For some as yet unexplained reason BBC4 will not be showing any editions of Top of the Pops hosted by Adrian Rose. So a huge thanks goes to Anonymous for making this edition from November 28th 1991 available here at WeTransfer (new link version)
Not being on BBC4 really sucks

Got to thank Anonymous for furnishing this show for us in the absence of a BBC4 showing, but there is no sound on it??
ReplyDeleteJust checking that it is not just me and my computer, but can anyone confirm?
Dory, Having checked my original and downloaded this the sound is fine, must be an issue your end.
DeleteNo sound on mine either
ReplyDeleteplays fine in vlc player?
DeleteThe WeTransfer download automatically goes into Quicktime as I have a Mac, but I do have the VLC player, so how do you get the file into the VLC player, when already automatically downloaded into Quicktime?
Deletehave now recoded audio to aac its an audio codec issue, now reuploading new file, stand by....
DeleteDory, try this version, if it works ok please post reply then ill ask angelo to adjust link etc.
Deletehttps://we.tl/t-IYInM8Y5mK
Ah lovely - Works for me now. Thanks for doing that!
DeleteSame here, thanks Anonymous.
DeleteGood Lord, as if three shows were not enough to blog this week, looks like Angelo you got another three to put up next week, cos apart from the two shows by BBC4, the one after those, 19th Dec, is a Adrian Rose hosted show!
DeleteDory, Angelo will get plenty of practice at three-show weekends for us, looking at how that idiot Rose's shows were spaced out over 1992.
DeleteIts not too bad - I can put my feet up for at least a couple of weeks after they show the Xmas 91 edition at the end of this month. BBC4 are showing repeats of the 84 Xmas and 88 Xmas shows the next two Fridays afterwards.
DeleteAre they showing Christmas Day '84 or the one a few days later with Lenny Henry? Either will be good. Missed the 1st half of the 25th Dec one and haven't seen the other one at all. I wish BBC4 would broadcast the one from the end of 1972. I think it's the only Christmas period one that can be shown that hasn't yet been repeated. They'd just have to edit out one link with Tony Blackburn and Rolf Harris. Would be great to see that on BBC4.
Delete25th December 84 is the one scheduled (for Friday 3rd Dec).
DeleteWould Rolf still have to be edited out? He has served his conviction now I think. He got six years in 2014, so that must've ended in 2020.
BBC4 could show all the DLT editons now too.
Agreed.
DeleteEast Side Beat - I remember thinking that the original version by Christopher Cross in 1980, which bizarrely only got to No.69 in the UK, was such a good song, and then Saxon covered it in 1988 doing marginally better to get to No.52, but now this Italian group in 1991 going straight in at No.6 this week and would reach No.3 at best, well this was also great.
ReplyDeleteAlthough there has never been an official video for it, I remember this new East Side Beat version had a sailing boat makeshift video on late night ITV at the time made by some video buff which I think I have on VHS somewhere, but I don't believe the 'official video' claim on Tube where someone has put out a video of motorbikes riding like the wind, and also judging by the uTube comments.
George Michael & Elton John - this was so much better than Elton's original in 1974, mainly due to George Michael's input, and one of the best purchases I made on iTunes for a pop video some years ago, and a firm favourite in my iTunes library as far as videos go.
Altern-8 - after the first appearance two shows ago with a gorgeous front girl on vocals, we now had a change in front girl personnel for this second appearance on TOTP, having now risen further to No.3 by the end of November 1991. Can't say I like this change, as I would have loved to see the original singer back a second time instead of the new one this week, but hey, we don't know the full story behind the scenes, so I'm just pleased the group got a second invite, albeit with an MC also added in for good measure to bolster the performance.
Queen - following the death of Freddie Mercury, the song which had already fallen out of the Top 40 earlier in the month, and was down to No.62 the previous week to this show, and out of the Top 75 this week, would unsurprisingly go on to re-enter next week at No.34 and then peak again at No.27 for December after this week's playout to commemorate him.
Thanks for this - is the reason Adrian didn't sign the repeats contract that he was seven years old?
