14 and No.5 respectively, but at least we got to see the videos, with Rozalla in a red leather catsuit in hers, and Opus III in a budget video and looking good in it:

Most surprising of all is that The Chart Show declared a new No.1 with Shanice knocking off Shakespeare's Sister after only two weeks at No.1, so the show seemed un-enamoured by Shakespeare's Sister at No.1, but in the end they enjoyed 8 weeks at no.1 in total, so no top spot for Shanice on the official chart!
ReplyDeleteNo starting every line with the letters VALENTINE
No mention of cooking a Valentine's meal.
Not even a rose!
Just a normal review to end February 1992.
Hooray, the Carpets are back. Great tune from them. Love the kind of 60s feel to this tune.
A mention of Shakespeare as well.. more from him later I reckon. Great start to the show.
Another great tune follows from Alison "Blackadder III" Limerick. Definitely a fan of this one. Lovely deep vocal as well.
This Madness tune is going rather well for a re-release. Wonder what I said about it last time. I still like it. At the start of this video we are told not to try the stunts as home which I never realised until this week.
EBTG. Back from their last cover version in 1988 with an EP of 4 cover versions. I was never a fan I'm afraid. Certainly competent but not good enough to stand out..a bit of The Beautiful South in the sound but nowhere near as much fun.
Breakers:
DJ Seduction: Bored with this sound now
Gary Moore: Not for me thanks
Crowded House: the most overplayed song ever!
Tears For Fears: Nice.. Like this a lot.
New Atlantic another dance band and this time we have pan pipe samples and a bloody awful singer trying to copy the vocal sample..oh dear. The record is probably not that bad.. I'm guessing the double Spock impersonators at the back are responsible for this.
Exclusive time: U2 live from Florida. Now this is a decent tune. Covered by everyone and their dog since, it always sounds odd to hear the original. Huge improvement on the last hit. What's with the cars?
The video to Stay. Iconic. And French and Saunders ruined it πππ
The gets a longer slot than the live version last week.
