ReplyDeleteI prefer the newer link Angelo. It's a little louder at the start but I think better overall than my other attempt. Thanks to Anonymous for the Archive copy without which none of this would have been possible! And he's converted it to mp4 as well which is probably a better format for most.
ReplyDeleteGreat teamwork and great audio fix by xrayfour.
ReplyDeleteI haven't watched this yet, but did think it was unusual tonight's TOTP included the final link's trail of this show, when I'd expect them to edit it out. Are they hoping to do a salvage job of their own next week?
ReplyDeleteThat thought crossed my mind, but there are no changes as yet to next week's BBC4 schedule...
DeleteAlso BBC4 are notably skipping 14/07/1988 on their schedule, we'd are sadly not going to be seeing Eurythmics' 'You Have Placed a Chill in Your Heart' and Simon Bates's final TOTP episode (sadly presumably gone to skip).
DeleteIt seems safe that Andy Crane's TOTP debut from 21/07/1988 does have a full MJ video 'Dirty Diana' and a play-out track from George Michael.
This means BBC4 might be missing out on The Eurythmics' 'You Have Placed a Chill in Your Heart' on the re-runs which does appear on 23/6 and the 14/7 episodes and at least it got an appearance on the Big Hits 1988 compilation noner-of-the-wiser along with a Transvision Vamp clip on The Story of 1988.
We already thought we may be crossed on a full archive, but there are "muted links" in these episodes out there, at least the TOTP fans are trying to best to put the audio mix into the master tape copy from the VHS audio on software applications.
We'll be seeing the other missing TOTP track by Matt Bianco on the 30/06/1988 episode and Enya in the 20/10/1988 episode with 'Orinoco Flow', as for the missing 1989 tracks in UK Gold did cut out were Roachford's 'Cuddly Toy' (19/01/89), The Bangles' 'Be with You' (22/06/89) and Linda Ronstadt & Aaron Neville's 'Don't Know Much' (23/11/89), which are now expected to come in these repeats by next year and as with master tapes of "audio issues" resolving the BBC are skipping two episodes in which feature 'You Have Placed a Chill in Your Heart', at least it does get featured as a breaker on the 16/6/88 episode and Big Hits 1988 has got the performance.
Thanks very much to everyone who has contributed to restoring this episode, much appreciated. The "new boys" get to host this one together, and I have to say Campbell seemed the more relaxed and natural of the two, as well as continuing to tone down his smart-aleck persona. Mark was in an ill-fitting suit again, and still seemed a bit nervous and cheesy in his manner, but definitely growing in confidence all the same, and at least both our hosts seemed very enthusiastic.
ReplyDeleteHaving ended the last show, The Pasadenas kick off this one with a lively studio turn that sees them trying to emulate the Motown dance routines of yore. They certainly manage to name check a host of soul greats, but I don't think that Jimi Hendrix counts myself. In the Air Tonight is back, but I'm not sure we heard the remix here, particularly as we also get the original video. I don't think we ever saw more than a brief snippet of it on the 1981 shows, so it's interesting to get a fuller view now. The stark quality of those full face shots of Phil, and the scenes with him in what looks like an interrogation room, do mesh well with the song and mark it out as one of the more effective of the early videos.
Another old song next, as UB40 and Chrissie reunite to take on their second 60s classic. They do a better job of this than they made of I Got You Babe, despite Ali's rather strained falsetto, but it's not a patch on Dusty's version, and they all look a bit crammed in on that small stage. There's more from all the breakers to come, so we now come to the highlight of the show for me, an excellent live version of one of the best of Annie and Dave's late singles, and their last Top 20 placing from their original run of hits prior to the first split in 1990. While it would have been nice to have heard the compelling original recording in full, this stripped back version works very well in its own right, and Annie is in great voice.
The Twist is such an enduring record that even swamped by The Fat Boys' shouty rapping and some naff new lyrics it still sounds good. On the evidence of the colourful video Chubby, sporting a weird hairstyle combining an afro with dreads, was greatly enjoying this chance to return to the limelight after a quarter of a century. At least TOTP manged to spell his name correctly this week...
Regarding Phil Collins....no we never saw the full video, just the snippets in the top10 rundown when they used to show clips. Instead, they featured Phil's 'paint pot' studio renditions. Incidentally, I don't know what the remix here was supposed to sound like, but this soundtrack is the original 7" version which was slightly different to the 'Face Value' album version in that it had extra drum beats added, which I always thought sounded better.
DeleteJust wondering why this tune was re-released in 1988, some 7 years after the original release, regardless of the fact that it was a remix on re-release in 1988? Was there a TV ad at this juncture that used this tune?
DeleteI'm not sure why this remix happened at this time, but it may have been a record company stop-gap measure to keep Phil's name in the charts while they waited for new material to become available.
