Going to a Go-Go
14/01/88 (Gary Davies & Simon Mayo)
Climie Fisher – “Rise To The Occasion” (10)
Getting tonight's show underway but this song could rise no further.
Tiffany – “I Think We’re Alone Now” (13) (US TOTP clip)
With her live vocal studio rendition of the song that will be number one in three weeks time.
Krush – “House Arrest” (3)
Their second appearance in the studio but the record was now at its peak.
Morris Minor & The Majors – “Stutter Rap (No Sleep Til Bedtime)” (4) (rpt from 31/12/87)
Also thankfully at its peak.
The Christians – “Ideal World” (22) (breaker)
On their way to number 14.
AC/DC – “Heatseeker” (17) (breaker)
Became their biggest hit when it peaked at number 12.
Terence Trent D’Arby – “Sign Your Name” (8)
In the studio again to perform what became his biggest hit, but also his third and final top ten hit, peaking at number 2.
Belinda Carlisle – “Heaven Is A Place On Earth” (1) (US TOTP clip)
Another live vocal from LA, and Belinda's first of two weeks at number one.
George Michael – “Father Figure” (11) (video/credits)
At its peak.
21st January is next.
Gazza and Mayo make an engaging and likeable presenting duo for a show that contains very little we haven't heard before. At least Simon Climie covers up for this return performance, even if there he has nothing on beneath his leather jacket. There's some fun interaction between him and his musical partner, but the song still feels like an awkward hybrid to me. Over to TOTP USA for Tiffany, beginning her short chart career with the only song of hers anybody remembers. As has already been mentioned on this blog, this was another cover of a Tommy James and the Shondells hit, and while it is tuneful enough I have never cared for Tiff's nasal vocals. This performance does show her to have decent stage presence - though I was unconvinced by the dancing - and she does engage the audience.
ReplyDeleteKrush are back, and while I still think the singer's "street" look is risible the gimmick of having the audience members shine torches from the back of the stage works well and gives the performance some atmosphere. More of the breakers next time, so onward to a restrained TTD, as befits this excellent ballad, one of the best tracks on Introducing the Hardline - I particularly like that sinuous Arabian Nights-style keyboard melody. No one could have believed at the time how rapidly the future Sananda Maitreya would fall from grace after this, though his career would recover sufficiently from that disastrous second album to yield a few more Top 20 hits in the early 90s. George to finish, with a moody video and a lovely gospel-tinged track which is up there as one of his best solo moments, even if the lyrics come over as a bit dodgy these days. Shame this got faded out so quickly.
I played Rise To The Occasion on my radio show a couple of weeks back after the first TOTP appearance but the version on the playout was a ballad without all the drum machine clatter. I was really impressed, but I guess the record buying public wasn't hence the remix.
DeleteI wasn't surprised to discover that it was a ballad originally - it just sounds silly with all that house-style production.
DeleteOn holiday this week so won't be doing a full critique. Just to observe that my favourite Tiffany track is the follow up 'Could've been'.
ReplyDeletegeorge michael: more earnest dullness from him - andrew ridgeley may not have brought much to the wham! table musically, but it seems if nothing else he supplied the joie de vivre. i wonder how many teenage girls listened to this fantasising about the now seriously stubbled george being their own father figure? i also wonder if george wrote it not from his own perspective, but from that of an older male lover of his?
ReplyDeleteClunky Fisher back for a repeat-filled show, only here instead of miming their samples they're acting them out. This was such a blatant grab at the zeitgeist that it irked me at the time, and you know what? It still irks me!
ReplyDeleteCouldn't stand Tiffany back then, possibly because I don't even like the original of I Think We're Alone Now, and this parpy synth version of it did nothing for me. Embarrassed to note, she may have been a bouncy performer, but she was a lot bouncier than she should have been - remember your underwear next time, Tiff.
Krush back too, with Ruth wearing as many clothes as she possibly could. Interesting, barely lit approach to the staging, makes it stand out a little more. This would still be a very respectable pop record even without the bits and pieces.
Joke's wearing a bit thin, Morris, so onto Terence with a moody number for 80s dinner parties everywhere. Be honest - can you hear a xylophone on this track? At least Tel can wear a pair of fashionably distressed denims better than Simon Climie.
Belinda reaches the top, no problem with that, though I am reminded of the bit in the doc In Bed with Madonna where the backing singers emulate her vibrato by one hammering on the other's back while she sings this. Funny the things...
