  1. Two weeks in row in the studio for Ce Ce Peniston with two different performances, and no repeat? Good Lord, how TOTP has changed, and this to the detriment of other songs having to wait till they are inside the Top 20 to get a Breakers slot, let alone a full play. Not sure if this is fair, and would much rather have had Saint Etienne in the studio last week at No.21 instead of Ce Ce Peniston not even in the Top 75 at that point.

Elton John - First solo single since 1990, not counting the duet with George Michael in 1991, and first one without the hat, as his new hair replaced the various hats on his videos for the first time since 1977, so this was the new look and new hair which was to become the norm from this point on, and seemed to work quite well, as the new single reached no.10 at peak.

The Breakers - Wilson Phillips's first single for a year since You're In Love, and they seem to only get Breakers slots on TOTP since their first single Hold On which went Top 10 of course. This new 1992 single was not as good as the iconic songs on the first album in the 1990-1991 period, but somehow got to No.18 at peak this week and which was second only to Hold On for success in the UK charts.

  2. Ce Ce, agree with Dory, as I said in the previous comments, there's no need for this to be on twice, practically in a row, with only a KWS between her appearances.

Ooh, little bit of politics, here's the Levellers who Jimmy Carr would presumably like to see exterminated. I was never a big fan, but you can see here they put on a good show, very exuberant.

Lots of stuff in the media this week about Wayne's World's 30th anniversary. They've littered one of the spin-off hits' videos with clips from the movie here, certainly getting their money's worth from the Bohemian Rhapsody bit. The film was basically a bunch of catchphrases and cameos strung together, but Wayne's World 2 is actually pretty funny, so of course nobody went to see that after they flocked to the first one in 1992. Oh, this song: commercial grunge, and every bit as unappetising as that sounds.

Richard Marx and band blow-dried to within an inch of their lives for a song which I always thought was about a murder, and therefore quite sinister. Comes across as a bit dull on this play, mind you.

But preferable to Guns 'n' Roses ruining Bob Dylan's theme song to an old Sam Peckinpah movie, which is a reflective eulogy to the dead of the Old West, and on this rendition is a ludicrously overblown racket with endless guitar solos and self-indulgent wailing. Absolutely dreadful.

Sir Elt with a hit everyone forgets about, it's OK and kudos to him for always turning up for TOTP, but the restlessness of the audience speaks volumes.

Breakers: Kingmaker! They had some decent tunes before being washed away by Britpop, which is kind of odd if you think about it. Marillion: boring, Wilson Phillips: hard to tell, but the wigs are terrible. Don-E will be back. Then straight into the mush at Number 1.

  3. Four songs lower down the chart at peak position this week for previous chart regulars, and missing out on a TOTP appearance this time round:

No.22 Thomas Dolby - Close But No Cigar
First Top 40 single for eight years since Hyperactive in 1984, and no celebratory comeback for Dolby by TOTP, as this week's Breakers went no lower than No.19, so Dolby missed out on what would have been a welcome return to the show.

No.28 Joe Cocker - Now That The Magic Has Gone
Indeed, his last single did get a Breakers slot on the 5th March TOTP when at No.31, but this one which got higher, was unlucky not to be on The Breakers this week, along with of course Thomas Dolby.

No.43 The Beatmasters - Dunno What It Is (About You)
Dunno what it is about The Beatmasters, but since they stopped 'featuring' a performer, like The Cookie Crew, PP Arnold, Betty Boo, they could no longer make the Top 40 on their own, and this was to be their last ever single, so the curtain comes down on one of THE finest groups of the new house music scene that sprung up in the late 80s.

No.56 Joan Armatrading - Wrapped Around Her
One of the various follow-up singles to Drop The Pilot that got to No.11 in 1983, which all flopped outside the Top 50, and this new one in 1992 was her last ever single in the UK charts, so the curtain comes down on Armatrading's chart career that spans back to 1976 with Love & Affection.

    1. That's weird - Dolby's Close But No Cigar popped into my head this morning. Coincidence. And it's his wife Kathleen Beller's birthday today.

Joan Armatrading is still going strong, she just doesn't trouble the singles charts anymore.

  4. Thanks again to Anonymous. Luckily for you, we’re hetting close to the end of the Ponce so you can relax again soon.

Oh God, it’s the nightmare team this time.
You again, Cecilia? Pointless. Keep on walkin’ off my screen.

Dorky says “On A Ragga Trip” again in the countdown. Dickhead.

Oo! A live gig on show. Always loved this Levellers track. A crusty and superior version of “Old Red Eyes Is Back”.

Ugly Kid Joe with an unlovable turd of a track.
Groucho? Harpo? No, it’s Yawno Marx with stairlift pop as shown by those stool hoggers. Stand up, any one of you lazy sods!

Knocking On Heaven’s Door? I’m not answering, especially not to that prick in a kilt again.

Not “The (Number) One” next, Dorky, Give up. The syrup was more memorable than that song. At least Elton faced the audience this time.

Kingmaker! “Ten Years Asleep” was their biggie.

Marillion cover Charisma Records’ first hit by Rare Bird and do it faster and worse.

Wilson Phillips. Eyes say thank you, ears say can we have “Hold On” back?

Don-E sounded promising, unlike that rubbish at the top.

Dorky shows his grasp of chart history by implying KWS have been at the top as long as Bryan Adams or Skahespears Sister. We lost Simon Mayo, Gary Davies and Jakki Brambles for this talentless void?

  5. Double-worst presenters?! Not a bad thing this would have been lost to time were it not for Anonymous! Not a bad selection of songs though, several I haven't heard for years, with Ugly Kid Joe and The Levellers my favourites. I'd forgotten The One was so recent.

  7. Another top ten hit for Ce Ce and she's changed her hat since last week and pops up on the TARDIS set.

Now here's a band I really grew to love over their chart run. A bit of Irish charm from The Levellers. Yet another Greatest Hits album I picked up. Nice link up with their gig in Paris. Liked that.

I do love this tune from Ugly Kid Joe.. completely bonkers piss-take on a rock ballad. Extreme take note, they're laughing at you! Great fun.

Huge US star Richard Marx back with a lovely story telling ballad set in Hazard USA. I think this is a really well written sad song. Nice.

More rock music from GnR next with a cover for charity. They do a good job with this Dylan tune and a really big hit for them as well. Nice to see a live performance in the video not just a pretend one.

Elton makes it back to TOTP with a new wig for a new year. Seriously Roy Cropper. Nice tune though. Sounds like we are heading into his Disney phase.

    Breakers:
    Kingmaker: who? Hmm…
Marillion: Never got the appeal.. next…
Wilson Phillips: Sounds awful from this clip
    Don-E: Not for me..
    0/4

KWS back again. No day job to go to? Who's the chubby Grandpa singing along in the background?

I'm off to feed the ducks..