ReplyDeleteEast Side Beat with a chilling portent of what was to come, the subpar, mediocre covers that would dominate the next two or three years. Performers utterly charisma-free, unremarkable at best, tinny synths, I'd rather see something outrageously bad than as boring as this.
Nirvana, don't think Kurt was really playing that guitar, do you? Apparently his vocal style here was a tribute to Morrissey. No wonder he was depressed. "Load up on drugs, kill your friends!" he cheerily suggests. Anyway, stuck out like a sore thumb in 1991, was the winner of John Peel's Phantom 50, shook things up decisively (or so the narrative goes - East Side Beat had something to say about that). But I've heard it too many times now.
James look a bit daft after that with their attempts to make an impression (bloke in dress, wild dancing), but this is an OK tune from them, with Tim showing off his range. Rather this than Sit Down for the umpteenth time.
"Ladies and gentlemen, Mr Elton John!" Pure cheese, good live vocals, but really overdoing it in the showbiz sincerity. Crowd were into it though - Elt seems to have turned up because he knew it was being filmed.
Altern-8, ah, this is a better performance from them, a lot more confident, mostly because it sounds almost identical to the record. Distracted by the Cyberman on stilts, however - didn't look safe!
Whackson still there, then the tribute to Freddie. I remember the first I'd heard he'd died was when John Peel announced it on his show late at night, and he played Crazy Little Thing Called Love as tribute.
Three songs this week at peak INSIDE the Top 40, and not to get shown or mentioned at all on TOTP during their chart run:
ReplyDeleteNo.24 The Happy Mondays - Judge Fudge
Really like this one, and shocked that it did not make TOTP, especially as its excellent baseline and video should have taken it much higher up the charts:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFf1J7ITetU
No.25 Oceanic - Wicked Love
Pity not to get on the show with this one, particularly considering they had just come off a huge No.3 with Insanity a couple of months earlier, and there wasn't much more to come from them, apart from two further singles in 1992, with only one making it to No.14, and the other a measly No.72!
No.31 C&C Music Factory - Just A Touch Of Love
From the soundtrack of Sister Act with Whoopi Goldberg, there doesn't seemed to be a video for it, but C&C Music Factory would have two Top 20 hits coming up in the next few months, both making it to No.15, so all is not lost for the Factory in the UK charts, and lots more to come from them!
Wow! Some big names here.
DeleteHow fickle the TOTP gods are. We're gifted with all 17 appearances of Everything I Do, the full 20 minutes of Black or White, a plethora of boring album tracks and never to chart pre releases, yet we're not gifted the debut of one of the most influential songs and acts of all time?! Thanks so nuch to Angelo and Anonymous and no thanks to whatsisface the presenter.
ReplyDeleteAnyway.
I quite liked the East Side Beat cover at the time, mainly because I didn't really know the original.
Nirvana - yes it's a weird vocal choice from Kurt but still such an incredible record and a travesty the episode is being skipped.
James - I didn't realise this got so high, given it's not one of their best remembered tracks. It's nice to have a bit of indiepop and indierock on the show after weeks of dance and dad tunes though.
George and Elton - Gah, this episode is actually really sad when you think about it. Not only are we playing out with a Freddie tribute but we have several icons who are now no longer with us. I do kind of like this duet (certainly more than a lot of Elton's duets yet to come). But it's still a pre-release so shouldn't be here yet.
Altern-8 - Not very dance heavy week compared to many this year, but the rave is still about. Not the best or worst of the rave anthems of the year.
Breakers
Simply Red - blech.
Shades of Rhythm - sounds like a weaker Insanity
Diana Ross - tell me Christmas is coming without using sleigh bells
MJ - its reign is thankfully short and so is this clip, at least compared to two episodes ago.
Queen - Not the last time they'll feature this year, sadly.
By which I mean the reason is sad, btw, not that we sadly have to hear more Queen!
DeleteI'm not so sure, I got really sick of Bohemian Rhapsody at the time! Now it's Don't Stop Me Now I'm sick of from them...
