  1. Take That - the group on tour in Germany and presenting their whole video, and already millionaires in 1993 in their early 20s with Robbie Williams still a teenager, it was an incredible run to change their lives forever at this early stage of their careers with this No.3 single over the Christmas and New Year period.

Shanice - at only No.47 being invited to the TOTP studio, I would rather have seen Prefab Sprout who hadn't been in the TOTP studio for ages, or Sultans Of Ping who went up further from their Breakers slots last week, now at peak positions this week at No.24 and No.26, they lost out to Shanice who was not even in the Top 40 yet and jumped the queue, but with nothing below No.22 shown on TOTP this week in favour of Shanice and an exclusive by Duran Duran, it was a little cruel for Sprout and Sultans.

Sunscreem - at peak this week in the studio, but nowhere near as good as their next and finest single coming up in March 1993 called Pressure Us which also made Top 20........can't wait!

The Breakers - with nothing lower than No.22 on the show this week in terms of Top 40 positions, The Breakers positions went as high as No.6 with Faith No More, and Peter Gabriel's return to the charts in quite a while, now at No.17 and unlucky not to be played in full the following week when at peak of No.10, this clip is all we were to get with Gabriel's new video.

  2. I've temporarily changed the comments from embedded to pop-up because it was getting increasingly difficult to leave comments - I think maybe something to do with cookies being blocked? - anyway, lets see how it goes for a while.

Really looking forward to seeing '93 editions again. A year I have great affection for and rather undervalued in music terms. As I recall an open minded, rather hippyish year with the acts that defined the middle of the decade emerging.

    Things to hope for on the editions;
    Full chart rundown continuing
    Tony will improve even more
    Ever more elaborate set designs
Great female soul/dance voices doing it live.
    New bands
Mark's hair and dress sense will bear the influence of the ever more colourful new age/grungey fashions (unlikely)

Sybil now revealing her place of address or possibly where she got her outfit starting off the show with another cover. Should be an instant no thanks but she has a sweet voice and you just can't bugger up 'The Love I Lost' if you stick to the tune. The next one of hers is actually one of my singles of the year.

Song No. 2 / cover No. 2 courtesy of Take That who get the honour of a Madness style multi member introduction to their chart accompanying single. Ironically the member even then deemed to be the 'mad' one stays silent and just smiles politely. He's the singer here though which is why I can perfectly enjoy it now. Wouldn't have done then. Lots of bouncing about / backflips / curtains.

Shanice sitting down and not smiling quite so broadly due to the song being a mopey soundtrack to 'Beverley Hills 90210' apparently. Only ever saw bits of it on 'The Word' which had a weird obsession with it at the time.

Another studio appearance from PWEI with more bouncing around and lead vocals from the bloke that isn't Clint. Jaunty and daft .

A rather go hum edition gets a major lift with a great satellite linkups pointing where this year is heading perhaps. Agrarian with plenty of possibly not regularly washed clothes, the Development return performing in a mock up of a barn. The girl looks groovy while the 'elder' sits in a rocking chair playing air guitar with an old boot. Speech wanders amiably around in a top that now sits in racks at festivals and Camden market hoping to be bought but which was very popular at college in St.Albans. Ahh The long lost shopping arcade above the car park! (sobs).

You would've been guaranteed at least a top 30 hit with a band name like Sunscreem in '92 / ' 93 and a cover of Marianne Faithful's not remotely rave friendly song from '79 got them a high placing. You can't accuse them of doing an obvious cover though it's fairly unmemorable.

Breakers far too brief but I enjoyed Tony's sarky intro to Faith No More's cover of The Commodores. Another very unobvious cover but does sound very like the original.

Next up, whoah, fantastic song! Duran Duran, not a group you'd place at the forefront of post rave pop music put out, for me, a total '90s classic and the best Suede single that Suede never recorded. That guitar solo! Great times hearing that in early '93 and again here. Simon singing some big notes live. Has an element of risk.

Whitney is still there with her cover that Tony doesn't get sarcastic about. How many times has Kevin Costner appeared on the show on video at No.1?

  4. Blimey! Close to midnight on Sunday evening and I make top four. Was everyone celebrating the Jubilee (I was ambivalent but happy to join in) or is this forum beginning to peter out?

It appears the Songwriters’ Strike of 1992 (copyright TV Cream) has seeped into the next year. As Basil Fawlty would have shouted, “Sybil!”

Dorky appears to give us a possible list of the next few exclusives, before the next act. Was Robbie too off his tits to say anything in the intro for TT? Sound down for the countdown.

