Intermission

There's still no confirmed date yet for Top of the Pops 1990 - all we know is that BBC4 says it will commence sometime during the autumn. So in the meantime I thought I'd whip my old keyboard out and give it another little tinkle for you with a new tune wot I've done. I was hoping to create the soothing sound of sweet dreams with this one, but in the end I just hope it doesn't give you nightmares! 😀

I present Angel Moon

  1. Thanks Angelo - very soothing! I have a feeling that 1990 won't get underway before late September, as there will be a short Proms season from 28 August - 12 September, and that may well dominate Friday nights on BBC4 while it is running.

    1. Yes it is looking increasingly that way, isn't it. And I can't see how they intend to cram the whole of 1990 in before Xmas. Surely that can't be their intention? I'm actually quite looking forward to the 1990's. 90 - 93 were my university days in good old Stratford, east London :-)

    2. Probably Use Thursday Night's As Well As The Abnormal December Schedules i.e Strip Monday To Friday To Finish 1990.

    3. I agree with Angelo. I don't know why everyone is still hooked on this concept of finishing a TOTP year by the end of the calendar year. I know that has been the pattern in the last couple of years, but considering that these repeats have been going on since April 2011 with the 1976 shows onwards, they would finish a year as-and-when, and I'm surprised that people think that BBC4 can transmit a whole TOTP year in the last quarter of 2020.

    4. Ever since the repeats began, BBC4 have scheduled them so that a TOTP year comes to an end at the same time as the current calendar year. I'm sure the original intention was to get through 1990 by Christmas, but as I understand it production of The Story of 1990 was delayed by coronavirus, so the normal "two years in one" pattern has been disrupted. I would imagine BBC4 will be pragmatic about this and let 1990 run on into next year - that would be far preferable to three or even four episodes per week!

    5. As we still don't know how long the crisis will last, I can't imagine they'd speed through 1990 in four months. Anyway, we've just been celebrating Christmas in July so being seasonal doesn't really matter!

  2. The 1980 Runaround repeat this morning featured Jona Lewie with You Will always Find Me In The kitchen At Parties, featuring Kirsty McColl on female vocals.

I didn't know that it was her voice on this track with Lewie, and that she got her first break into the music scene with this group, but these Runaround repeats on Saturday and Sunday mornings are unearthing some fine performances outside of the TOTP ones, where ITV Southern managed to get some of these groups onto their children's TV shows.

It's quite apparent that the children's market was key for record sales in the 70s and early 80s, and probably just as important as the adult market for achieving record sales and ultimately bolstering chart position, so a good performance on kids tv shows were just as important as being invited to TOTP to perform a single.

Suffice to say that that this Runaround performance by Jona Lewie was better than the one he did for the same single on TOTP in 1980. Can't wait to see who's on next week, as these 1978-1980 ITV Southern repeats on Talking Pictures TV at two shows every weekend, have been a great filler while BBC4 is currently on a summer break with the TOTP repeats of 1990.

    1. Kirsty was on the Jona Lewie TOTP performance too (though she had a friend with her then).

Watching Mike Reid fall off the suggestive inflatable was hilarious. I don't know why he bothers asking the winning kid what they want, he should just hand them the portable TV and leave it at that.

Apparently Talking Pictures TV probably shouldn't have shown the 1979 episode with the motorbike sidecar racer, because a couple of years later he hit the headlines for going to his ex's house, shooting her and her new family, then setting himself on fire. They survived, he didn't.

  3. Good stuff, Angelo! Keep 'em coming! I'm on to ask Anonymous if he's got any of the original archive versions of the following shows, all from 1976. They are 6/05, 9/09 and 25/11. Cheers!

    1. That's great news, mate! I'll look forward to seeing what you get. By the way, do you know what's happened to xrayfour? He's on Popscene but he's not been on since early May. He had a spat with Unknown who re-posted several shows that you put up for him and I've not heard from him since. I wondered if you ever message him on Popscene as he swaps shows with people on there. I've not got an account on there so I can't message him myself. Most of the Smithy link shows I've asked you for, he could get me so i'm hoping he'll come back on soon! Thanks again for all the shows you have supplied. Cheers!

  8. This morning's Runaround repeat from 1980 featured a video in place of a studio performance, with none other than Judas Priest with their new single. It's interesting that in June 1980 at the time of this ITV show, BBC1 was on a musician's strike with no TOTP all month, but it seems that this must have affected ITV too, if they could only show a video instead of a studio performance.

The other possibility that Runaround showed the Judas Priest video because their scheduled pop group invited to the studio pulled out at the last minute, hence a video came to the rescue, but it is interesting that Judas Priest for this new single only had ITV exposure, and great that the video was shown in full.

    1. Was that 'Breaking the law' or 'United'? At the time there was a chocolate snack bar around and every time I heard the latter song, I thought about munching my way through one of those...they were delicious!!

    2. 'Breaking The Law', not 'United', but I do remember the United chocolate bar and the TV advert for it. I don't know if it is still going these days in the shops, but it was one of my favourite chocolate bars at the time.

    3. The Breaking the Law video features the band emerging from a sex shop at the start, so obviously, perfect for kids' TV.

The Saturday band were a group singing a funk number about their bald heads, they were called The Headliners which makes them impossible to Google, assuming there's anything online about them at all.

    1. Good Lord, that is amazing news, although I think that the figure of £5000 - £8000 for the lost shows is somewhat generous, and I'm sure it will auction for a lot more.

I would love to see the part-existing show of June 1972 where the Elvis Presley video for An American Trilogy was missing the start of the video, as well as the studio performance just before it to open the show. Bring it on!

  10. I've been trying since Sunday to request several shows but Microsoft have updated Microsoft edge and it keeps saying that Angelo's blog isn't secure and wouldn't publish what i'd written. I've just put on this comment on and it's accepted it. I'd asked for 8/03/84, 31/05/84 and 29/11/84. Then I asked if the elusive 25/05/78 has turned up yet? Cheers!

  15. Just seen this weekend's two Runaround episodes and the two music videos shown in full:

Saturday - One Step Beyond by Madness. Never shown on TOTP because Madness only appeared in the TOTP studio, so I guess ITV was the only channel to show of the video.

Sunday - When I'm With You by The Sparks - never seen this video with the clever ventriloquist work. The single was from their 1980 album Terminal Jive, and it was a pity to spend a budget on a video which does not even make the Top 75 singles chart, but there were likely to be many other examples of this with other groups.

Suffice to say that the Sunday Runaround show saw Mike Reid call one of the child contestants a Wally for getting a question wrong, on where would you find the Great Wall Of China. Good Lord, whatever next?
