  1. Ini Kamoze - superb soundtrack video having so much fun there. Must watch the Pret a Porter movie this week, as never seen it before, but if it as much fun as the Kamoze video, it will be a great watch.

The Human League - now then, apart from the nearly seamless edit between Sleeper and The Human League, snipping out the R Kelly clip, this new Human league studio performance, again in a pantomime-end style line, Joanne Catherall was looking pretty hot in her black minidress, and although admittedly I usually look more at Susan Sully on the Human League videos and TOTP studio performances, the two girls now in their 30s in 1995, were two hotties this week in those two minidresses. Good Lord, was this really their biggest hit since 1982 as Bruno Brookes pointed out at the end?

Rednexx - second week at No.1, and still not comfortable with that mini fire burning on the studio stage - where's Health & Safety when you need them? Prefer the video, as there's a different girl in it that is more watchable.

  2. Top of the Pops 95 I have missed you!!!!

Hope you are all good too, so good to be back in my Saturday Pops catch up ritual (though episode 2 will have to wait a few hours).

    Ultimate Kaos - lol nope.

Massive Attack - always loved this one.

Ini K - fun song and video. Can't remember if I've seen Pret a Porter though.

Welcome Sleeper! One of my favourite Britpop bands and this track is an all time gem. It had a great video, too.

How nice to get episodes where that creep can just be simply cut without losing the whole thing.

Human League - Love this track.

Barry W - nice to see him but he doesn't seem well here, was he already ill?

Celine - i hated this then but I appreciate it a lot more now. Good performance.

Rednex - very silly but good fun.

Great little comeback episode that one.

  3. Two singles inside the Top 40 this week at peak position, with no TOTP at all for them:

No.27 Van Halen - Don't Tell Me (What Love Can Do)
Penultimate single for the American group going way back to 1980 when their first single Runnin' With The Devil only managed No.52 in the UK, but I remember their real debut came in 1984 with Jump which got to No.7. Only one further single was to come in April 1995 making only No.33 before calling it a day.

No.38 Thelma Houston - Don't Leave Me This Way
She had the original in 1977 which got to No.13 in the UK, but this 1995 release was a re-recording of the famous track which had more success in 1986 for The Communards, and presumably to hasten her own original 1977 single in tempo for 1995 standards, but did any one really care? Anyway this was to be her fourth and last single release single coming on to the scene in 1977.

  5. Where's the upcoming TOTP2 1995 episode links from 21/01/95 and 28/01/95 via Wetransfer this week...

Both of them went ahead on time on BBC Two, but they'd showed the preview of a clip during the end credits of a regular TOTP episode as they continued that trend into 1995...

    4. TOTP2 from this week in January 1995 (thanks Anonymous) had the new single Reach Up by The Perfecto Allstarz in the Video Stir section, and 13 years after the original by Pigbag with Papa's Got A Brand New Pigbag which never had a video made for it in 1982, so the Perfecto Allstarz brought back the long forgotten Pigbag tune brilliantly here in 1995, which also went on to be the walk-on tune for Adrian Lewis in world darts in the 2010's.

    5. Sorry Dory, the long break actually made me forget about the blog. I'll start posting them again this week.

    6. Thanks Rob, looks like you will have three TOTP2 shows to put up this week (thanks in advance), as we will have the first three weeks of Feb 1995 of TOTP to review cos BBC4 is skipping the TOTP of 9th Feb for some unknown reason.

  6. It’s back…

Ultimate kaos - with a plop. Next.

Massive Attack - nice singing, but a bit ploddy

Ini kamoze - I remember this, but don’t remember the film.

Sleeper - highlight of the show so far…

Human League - .. love this as well. Didn’t realise it was so late in their discography. Could have worked on the stage show a bit…

Barry White - other half liked this, but didn’t do much for me. Looked quite thin - Apparently he collapsed on stage shortly after this, and it was the start of his long struggle with illnessese

Celine Dion - not a fan of her, but this is ine of her best

Rednex - fun end to the show proper

So a middling episode, “O’ll give it 5”…

  7. Back with '95 and a pretty poor edition with one classic appearance. I wish TOTP wouldn't do that. Bruno good and reliable.