DeleteUnfortunately, I'm unable to download Robert Thompson's file while the newer version plays with no sound.
ReplyDeleteHopefully, the BBC now intends to screen this edition next week as it usually edits the closing link when a show is missing (plus this was a live programme as well so would like to have seen it).
link at top of this post is fine i've just downloaded it
DeleteI've tested it on VLC media player, Power DVD for Lenovo, Microsoft's Film & TV player, Quick player and an LG Smart TV. It's playing perfectly on all of them. Not tried it on a Smartphone though. Please use Angelo's "newer link" as it's a better copy if anyone wants to download it.
Deletexrayfour - I'm attempting to view from an iPad; never encountered an issue before but have just tried again and the earlier glitches I reported persist.
DeleteThat's strange. I always use an Audio Codec called "AAC(Lav)". Perhaps your iPad does not recognize it. I've uploaded the show again with a small adjustment to the mp4 audio output. I've also included the original mkv file. You could also try downloading the 1983 restorations below & if everything is silent then it looks like a codec problem. If so & you can find out which audio codecs your iPad will recognize I may be able to convert the show for you. All this will be futile of course if BBC4 come up with thier own restoration but I doubt it. Here's the link
Deletehttps://we.tl/t-vIyKwA5hb1
Stop press! We may get the show on BBC4 now as it looks like they may have found a decent copy somewhere.
Deletexrayfour - Thank you so much. I entered the link and was able to watch the first restored version.
DeleteBelieve it or not, although this show is from late June, it was the first live Top of The Pops of 1988 and, if you listen carefully at the start of the opening titles, you can actually hear the producer say 'On the Air'.
Of the three acts who appeared live, the studio direction on this show was also much better than we have seen in recent months.
I've listened very carefully but can't hear 'On The Air'! I've got tinnitus though which affects my hearing.
DeleteI've just listened to it again and he says it at 0:01.
Deletepasadenas: reviving the memory of black american (usually all-male) soul vocal acts such as the stylistics and the detroit spinners (with one doing all the lead singing while the rest were throwing shapes most of the time), that littered 70's editions of these shows. strangely enough to my recollection the shape-throwing daddies the temptations have never appeared in these re-runs since they started - not even when they had a brief revival circa 1984 with the excellent "treat her like a lady" (which this track sounds fairly similar to, but not as good - the best bit is when the drums kick-in in the intro). i think i'm right that (as a british act) this record was produced by peter sutcliffe - sorry, pete wingfield of olympic runners fame
ReplyDeletePete 'Eighteen with a Bullet' Wingfield....yes indeed, he produced and co-wrote.
DeleteIf you're out there Brie, I've now got the 4 shows you were looking for. Drykid did restore 28/04/83 & 08/06/83 as avi files. I've modified them slightly & converted them to mp4. Here they are:
ReplyDeletehttps://we.tl/t-Shhj2NSjon
I've also got 19/01/84 & 17/05/84 from Neil. Will try to restore the missing links with drykid soon.
Fantastic news, xrayfour! Thanks a million for these! I thought we'd never get them!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the two 1983 restorations, superb work.
ReplyDeleteThanks mate! Most of the credit here to drykid though. I will work with him on the other restorations this week.
DeleteThanks for the restorations. Not sure if I was meant to be hearing the links – all I could hear was background music, but no matter, the music was loud and clear, and some of it quite good.
ReplyDeletePasadenas – Tribute (right on) – The sound dropped off on this thanks goodness!
Phil Collins – In the Air Tonight – Sheer class. One of those ‘should have got to no1’ records to counter the likes of S’Express etc. Timeless. Not sure what prompted the remix (very minor differences actually) and reissue though but it’s not unworthy. So the story goes that Phil did think he played this to the rest of Genesis in the ‘Duke’ sessions but Tony swears blind he didn’t, and hence Phil went ahead and used it on his solo stuff.
UB40 / Chrissie Hynde – Breakfast in Bed – I looked this up on 45cat and found a comment by Tony Moss that I really couldn’t have put better myself, so I make no apology for quoting Tony here; “Thought this effort was more tolerable that their nauseating version of 'I Got You Babe' which is never a million miles away on commercial radio stations, yet you rarely hear this one”.
Breakers – Tracy ‘so overrated’ Chapman – No comment, just don’t get this at all and wouldn’t term her ‘brilliant’ at all. Sorry I know a lot of people think this is bloomin’ wonderful. Communards – Bye bye and goodnight guys. Salt n’ Pepa – I should absolutely hate this, but I don’t! Love the riff which we didn’t hear on this clip. Much prefer this to their other no2 hit which we won’t talk about. Bruce Springsteen – pleasant track which I don’t recall.