DeleteFour songs peaking OUTSIDE the Top 40 this week, mostly from previous chart regulars, and missing out on a TOTP outing:
ReplyDeleteNo.44 Beats International - In The Ghetto
Not sure if this was an Elvis cover, but it was their last ever single, as the curtain comes down on a two year career, and the fourth single in a row since releasing Lindy Layton to go it alone, and unsurprisingly also the fourth single in a row not to make the Top 40.
No.46 Ozzy Osbourne - Mama I'm Coming Home
Last single to be released for another 4 years, as his next one was not until the end of 1995, so it's goodbye to Ozzy until then.
No.53 Julian Lennon - Help Yourself
Eagerly awaited follow-up to his big Top 10 hit Saltwater, this one disappointingly failed to break the Top 40, and a pity really, as Lennon Junior didn't release that much in the way of singles throughout his career between 1984-1998.
No.63 The Commitments - Mustang Sally
Now this one I'm really surprised only got to No.63, cos its so famous, and you would have thought it was a big chart hit, but apparently not!
The Commitments is a great film, but maybe not so much because of the covers-heavy soundtrack. I think the album did OK, though.
DeleteJust seen that the That's TV Gold channel is showing all 10 of the 1979 series of The Kenny Everett Video Show tonight from 7.30pm, so lots of Hot Gossip routines, Captain Kremmen and Carla, and of course lots of pop groups at the time which had another outlet to showcase their latest singles other than on TOTP.
ReplyDeleteGreat to see these, but like DVDs there are lots of edits.
DeleteI know that TV channels do edits, the worst of which is probably ITV3 when they show the Carry On films during the day, but I thought that DVD releases have the complete originals, so I'm surprised you mention the Kenny Everett shows as being edited on DVD.
DeleteCertainly, as expected on series 2 episode 1 today, they edited out the 'n' word from Elvis Costello's 1979 No.2 song Oliver's Army performed in the Kenny Everett ITV studio.
Check the episode section, it lists all the edits.
Deletehttps://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_The_Kenny_Everett_Video_Show_episodes
Good Lord, that is sad, I mean that they edit out parts of the original broadcasts on Thames Television. Do you have a link to the original episodes unedited?
Deletesadly not recent airings were same as dvd ediys all music rights issues.
DeleteWill they be showing the 'Will Kenny Make It To 1980?' episode from New Year's Eve 1979? I've really wanted to see that mainly for the finale with The Greedies doing 'Merry Jingle' and everyone dancing around. Would be great to see that near Christmas on a TV channel.
DeleteHaving watched all 10 episodes from 1979 last night, the same channel will be showing four 1978 episodes of The Kenny Everett Video show, including one with Darts and Lindisfarne on the same show, and at 11.20pm if anyone is up still up then.
DeleteAlthough I can take or leave Kenny's sense of humour, most of the pop performers as well as the Hot Gossip dance routines are indispensable and still great viewing 40 years or so later.
Yes I'm fortunate enough to live in the part of Norfolk that gets That's TV on over the air Freeview channel 7, great seeing Benny Hill and Kenny Everett's shows rerun. Kenny's 1981 shows currently being repeated.
DeleteSad to hear about the death of Graeme Edge of The Moody Blues. I was lucky to see them headline the Acoustic Stage at Glastonbury '15. I was actually torn between them and seeing George Clinton so I didn't see the end of their set but caught most of it and it was fabulous. Graeme was actually the main man for introducing their songs as I recall, not Justin Hayward. Very funny and warm with that dry Birmingham tones. Lovely man and played some unforgettable drum parts on their records.
ReplyDeleteGraeme always struck me as being a very affable, humorous guy, and it was sad to hear of his death. Aside from his poetry and drumming, he also wrote a handful of the band's best rock songs (Higher and Higher, After You Came), and by the end of their career was the only original member left. I saw the Moodies live three times over the 90s and 00s, but my recollection is that by then Justin and John were doing most of the intros - I know from my dad (also a fan) that Justin was more shy in the early days and didn't tend to speak on stage back then.