Ultimate KAOS; On for a few minutes.

Massive Attack feat Tracey Thorn; Bruno proceeds this by telling us to stand by for a legend. Well for me that would be applied to this group, at the height of their powers with the majestic 'Protection'. A stunning live vocal from guest vocalist Tracey Thorn and it's a delight to watch. I wonder if they have the record for the longest time to introduce all three full time members to the TOTP studio. 'Unfinished Sympathy' (none), 'Safe From Harm' (one) and finally all three just under four years later. Mushroom looks serene at the keyboard. 3D twiddles with something hidden from view and Daddy G looks cool as anything and marvelously unflustered on the decks. Quite a feat when you have giant flames all around, one of which
rages feet away from what looks like a full stack of sound equipment. That was....eye-catching. Tracey at one point throws a smile to her left. I could make a guess why. A brilliant, brilliant few minutes that should've been allowed to go on to its full length.

Ini Kamoze; Still a very striking and fun record and Ini's interrupting of the movie sequences was very effective. I didn't notice the siren on the model's head last time.

Sleeper; All the formula Britpop boxes safely ticked there.

A very pleasing gap then onto....

The Human League; "The Uman League"as Bruno surprisingly calls them put in another fine, cheery performance (particularly from Phillip) in front of some very eye-catching visuals. Enjoy while it lasts. I still find the single a bit medicinal.

Barry White; A legend indeed Bruno but very underwhelming on this song. Still there's only one Barry White.

Celine Dion; A live vocal for 'Think Twice' clawing ever so slowly up to the chart summit. Bruno tells us she's recently married and she looks like she's brought the marquee with her though it's got a bit mis-shapen en route to White City. No, I still really like this song just has such poise to it and a very strong performance which may have been the factor that finally lifted it to the top.

A glam closer with Sweet thrillingly burning the eyes and tearing out the ears with 'Blockbuster'. Well done for selecting the Jan '73 clip. I did see Andy Scott a few years ago at the BFI as a guest at 'Music Believed Wiped' hosted by Diddy David. He had long blonde hair and seemed to be doing ok.

    1. Oh yes Rednex as well. Sorry.
A not very big stage in the first place filled with prairie clutter, a bonfire and a woman in a long skirt doing the do si do at rave tempo. I will say grudgingly that that was an impressive performance.

  8. Stage school brats ULTIMATE KAOS open up and it's all rather naff. Not sure what the significance of 456 was. Wasted on me.

MASSIVE ATTACK have got hold of TRACEY THORN and dressed her as a tiger. "Protection" a great slow, smooth record. A touch of class amongst a load of RnB tonight.

INI KAMOZE – Glad this did well. Enjoyed seeing this again. Followed by one of my fave brit-pop bands SLEEPER. "Inbetweener" a storming indie tune and I picked up the album that followed which is brilliant as well.

    R. KELLY – Clearly filmed 2 weeks ago (poor audience) and you can hear Barry White knocking this out of the park. Unfortunately R Kelly doesn't have the vocal chops for this and it all comes over a bit sleeezy.

Never realised "Tell Me When" was such a big hit for The League. Better staging and lighting tonight and it works really well.

Here comes BARRY WHITE to show Mr Kelly what class looks like. "Practice What You Preach" a bit dull but Barry delivers a strong performance.

Half a million record sales gets you CELINE DION on her honeymoon. I wonder if her manager husband gave a chance to "Think Twice" about this appearance. Quality vocal. Love Celine, love her voice, this is just beautiful.

Rednex Repeat to end on (such fun).

Nice plug for the new look show and the new TOTP magazine. Both will launch in February 1995 using the new logo. A nice bit of corporate merchandise tie-in. For £1.25 you got an East 17 cover and a free cassette tape with Mary J Blige, Jodeci, James Hall and Love Happy. Get my wallet now...
