  1. Quick with the critiques this week, but very late to the forum for the next editions as I’ll be on holiday abroad and won’t get back until the following Monday – that is, unless it’s chosen as the day for The Queen’s state funeral and thus a bank holiday which may affect my flight back.

I’m actually glad these programmes were shown as scheduled – can’t remember whose passing caused a previous BBC4 Friday night to be blacked out some months back.

This’ll be a fast review, mind you. Seen most of these already on a previous show.

Still got that stupid hairstyle, Mark?

Many chart hits get completely ignored, and we’re subjected to Haddaway again.

Taylor gives us an off key truck driver gear change vocal after the spoken bit, followed by an insipid cover which even copies the wood blocks on Baz’s superior version. Given his outro, Mark appears to be a crossdresser.

Mister Self Important’s back and he’s borrowed Carter USM’s car for the video.

Non-mugshots: Deborah Harry loses the question mark from her song title, and we’re treated to the glorious sight of Jesus Jones next to the Jesus and Mary Chain.

What a sad way for us to say goodbye to Kim Wilde, looking like Sarah from Saint Etienne but shitting all over Yvonne Elliman’s finest work.

Chak and Dem also for a third time, and a repeat to boot. No-one else in the chart available to go to Elstree, then?

What a wonderfully original sound from Usura and such a great video. I’m lying.

Kenny Thomas? Wondered where he’d gone. Obviously popped out from his car park trailer for some shopping as Ken only gets a breakers slot this time. Third cover in this edition already.

AC/DC with “Big Gun”. Missus! Taken from the soundtrack of “Last Action Hero”, hence the Arnie cameo.

The Levellers. No “Fifteen Years”, is it?

Two quick FFs for an act and two songs I can’t stand, followed by Gabrielle finally sounding higher in the mix.

We end with a pogoing tosser behind Mark. Summed this show up for me.

Off soon for a few days to a country where they won't have wall to wall sombre TV coverage. Looking forward to it.

  2. Four songs at peak position this week outside the Top 40, with no TOTP for them:

No.42 Oleta Adams - I Just Had To Hear Your Voice
This was not as successful as Get Here, and would be her last single for two years, before a brief comeback in 1995 before finishing up.

No.46 Shaggy - Soon Be Done
How do you follow up a No.1 single Carolina? This was disappointing to not even be able to get into the top 40 with the follow up. Shaggy would return in a couple of years in 1995 with two top 5 singles to make up for it.

    No.49 Martha Wash - Runaround
Former Weather Girls member Martha Wash comes up with a single with the same name as the Mike Read presented children's programme from the late 70s from Southern TV. Like Shaggy, Wash would return to the singles chart in 1995 with better success.

No.62 Chris Isaak - San Francisco Days
He of Wicked Game and Blue Hotel was now at a crossroads in his career with this flop, and would not return until 1999 where one more single also flopped outside the top 40, and that was pretty much it for Isaak in terms of the UK charts.

  3. Arthur, looks like it's just you and me left on here. Anyway, just watching TOTP 5th March 1987 on BBC2 on a Thursday night, and not sure why BBC2 is showing this 1987 episode of TOTP at 10pm and just before Newsnight.

    1. Still here, but don’t comment these days as 90% would be negative. Waiting for the mid 90s revival 😊

  4. Wow - 5 songs we've seen before tonight. Repeat City.

HADDAWAY – Seems to be enjoying the backing dancers.

TAYLOR DAYNE – A really odd choice of cover and I found myself enjoying "Can’t Get Enough Of Your Love" much more than in the breaker slot last week.

Nice understated video from MICHAEL JACKSON. "Will You Be There" another fine tune from Dangerous. How many singles now?

KIM WILDE – Looking and sounding like SAW Kylie with a very insipid cover of "If I Can’t Have You". Mic problems don't help, more of that later.

CHAKA DEMUS & PLIERS – Thought I was bored of "Tease Me" then the beat kicked in and I was sold again, Really great tune.

    Breakers:
USURA – Sweat Jesus what is this.
KENNY THOMAS – Stay. Please don't.
AC/DC Be Back - "Terminated" this one quickly thank goodness
THE LEVELLERS – At Number 12 and must not have been available for a studio performance which they well deserved.

M-PEOPLE – Second mic problem in "One Night" making Heathers vocals sound really weedy and echoey.

Party time with GLORIA GAYNOR and the audience are having fun at least.

GABRIELLE – Much stronger performance of "Dreams" this week and I loved the outfit.

Speaking of outfits, do you think Mark borrowed Taylors dress after hours?

  5. Weird mix this week, some great stuff like M People, Haddaway, Gabrielle, Chaka Demus and Gloria Gaynor mixed with subpar Levellers and Jacko and rubbish cover versions from acts who have done a lot better. The Breakers were all eh.
