  1. We see the last of Oke and Rose as presenters, as the show gradually goes back to a one-presenter format by October. I see that the show is still experimenting with the chart rundown, now doing the 20 to 11 chart rundown over the Dr Alban video as a bonus to the Top 10 rundown at its now settled position just before the No.1.

Brian May - finally we get to see the video before it falls down the chart, and I must say that May seemed to like his full front-on pose on the camera for most of the video, and I remember at the time thinking that he was trying to sound as much like Freddie Mercury as possible, this song did very well to make the Top 5 I thought, considering this wasn't a Queen record.

The Shamen - very deserving No.1, and this theatrical, atmospheric and above all interactive style for the single came off very well, and I just loved the two-way interaction between the two lead players in the group with their superb on-stage chemistry. Absolutely brilliant idea to perform this live in a theatre style. 'Got any veras.....lovely.....ahahahahaha'

    1. Was really impressed with that rendition of Ebeneezer Goode!

  2. While we give great thanks to Anonymous for making this show available, it is also on YouTube posted a few months ago with another presenter/narrator with some interesting comments across the show, along with the usual YouTube viewer comments of course:

  3. Our long national nightmare is over, thanks for these uploads, consider your duty done. Until Gary Glitter shows up again, or something.

EMF - bought this, I really liked it because it was all UFO-sounding (no idea if that was the intention). Hearing it now I'm more aware of the Kevin the Teenager vocals, but I think it's lasted pretty well. Nice that they've brought their end of term art fayre projects onto the stage, too.

Manics with one of their worst singles, that's without reckoning with what happened to Ritchie. Persevering with the shirtless look, James, and those aren't really tattoos, are they? No, they're not. Overblown and unlikeable. Mind you, you should hear what Fatima Mansions did to Bryan Adams on the other A-side!

Inspirals, now, I couldn't hum this back to you, but it did perk things up on the show, rollicking indie tune that I wasn't that familiar with (or maybe I just forgot).

Bleurgh, Brian May goes all sincere, obviously inspired by something close to him but maybe a tad ill-advised. Got a big hit out of it, though. I thought he'd ditched the guitar until he whipped it out a minute before the end.

Happy Mondays, now, what rhymes with thinkin'? Brilliant, that'll do. From the arse end of the band's history, the album was a massive flop in an era where it was more difficult not to get decent album sales, and they seemed like yesterday's men (and woman). Brave to give Shaun a live mic.

Follow the Mondays with... Daniel O'Donnell! Obviously. Wouldn't Shaun have chased the grans away? So bland it almost sets a new yardstick for blandness, and Mr O'Donnell inspired the worst episode of Father Ted, so we have that to blame him for.

Breakers get about two seconds each (maybe all we needed to see of The Wedding Present in their underpants).

Soul II Soul with a melody-free album track, that'll keep the viewers watching! What happened to their knack for a decent tune?

Then The Shamen do an all-live version of Ebeneezer Goode which is a right shambles. This is now what the Great British Public bought, guys! It doesn't even have the Sid James bit!

Fare thee well, Femi, good riddance Ade.

    1. The version of Ebeneezer Goodge performed on this show is called The Shamen Vocal Mix.

  4. Oh, I forgot - how will the TOTP repeats handle R Kelly?!

    1. Either edit him and any easy to edit references made about him out or skip if it's too hard or impossible to edit.

    2. Mic, 1, 2, 1, 226 March 2022 at 21:42

I had a look ahead and there are 2 Gary Glitter hosted editions in the mid '90s. One from Dec '96 features Nowaysis doing 'I'd like To Teach The World To Sing', genuinely one of my favourite things from the Britpop period. I remember us all laughing in our house at uni watching that.

    3. Gary hosts three episodes in December 94,95 and 96.

  5. Four songs at peak position outside the Top 40 this week by previous chart regulars, with no TOTP for them this time round:

No.49 Kim Wilde - Who Do You Think You Are
No what pray tell is this song about? No doubt Kim will kiss and make up with the fella at the end.

    No.53 Sophie B Hawkins - California Here I Come
It probably explains why she flopped with this second single of hers in the charts. If it was titled Britain Here I Come, it could have had Top 10 potential.

    No.59 Inner City - Praise
It's been three years and six singles since they were last on TOTP, and still no luck for them as this one just didn't even get near. I wonder if we'll ever see them on TOTP again?

No.61 The B52s - Tell It Like It Is
Follow-up single to the more successful Good Stuff which got to No.21 a couple of months earlier. The colourful group would now take a break for two years until their return in 1994 with the theme tune to The Flintstones movie with Halle Berry, which earned immediate success with a chart position of No.3.

