Some fabulous records in that list. Grrrr! The Tears For Fears one is a stunner and blew me away once again when I heard it for the first time in years on a Pick of the Pops a few years ago. And don't get me started on BBC4 having to miss 'Crucify' by Tori Amos in the studio. Would've been fantastic to see them in their proper context in the original show on TV. Still at least we get the chance to see most of them through this site.
DeleteWasn't that TFF track a B Side? Sowing the Seeds of Love I believe....
DeleteSct353, it was a new recording with lyrics, and promoted their first Greatest Hits album.
DeleteSome RIPs:
ReplyDeleteSteve Bronski, who with Bronski Beat raised the profile of gay rights at a time when it was really needed, by using catchy tunes.
Robbie Shakespeare, one of the greatest bassists of all time, he's all over 80s music along with partner Sly Dunbar. Boops (Here to Go) is one of my favourite 80s singles.
Mike Nesmith of The Monkees, he was the one responsible for turning them into a real band, not only a TV show. Great solo career too, and used his mother's fortune to produce loads of videos and the cult classic movie Repo Man. Amazing career, and he was just touring with Micky Dolenz last month.
Heard on the news about the Bronski Beat founder, but not the other two RIPs.
DeleteMike Nesmith was a legend, and also the quiet calm one on The Monkees TV series. He famously had a solo hit in the 70s called Rio, which to many people was the first music video:

The best performance on this Christmas Day 1988 edition was the one edited out by BBC4 for obvious reasons, despite it being a total new and surprise performance with Gary Glitter joining The Timelords on stage for the Xmas edition.
ReplyDeleteThe rest of the performances were nothing new compared to when they were in their chart run during the 1988 year, so nothing of interest here.
Just to mention the Channel 5 Top 30 of 1977 shown last night, and my pick of the bunch were these:
ReplyDeleteNo.16 Abba - The Name Of The Game
Wow, always loved this one, and my standout Abba tune of their entire career, just ahead of One of Us in 1981. The Name Of The Game was when Abba were at their very best - a group of friends in their 30s at the best time of their lives, and talking about love in a way that would resonate with just about any age group. Pop chart masterclass.
No.15 Boney M - Ma Baker
Never heard this one till after their careers were over, and surprised to see there was a video for it, cos Boney M never did videos as such, but rather glitzy TV show appearances that were used in place of videos, but the tune is really catchy and dance stylee in many ways.
No.14 - Emerson, Lake & Palmer
I liked the story about the video being filmed at an empty Olympic stadium in Canada in a freezing cold winter, and familiar face of Greg Lake who had his own solo hit a couple of years earlier in 1975 with I Believe In Father Christmas with another iconic video, and sadly passed away 5 years ago to the week at only 69. Shocked to read on Wiki today that Keith Emmerson died by suicide by gunshot in 2016. Carl Palmer is the only surviving member of the group, and still active, more recently touring with Asia.
No.12 - Baccara - Yes Sir I Can Boogie
One of those songs that somehow surprisingly made it to No.1 in 1977, and sadly one of the two famous Spanish girls of this duo, Maria Mendiola, passed away a few months ago in Madrid.
No.11 Manhattan Transfer - Chanson D'Amour
This 'video' as such shown on the Channel 5 Top 30 of 1977, was a first for me and never knew of this footage, which looks like an American TV show performance. I certainly don't remember it being shown in Britain, as all we had in terms of performances on British TV at the time was on The Old Grey Whistle Test, and the famous Legs & Co routine on TOTP.
No.10 - Brotherhood Of Man - Angelo
How jolly, can we play it for our own Angelo on here who sets up this blog every week? Certainly this Brotherhood Of Man performance on Top Pop was a good one, and nice to see other footage apart from their TOTP performances of it, which I'm not sure if on the wiped TOTP shows or not.
Some great tunes in '77 ~ especially Angelo of course :-)
DeleteRunning away together running away in leather Ann and Joe!!!
DeleteThat ELP track video is interesting. If you go on YT you will find the complete version from 'Works' rather than this single edit.
Belatedly watched this. No, I have never seen that video for 'Chanson D'Amour' before. It wasn't shown on ToTP. Instead we got this with a much more sensible dress for Janis!

Forgot about this footage Sct, as I only remember TOTP showing the Legs & Co routine, but come to think of it, your provided footage was on also on TOTP in its 1976 chart run, so good shout there.
DeleteSomething struck me as odd about that 1977 top30. Where was Rod's big double A Side No1 'I don't want to talk about it' / 'First Cut is the Deepest'? Surely this sold more than 'You're in my Heart' which only reached No3 and a number of others I could mention.