Maxi Priest – Wild World – Welcome repeat of a Cat Stevens classic strangely not released as a single by the man himself.
Eurythmics – You have placed a chill in my heart – This is a treat actually. A nice live and stripped down version of a song that didn’t sound that good on the breakers last week. Well worth a viewing.
Bros – I owe you nothing – Nothing to say really other than the ‘Five Doctors’ time scoop effect is in evidence near the end.
Fat Boys / Chubby Checker – The Twist – Haha…is this meant to be taken seriously? Not as bad as that Beach Boys collaboration admittedly.
The Fat Boys here bringing out Chubby Checker from the wilderness, did the same for the Beach boys a year before with Wipeout on their collaboration with them, and it was a nice gesture by a relatively unknown group in the 80s, ie, The Fat Boys, to think of these 60s icons and ask them to collaborate on their single.
DeleteIn the years before Utube, there is quite a good Fat Boys VHS tape that was released at the time with all their videos which were essentially in the 1987-1988 period, and all the videos had amazing American girls on them, either in bikinis or some similar attire, so definitely worth watching.
A few weeks ago I mentioned my admiration of Christine McVie. Last week BBC4 had a programme about her, Fleetwood Mac Songbird. Worth a listen.
ReplyDeleteI watched that too. While I am not Christine M's biggest fan, it was nevertheless interesting to get her take on her time in Fleetwood Mac, as we have heard much less from her in the past than from other band members.
DeleteYes, we mostly get Mick Fleetwood's words and comments in documentaries in the later years and present day, as the other members don't seem to contribute to interviews.
DeleteBig thanks to xrayfour and Robert Thompson for doing what the incompitents at the BBC can't, won't or couldn't. Unfortunately, the file keeps crashing when I try to download it on my new PC which is acting like my old steam-driven machine, so I'll have to pass on this edition.
ReplyDeleteThere's a few links knocking around now Arthur! Have you tried this one:
Deletehttps://we.tl/t-vIyKwA5hb1
Its also on Google Drive now here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1tqo6Bkh77TTu2Ux-7JyLpe9wUzSGlVR9/view?fbclid=IwAR1yzgFLpJbjjxkYVb7v24uDmVLBlruEi8H4YMjKTtG6ht8qJfu4q1mxN40
DeleteI was holding out to see if BBC4 would show this one after all, but there's no mention of it in their schedules, so I'll have a quick run through anyway (and thanks to the reconstructers - if that's a word).
ReplyDeletePasadenas, not from Pasadena, and apparently their fantastic dancing includes punk rock pogo. I think even I could have managed that.
Phil Collins with his dreary hit mysteriously revived from earlier in the 80s, wasn't interested back then, was even less interested in '88.
The honeyed tones of Dusty Springfield remain one of the slinkiest vocals ever heard on a 60s hit - this cover is the reggae equivalent of chicken in a basket pub band. Rice and pea in a basket?
Maxi Priest we've seen (great choice for a live show! Ahem) and then the audience either awed into silence or terrified into shutting up by Annie and Dave. Certainly one of their better singles, but a bit stark and unlovable, especially acoustically.
Then, because it's a live show, the No.1 is also on tape. Great choice again. Ahem again.
Fat Boys and the Chubster to end on, ripping off The Beastie Boys' Fight for Your Right video and putting their crowdpleasing spin on a bit of novelty tat from decades before, apparently united because they were all obese. About as good as you'd expect.
You're allowed to say fat. It seems present-day that the word fat has got lost to the newer word obese
DeleteI prefer the word "chubbington".
DeleteHi Angelo, I quite like the Google Drive. I'm surprised to see you call it a dive on the link at the top of the page!
ReplyDeleteWelcome to the dive ~ a one, a two, a one, two, three! :-)
DeleteFirstly a BIG thank you to everyone that put this together for is to watch. Much appreciated.
ReplyDeleteNicky has settled into the presenters role quite well but Mark Goodier is still a complete natural for Radio, stiff as a board and in a suit that's about 10 sizes too big for him. Maybe he got it for his birthday 2 weeks ago (same day as me!)
Take a bow The Pasadenas - ELEVEN people on stage, we have a new record for the year. A great performance, loved the bomber jackets and thought this was a great way to open the show.
No mention that this Phil Collins song was on it's second outing. I'd honestly have to put them back to back to tell the difference. Nice video though. Phil about to enter his "movie" stage with Buster coming up later in the year.
UB40 & Chrissie Hynde's previous effort made number One but they couldn't make it to the studio that time. Tonight they turn up with a possee of TEN - any other week that would have been enough but not tonight! This must have crept slowly up the charts as I'd forgotten it was even still in the chart until it appeared. Nice enough I suppose.