I agree, the sublime Prefab Sprout or The The deserved a slot more than Shanice’s latest non-mugshot syrupy effort in the top 5 of a country insignificant to this programme.

Oo! The ginger one in PWEI gets to sing / rap. To quote TV Cream again, the lads’ biggest hit and yet the record company dumps them.

Arrested Development give us the Wurzels backdrop again. Great backing, sincere but cloying lyrics, and a great boot shine for full effect.

I didn’t realise until I checked tonight that notorious Mick Jagger muse Marianne Faithfull actually had four UK top ten hits. Decent cover by Sunscreem and thankfully no lyrics about raping this time.

En Vogue do Mariah Carey type stuff but better.

Not keen on covers usually, not a fan of “Lovely Day”, so guess my viewpoint.

Peter Gabriel living on past glories and, ahem, running out of steam.

Tony gets rightly satirical about covers just as Faith No More sell their soul.

Ordinary song next, then the current obligatory FF.

Tony gives us a second weekly go at his new catchphrase, “Easy!”, which I prefer.

  5. We open with another mediocre cover, the calendar may have changed but the curse of 1992 endures.

Take that on video, they're obviously making a bit more cash now.

Shanice tries for hit No.2 and misses completely. Identikit pop soul with a Whitney flavour. Was most surprised by her top and trousers being all in one when she stood up.

When did Mick Hucknall join PWEI? Another that sounds better on the record than it does live.

Arrested Development with one of the most patronising songs of all time, they even have their "Wendell" shining a shoe in time with the music! What were they thinking? Well produced, but it sticks in the craw.

Mediocre cover time again with Sunscreem, the vocalist doesn't have the lived in voice of Marianne despite her best efforts.

Barely seconds of the Breakers, then Duran Duran make a triumphant return to the Top 10 with... a bit of a dirge, to be honest. Never got the appeal of this.

    Still there.

  6. Angelo, I'm sorry but this pop up comments platform is shiite compared to the embedded format, as for one thing it doesn't allow reply other people's comments, only for new comments, so this is meant to be a reply to THX if you can embed it accordingly.

THX, hope you managed to see/watch on TV the Duran Duran performance on stage at the Jubilee party night on Saturday following the Queen's surprise Paddington Bear sketch at Buckingham Palace just before We Will Rock You opener by Queen. I thought Duran Duran were the pick of all the performers, and made the younger acts with more energy look like second rate performers. I thought Simon Le Bon and his band were just superb with the two songs they did accompanied by Nile Rodgers on stage.

    1. I'm afraid I saw none of the Jubilee Concert, I was just too tired to watch it, but I did hear it was entertaining.

  7. Embedded is definitely better, Dory, when it works. I'll change it back. I don't know why it's playing up like it is at the moment.

  8. Oops forgot to add comments to this ep!

Take That on video with Robbie absolutely lapping it up. You can see here the seeds of him going from a backing member of the band to... what he's going to become.

I can never hear Ordinary World without thinking of Lucas and Walliams' Rock Profile of them: 'we had hits in the 90s. We had Ordinary World '.

    1. Yes! I thought of Rock Profiles too! DD were obsessed with it in that sketch.

  9. All the way from the west end, of New York, it's the rather wonderful Sybil! Great voice and the first great tune of 1993. Is this a PWL tune, it has that vibe to it? My word, that dress is having to do a lot of work to stay up isn't it 🤪

Robbie too hung over to get a line before the rather fine Could It Be Magic video then back in the studio for Shanice. Still smiling but with a dreadfully soppy teen ballad from 90210 where all the school kids were in their late 20s.

PWEI did really well for themselves for a couple of years. Certainly adding a lot of fun to Indie. Unfortunately this is one of their hits I don't like. Probably went down well in the student bars at Uni's up and down the country.

Off to Atlanta it's the fabulous Mr Wendall from Arrested Development. Always like them and this is a quality tune and a great performance. Quality.

Sunscreem back in the studio. Unbelievable that I had managed to completely forget this band until watching these repeats. Clearly should have been paying more attention as I've liked all their hits. This one not so much but still pleasant trippy listening.

    Breakers:
    En Vogue: Classy
    Soul System: Decent cover alert.
    Peter Gabriel: Love this record!
Faith No More: Unnecessary cover alert!

Ordinary World is a stunning tune from Duran Duran. Do we have the best tune of 1993 already? Absolute classic. Great live band as well.

Think I will always really like this edition of TOTP