DeleteHi John, great to see you on here again. I hope you're well. They were fantastic that night at Glastonbury, they had a crowd of all ages absolutely entranced. They did 'The Actor' which was a real treat. Graeme really should be up there among the most revered drummers in pop. 'Nights In White Satin' alone has some incredible moments on the drums.
DeleteI am well, thanks Mic - still watching the repeats and enjoying the comments here. You are right about Graeme's drumming on Nights, it really is excellent, although you have to listen carefully to notice it. All in all, a great drummer and a good bloke - he also helped pioneer the use of drum machines in the early 70s.
DeleteHi John G. Nice to see you posting comments.
DeleteRIP Graeme Edge indeed. My favourite Edge track is 'Nothing Changes' which is the album closer on the 1999 'Strange Times' CD. It's a wistful spoken piece largely but then builds to an emotional climax with Justin singing the final wistful line 'Nothing changes, and nothing stays the same, and life is still a simple game'. Sheer poetry.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rW-3HLzKepk
Fan of In Search of the Lost Chord here, 60s psych classic. Heard Dr Livingston I Presume on the radio just last week. RIP.
DeleteThe ITV Chart show Top 10 following this TOTP show, predicted correctly only for Nirvana at No.7 for the following day's new chart, but Michael Bolton, Bizarre Inc, Altern-8, and East Side Beat they were too generous with and still had them rising up to No.6, No.4, No.3, No.2 respectively, when in actual fact on the next official chart, these tunes were at No.20, No.10, No.6, No.3:
ReplyDeletehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9eILVLwJEQ
Nowhere in the Chart Show Top 10 were George Michael & Elton John which went straight in at No.1 as a new entry, so they did not see this coming at all, and therefore still had Michael Jackson at No.1
Testing, testing, I can't get my comments to publish. Tried six times for this show already....
ReplyDeleteI had a problem like that a few weeks ago, reposted loads of times until it told me I wasn't allowed anymore. Couldn't work out why - had I used a censored word, maybe? Are there any censored words in Blogger comments?!
DeleteAnyway, I suggest posting your comment in instalments and at least we'll get most of it, plus you can work out what the offending part is.
THX, I've tried both those ideas, plus logging on under a new name. Strangely, when I do a search on my name on this thread it says it's listed one more time than is shown so there's a glitch somewhere. There was one main swear word in my unaccepted prose, and the same word got allowed last week.
DeleteI'm beginning to think Angelo may be Adrian Rose in disguise defending his honoir on this forum. I'll try one more time and maybe give up for good if it doesn't work.
Having had similar problems I just managed to post the same message twice on another episode's comments just by using the back button. I think there is some session time out that occurs preventing posting but based on when you first viewed the page rather when you click to post (sort it out Google). Alternatively, I also thought that Angelo was taking offence to what I was posting - too negative about one of his favourite bands :-)
DeleteThanks Anonymous for this. Really have wanted to see this edition and very disappointed that this one has been kept from BBC4. The first and I would wager the best of Adrian Rose's editions. Not just for Nirvana's legendary appearance but for the Queen tribute at the end. Dropping this one is like a chapter being torn out of the year's story. At least we have it here.
ReplyDeleteTo a big, big stage for East Side Beat with their cover of Christopher Cross' 'Ride Like The Wind' and I do really like this one. That tune sounds tailor made for a piano heavy dance cover and I like what they do with the hook. The original's great too but I always think it suffers a little from the parping horn sections.
Some chic female dancers join them. I think. They're so far in the background it's hard to make them out.
2nd thing and it's one of those moments. Nirvana's one and only appearance in the studio. Actually thanks to its appearance on their 'Live, Tonight, Sold Out' VHS (and DVD?) collection, Adrian Rose's link is possibly the most widely heard in the show's history. Which is something of a bitter irony wouldn't you say?
Kurt sings an octave lower and the other two joyfully piss around and it is fun to watch. Brilliant that even though Krist does nothing but muck about with the bass he manages to make it always land on the beat. Legend.
And of course that invasion. One of my best friends was actually in foundation year of art college with one of the kids that jumps on the stage. This should be the cue for merry hell to be unleashed but instead they all just stumble awkwardly about like they've just run into a swarm of bats. The camera drifts away like a frustrated parent.