    1. The same question was asked about Inner City a month or so ago so I'll repeat the answer. Inner City came back in 1999 after a ten-year absence from the show for a re-make of "Good Life".

    2. Another male heavy episode, although as an indie fan (or "indie" depending on how technical we're being about that term) this was a bit more pleasing than the last one.

I'd forgotten this EMF one but it's not bad. Manics with a cover that worked in getting them their highest chart position yet, but they then mostly buried it. I quite like it but I can see why they would rather people just remember them for original songs.

Not the best Mondays or Inspirals singles, Madchester is clearly in its death throes, but still good to see them both.

The breakers include some we've seen before, another Wedding Present single (and I enjoyed them getting a good chunk on the Story of 92, they deserved it with all those singles!) which is alright, and Bob Marley reissue that's slightly ahead of the 93-4 reggae revival.

Is this DOD's first introduction to the nanas of Britain? (Assume he was already big in Ireland?) The start of a long career of selling consistently without needing much publicity because of the devoted fan base.

Soul II Soul's most boring single ever needs more Caron Wheeler.

And a weird Shamen remix but I appreciate them doing something a bit different to the previous performance and the video mix, given it's 92 and every number one is hanging around for ages.

    3. PS Bye Adrian Rose and thanks for nothing!

  6. Thanks again for all your help this year, Anonymous. Hope you get a decent rest now!

Poor Femi. Missing out on five repeat royalty cheques as she was unlucky enough to co-host half of her TOTPs with that turd.

EMF, they’re here with an EMF-by-numbers effort.

MSP were painful. Put a shirt on, James!

Oo! 20 to 11 now, with a smattering of Alban.

I enjoyed the Carpets track when I listened but can’t remember a note of it now.

Early footage of Brian May trying to sugar the pill of a song whose title is a bit too close to Fred’s passing for my taste.

Shaun Ryder in Patrick MacGoohan garb, but no way this would make Number 6 (see what I did there?) Unusual backstage parking for that unusual cuddly toy cuddler.

Christ, Danial O’Donnell makes Foster and Allen seem punk in comparison. My PC bled syrup when this was on.

Another previous week exclusive bungs up the next show. Only half the clip heard due to incessant waffle.

Femi does a Ponce and talks over half of the Boyz II Men breaker as well.

Good grief! If only The Wedding Present had been in the studio with this!

Bob Marley with a bit of that sort of reggae disco.

Soul II Soul, just right? Actually just so-so, or should that be So II So?

The Shamen with a vesrion as terrible as that codpiece.

Bye, Femi, and thanks for at least being different. As for that prick Rose, just f#ck off.

  7. Well, that worked out fine for all the lower chart entries and exclusives on this show...

EMF and Inspiral Carpets got no higher, Happy Mondays peaked at 31 and Soul II Soul’s effort was a top 38 smash. The only real beneficiary was Eoin McLove... er, Daniel O’Donnell who made number 20.

  8. Funny seeing Shaun Ryder have to check the lyrics on a bit of paper a couple of times. Maybe Bez who was missing usually whispered them to him when he forgot.

  9. Still rocking those shorts it's EMF with second album syndrome meaning all the decent tunes were on the first album. A bit of a nothing track really .

More from The Manics and this time a rather odd cover choice. I've never really liked this song and it will prove rather prophetic for these lads. They played at the Ukraine concert this week and chose "If you tolerate this.." which was a great decision.

Oh goodness it's woolfe-boy and fairly useless.
Nice to see more of the chart over the terrible Dr Alban video (very very briefly).

I'm falling in love with The Inspiral Carpets all over again. Another great tune from them. A fine piece of Indie music.

Still can't stand this BRIAN May track. Video is vomit enducing. Now we have the new entries from 31-40. Bit a mess reallty and impossible to follow the chart.

Is it really 1990? A rather smart looking and lifeless Shaun and his Happy Monday's give us a new tune, or would if they could find it. This is poor. And where's Bez?

    Daniel O'Donnell. Shoot me now…

    Breakers:
Boy George: Brilliant. Should have been Top Ten.
    Boyz II Men: Aaaaahhhhh.
Wedding Present: Still getting worse every month.
Bob Marley: Stunning remix of a stunning tune.

Soul II Soul bring some much needed class to proceedings. Nowhere near their best but 2nd only to Inspirals tonight. Enjoyed this a lot.

I think Jon Secada has moved into the Top Ten permanently. Undercover Number Two?

What is this dreadful remix of Ebenezer Goode? I must admit I did smile at the exchange at the start. Points for doing something different. Don't do it again!

    1. I also did like the alternative Ebeneezer Goode performance here. It's a case of 'Ebeneezer is the main Geeeeeezer.....!!' according to Mr C.
