  1. One interesting point to mention about this Xmas 1989 show is that the studio performance by Marc Almond & Gene Pitney was closed off about two thirds of the way through, cos I guess they were keeping the tunes to three minutes maximum, and this one was nearer to five minutes in full!

We usually only see videos chopped on TOTP, and this was a rare occasion where a TOTP studio performance was too.

  2. Britain's Biggest 70s hits continues with 1978 last night. I haven't watched it yet but I continue to note the absence of Christmas hits in these charts. We've missed:

    1973 - Merry Christmas Everybody - Slade
    1974 - Lonely this Christmas - Mud
1976 - When a Child is Born (Soleado) - Johnny Mathis

I think Wings just made it for 1977 (haven't watched that one either) .... but I won't miss the 1978 Christmas No1 if it isn't there!

The series has been a joy however. Absolutely loved it, I've just been a bit time pressured to keep up!

    1. Wings also made it into the 1978 Top 30 at No.22 you'll be pleased to know.

  3. Having watched the Top 30 of 1978 on Channel 5 last night, I picked out these in particular that are worth a mention:

    No.29 Frankie Valli - Grease
Never seen this TV show footage with Valli himself, as in those days where no uTube existed, we only got a Legs & Co routine on TOTP, but this American TV studio footage with Valli himself needs a good watch, as the BBC & ITV at the time only showed official videos or routines by dance groups if there was no flying in from America by the performer.

    No.28 - David Essex - Oh What A Circus
This video was shown in full on the Kenny Everett Video Show in the 1978 first series, the video being kept on in the DVD release of the series, but removed from the That's TV Gold repeats in recent weeks.

    No.11 10cc - Dreadlock Holiday
I think the first time the video was shown on British TV was in August 1978, a couple of months before it went to No.1, and shown on The Kenny Everett Video Show in full in that first series in 1978. interesting to note that the cartoon beach intro which we see nowadays on the video channels was not in the video at the time, and must have been added years later, as the Kenny Everett series on the 2018 DVD release kept the full video in the Aug 1978 show, and no cartoon beach intro in sight, but also that the whole video removed from the That's TV Gold repeats in recent weeks - cartoon beach intro or not.

No.8 The Boomtown Rats - Rat Trap
The famous line in the song about digging down in her pocket and find 50p.......well that 50p in 1978 is worth about £5 in todays money, which is now the minimum pocket money needed by kids or teenagers for a day's essential shopping at the local corner shop.

No.7 The Bee Gees - Night Fever
This video with the Bee Gees themselves in it was not the video shown on TOTP at the time, cos they showed the movie footage with Travolta, and also a Legs & Co routine, and again I think this video with the Bee Gees themselves in it was made some years later in the 80s when MTV came along and videos were more in need.

No. 5 Father Abraham & The Smurfs
The summer of 1978 is when I first took interest in the pop charts, mainly cos of the Grease videos, and being totally captured by the whole movie phenomenon as a 10-year old growing up, and having a first crush on ONJ. So of course I would see Father Abraham stuck at no.2 for six weeks behind the signature Grease No.1 for 9 weeks. Also, I didn't know that the Smurfs was a Belgian creation, and I loved collecting the various surfs toys with any pocket money that my parents gave me at the time.

    3. Re 1992, oh yes, what a second half of the summer with 11 weeks at the No.1 spot, first with Snap taking 6 weeks, and then replaced by The Shamen for a further 5 weeks with Ebenezer Goode, I remember it was like one big dance party and a dance music fan's dream lasting three months between August to October.

When you consider the same period of the previous year in 1991, it was a very different sound at No.1 with Bryan Adams for all that time. How contrasting two consecutive years can be. Seatbelts at the ready then for the 1992 ride starting on 7th January!

    4. And I think 1992 will start with four blogs in one day!