James with a really good follow up to 'Sit Down', a bit long in coming but of course that was a reissue and this is their new, er, sound. Striking with the trumpet and Tim's banshee style whooping, even more to the fore on the next single.
Adrian appears. Ok. Do we need to comment. Regulation teenage curtains, quite nice shirt, not much of a personality. He introduces the collaboration by George Michael and Elton John. Spontaneous? I don't think so, not with a video shot like that. It's sledgehammer sentiments will be on plenty more times.
Aaagh! Big Brother's watching us! Albeit one with endearingly stupid phrases. To Altern 8 with another appearance for 'Active-8' and a robot who looks noticeably awkward at the end.
Breakers; A little bit of Simply Red's video for 'Stars' which I loved at the time and it's still impressive. I remember this very well so it must've been shown a few times on 'The Chart Show'. Plot; New age vagrant wanders around a desert. Er, in space. Such were the times. Mick Hucknall of course sees a mirage of a beautiful exotic woman when everyone else would see a vending machine. Shades of Rhythm; in a club, not much else. Diana Ross with a big windy, tearjerker. Hard to dislike.
Michael Jackson gets a 2nd week at No.1 and probably would've had more but there are some other megastars waiting at the door.
And then a moment that makes you forget about Nirvana and everything else. I only have a mild love of Queen, I love some of their singles, not fussed about others but even 30 years on I was fighting back tears watching that. Deeply poignant to show that video as a tribute to the recently departed Freddie Mercury. It would've been near unbearable to watch for many at the time I'm sure. Credit to the presenters and Stanley Appel for the way that was handled. At the end substituting the last montage of clips for three stills of Freddie in his prime. Beautifully done.
While I've never been a great Queen fan, I do remember the news of Freddie's death being a big shock, not least because it came just 24 hours after he announced that he had AIDS. I thought TOTP handled the tribute well, and I must admit that I am quite enjoying these Year Zero shows so far, having not watched them at the time. The quality of the presenters is variable, (though it was ever thus), but there does seem to be a new verve and energy to the direction, and it all feels that little bit slicker and faster paced.
DeleteNirvana related, worth catching their The Word appearance at this time (08/11/91). Terry Christian has a YouTube channel with some 200 (low quality definition) music act performances from the 107 episodes broadcast 1990 to 1995. Although for some reason he doesn’t include Nirvana or my favourite Stereolab.
ReplyDeleteThanks for mentioning of the Terry Christian YouTube channel Sidders. And good on the much maligned Terry for doing it. I always liked him on the show. Extraordinary collection of stuff. Always amazes me that Channel 4 never repeat any clips. They did show a compilation around 1999, bits of which I still have on VHS and the infamous Oliver Reed / L7 edition was shown I think for the channel's 25th anniversary. A '90s music goldmine that show. What are bloggers' favourite performances from the show? Among my favourites that I remember; St. Etienne and Tim Burgess; 'I Was Born On Christmas Day' just a day or two before Christmas '93. Jah Wobble's Invaders of the Heart with Sinead O'Connor; 'Visions of You', Lemonheads; 'Mrs. Robinson', Manics; 'Repeat', Primal Scream; 'Moving On Up' also Snoop Dogg, Dodgy, Arrested Development. I'm going to have to have a good look at that channel. I think I missed Nirvana when they were on.
DeleteThe St. Etienne performance of You're in a Bad Way is also right up there. The Terry Christian channel (if it is him) seems to miss out on some of the big performances - although they are elsewhere on YouTube. Noted omissions of Pulp, Lemonheads, Blur doing Girls and Boys, Manic Street Preachers as well as Nirvana and Stereolab mentioned above. I must have watched it loads, even if it was just for the band performances. Was it always an opening and closing band on the show, looks like it.

ReplyDeleteBack to Mike Smith syndrome again – Adrian Rose didn’t make much impression on me at the time I have to say. Thanks to Anonymous for allowing us to see what is a much better show than the ones they could broadcast….although it still had some FF moments.