Breakers:
Tracy Chapman – There is something about this song that makes me shudder. I found it really creepy as a 14 year old and even now it makes me feel uncomfortable. No idea why, just can't listen to it.
The Communards go out with a bang. Very nice pop song and a playful video as well.
Salt ‘N’ Pepa. Push It/Tramp (do we ever get the other side of this one?) Superb. Loved it then, love it now. Such a great record. One of the sounds of the summer of 88.
Bruce Springsteen. Never been a fan and this is another of his "they all sound the same" AOR rock.
Maxi Priest may be singing live but only 7 on stage mate will not cut it tonight. Nicky trying to convince us he was "live" in the studio - hmm No.
You Have truly Placed A Chill In My Heart Eurythmics. WHAT A PERFORMANCE. Highlight of the show and possibly the year. Superb!
Bros get the number one they deserve.
The Fat Boys & Chubby Checker do The Twist. I knew the original as it was one of my Mums 7" singles that we used to play whilst she did the ironing. Unlike the appalling "Wipeout" last year this is really good and a great party record.
Were the credits missing because of the restoration or was this missed at the time? Intrigued!
A great show - one of the best of the year by a long way.
Buster wasn't Phil's first film role - he had also starred in Calamity the Cow for the Children's Film Foundation 20 years earlier!
DeleteHow an earth did I forget that John! :-)
DeleteHe was also in the Hard Days Night film as an extra.
Deleteam i right in recalling phil also played the artful dodger in a mid-60's london stage production of "oliver!" prior to starting his rock career?
DeleteYou're right, he did, he was a friend of Jack Wild who is more famous for playing The Artful Dodger in the film.
DeleteMany thanks to the technical wizards who put this show on the road for us. The version I heard had muddy sound occasionally but, surely, this would still have been good enough for national consumption.
ReplyDelete“Anything could happen” says Mark. Yes, like the BBC fukcing up big time and ballsing up yet another recording of theirs and causing us to miss yet ANOTHER edition on terrestrial. They never screw up with “The Sky At Night”, do they? Another reason why I resent paying the licence fee (and don’t get me started on them axeing the red button text options next spring).
Eat that, Stylistics! The Pasadenas giving it some, much better ‘live’ than on video, and extra points for the backing band in American college jackets with a “P” motif. Doesn’t take much, you see?
“In The Air” is on the air, a clever link by Nicky for one of the most boring videos ever. Where was the drumming gorilla, then? And no, I don’t mean Phil.
An unusual right angle leg pose for Carol Decker there in the mugshots.
“Dry your tears on my dress”, Chrissie? Since when have we ever seen you in anything other than trousers? Ali Campbell channelling his inner Mariah Carey there.
Break out the black lightbulb and Wilkinson Sword, it's Tracy Chapman with a song that makes Morrissey sound like Black Lace.
Ah, something fun now, thank goodness.A simple but fun-looking vid for The Communards, with The Rev without his glasses shock horror and another ‘woman singing Jimmy’s part’ snatch like their big number one.
“With the music pumping hard like I wish you would”? “Push it real good”? Any idea what Salt ‘n’ Pepa are on about? Good to see their DJ mate Spinderella made the mugshot.
A Brooooce ballad by numbers next, slower and more boring than the rest.
Interesting to see Morrissey and Kylie doing mirror right angle arm salutes side by side in the mugshots.
Eurythmics with a wonderful live version there. All About Eve are at home watching for tips when it's their turn. Ahem. “Chill” in the song title? Ramp up the dry ice then!
DesEEREless in the top then there, Maaark?
Poor old Chubby gets no outro mention for this harmless cartoon rap effort. Shame Tanita Tikaram didn’t run with it for “Let’s Twist In My Sobriety Again Like We Did Last Summer”.
We could do with July 14th 1988 if anybody has a link? :-)
ReplyDeleteThis is my upscaled version of what I think is Acer Ben's copy of 14/07/88. It's an mkv file but I can also do an mp4 if required:
Deletehttps://we.tl/t-nyYPg6pOWm
That's brilliant, thank you xrayfour. Yes, if you could do an mp4 version that would be terrific :-)
DeleteMp4 link for 14/08/88 is posted on the 07/07/88 show for convenience or is it confusion? Anyway it's there now!
DeleteExtremely late to the party on this one, most of which I whizzed through anyway.
ReplyDeletePhil Collins - The remix is very slight, just a few extra drum parts I think. So no surprise that the video seems to be the original.
UB40 / Chrissie Hynde - Count me as another who finds this less awful than their other team-up but also nowhere near as good as Dusty's version.
Eurythmics - The best thing on the show by some distance, and it seems that some thought was (for once) given to BBC4 viewers by including it in the Big Hits compilation so we could get to see it.
The Fat Boys - Utterly dreadful.