ReplyDeleteEast Side Beat – Ride like the Wind – Yes just why wasn’t this a hit for Christopher Cross in 1980? In the States it spent three weeks at No2 behind Blondie’s ‘Call Me’. Not a bad jazzed up version proving a good song will often prevail.
Nirvana – Smells like Teen Spirit – OK, a lot of love for this one here, but am I the only one thinking ‘the emperors new clothes’? (No not the Elton John song). Descends into absolute pandemonium at the end.
James – Sound – Not a bad sound. Is this the first appearance of a megaphone on ToTP since CoCo’s ‘The Bad old Days’?
George Michael / Elton John – Don’t let the Sun go down on me – Often confused with that Nik Kershaw song this is an absolute classic. How lucky that audience was to be there and witness this. The original was good enough but this duet is stellar.
Altern-8 – Activ-8 – Curiously underwhelming.
Breakers – ‘Stars’ is my favourite song from ‘Les Miserables’…ah, this isn’t it…OK…”there out in the distance, a fugitive running, fallen from grace…”. I don’t really like Simply Red. Pass on Shades of Rhythm and baffled why Diana at No10 with a great John Bettis / Albert Hammond song is only given breaker status.
Jacko – Black and White – zzzz…ff
Queen – The Show must go on – Sad reason to see this again. Clever video though and we get it right through to the final echo although I was expecting to see a caption at the end showing Freddie’s years with us.
Just observations about nirvana. I’m their biggest fan but hated this song. Still do! Can’t get past the whole Boston rip off.
ReplyDeleteKurt was never going to make old bones was he?
Bizarrely, the only 2 Rock stars whose death upset me were both on tonight’s show.
Rip both.
There's an interesting documentary about Kurt Cobain that I can recommend called Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck.
ReplyDeleteIt features interviews with Courtney Love and Krist Novoselic amongst others and it certainly explains a lot about Cobain's mental state. After watching it you don't really wonder why he committed suicide but how he lasted so long.
He may have been better off if Smells Like Teen Spirit didn't cross to the mainstream and Nirvana had just been a good underground band instead of being in the glare of publicity.
Agreed. An excellent and very moving documentary indeed.
DeleteA rather fine show this evening so thanks for Anonymous for providing a great copy.
ReplyDeleteA lovely tribute to Freddie at the end (and no credits). A real legend and I love the song as well. The band all knew with that choice of song and video didn't they. So sad.
A couple of students give us a storming version of "Ride Like The Wind" which is a cover, but I never knew that at the time as the original wasn't a hit. I think this is fabulous and a performance full of energy.
Nirvana messing about and having fun. A proper rock n roll performance of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" Never a huge fan but I don't mind this at all.
James up next with a lesser known hit. I like "Sound", I think it's a wonderful indie tune. A good performance as well. 3/3 so far.
I remember this video from George & Elton well. "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me" an average Elton song turned into a great song by the powerful vocals of George Michael. It's watching this I realise how great a vocalist he was. Stunning.
Don't know what/s happening tonight but I really enjoyed this ALTERN-8 performance as well. Even with added Cyberman. A real riot if a performance.
Breakers:
SIMPLY RED - Stars. Great tune, crap video.
SHADES OF RHYTHM - Only duff tune on the show tonight.
DIANA ROSS - When You Tell Me That You Love Me - Enjoy this wonderful tune before Westlife jump onboard with Diana and ruin it.
Jacko still Number One.
And if xxxxxx xxxx doesn't want his episodes shown I won't discuss him.
The original of Ride Like The Wind was the debut single for Christopher Cross in 1980, peaking at No.69 on the UK Chart but was huge in the US, getting to No.2 on the Billboard charts.
DeleteThe only Top 40 hit in the UK for him was a No.7 position in 1981 called Arthur's Theme, and the soundtrack for the Dudley Moore film:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqGWOxu_H4I
Agreed regarding the George & Elton video, and George Michael certainly made this song much more powerful and enjoyable than Elton's solo original in 1974, making a great video together in the process.
Can someone send me a link to download this episode. I've been looking for a while and this was the only place the episode was shared. Thanks
ReplyDelete