Then a snippet of George to end on, moving well into his "I want you to take me very seriously" phase. We can tell he's serious because he puts the word "naked" in the lyrics - ooh, George, you're so grown up now! Video sees him doing his best Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver (er, without the extreme violence).
it was a very close call on this week's show, as to who was the prettiest between Tiffany, Belinda Carlisle and Ruth Oram (lead singer on Krush), but I would say that Tiffany wins it by a whisker, but definitely some nice hotties performing on this week's show.
DeleteMust admit I never got the appeal of Tiffany, she might as well have been an unexceptional teenager doing karaoke for all I cared. Oh, that's exactly what she was, wasn't she? We still have her Beatles abomination on the way too!
Deletetiffany seems/seemed to be the american equivalent of toyah i.e. determined to become successful in showbiz despite a lack of any obvious talent. and like ms wilcox, she also had a stab at acting as well as being a pop star
DeleteGiven his late in life propensity for showing up in shopping centres to sing and sell cassettes of his singing, Don Estelle could be said to be Britain's Tiffany.
DeleteAnother great episode of Yacht Rock on BBC 4 last night, those Toto guys were excellent value and obviously delighted to be able to deliver their anecdotes (never thought of Thriller as a Toto album, must admit). Nice to see Jeffrey Osborne too, what a nice man. And now we know where the term "Yacht Rock" came from - videos on the internet. Quelle surprise.
ReplyDeleteSad to hear on BBC 6 Music's Huey Morgan show just there that Phil Lynott's mother Philomena has died. She did a lot to keep her son's memory alive.

ReplyDeleteAs we are not going to be seeing the Krush video, thanks to two TOTP studio performances during its rise up the charts, I thought I would check it out, and I must say I really liked it, especially the cutie on lead vocals on the video:
ReplyDeletehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7mYuHAhDoI
The two main statements on the record are "Bug On Out" and " The Beat Is The law", which were recurring captions during the video. Anyone know what Bug On Out is referring to, as I haven't got a clue!
Lots of repeats on this one, though this Climie Fisher performance with the ridiculous acting out of 'Dddddon't touch that!' is the one I remember.
ReplyDeleteTiffany - Oh dear. The song itself is OK, though not worthy of the regular airplay it still gets. Sadly, this clip proves that she couldn't sing live to save her life. Future caterwauling to come will back this up.
Krush - I too really like the flashing torches - this is a sign of Paul Ciani trying to freshen things up a bit. Ruth's really not a good mover though, is she?!
TTD - A good, slinky song, thankfully not spoilt by those 2 gruesome backing singers having some proper clothes on.
George Michael - A real fan favourite, but although I like his music, I've always found this one very, very boring.
The flashing torches were a copycat of the video where it was the main theme, ie the house being under arrest with flashing torches from the start. The torch concept did look good also in the TOTP studio on this performance.
DeleteThe George Michael video in its fullness is around five-and-a-half minutes long, and I suspect that it was on the whole a bit too racey for early evening viewing, where we only got about one-and-a-half minutes of it. I expect there was no chance of George appearing in the TOTP studio at this later stage of his solo career, so I guess in these pre-music channels era, we had to make do with whatever we could get on the regular terrestrial channels, which I guess was not very much in this case.
Mid Jan TOTP with Ooh Gary and the Boy Mayo
ReplyDeleteCF back again with their hip version of Rise. Still think the original is better. I see patches on jeans are now in again. 88 was very Denim outside of school I recall
Shopping centres Simon. They are Malls... Tiff was a major news story at the time with her shopping tours. Nice live vocal on the US TOTP. And she's not in jeans and baggy t-shirt. Wow.
Song is very good too. Got a bit overplayed and lots it's appeal over the years so has lost some of its shine. Sounds really good here in context.
Krush! Number 3! Been playing this non stop for 2 weeks and annoying Wifey. Love it. She can't mime though 😂😂😂
Loads of new entries this week. Crikey.
Morris Minor back again. Once was enough. FF
Breakers :
Christians. Forgotten about this. Great song actually. Why doesn't this get more radio play. One for the playlist
ACDC. Hmmmm. NEXT.. Can anyone tell me what the appeal of this lot was.
TTD. Beautiful song. Easily the best single he released. Great voice. Such a shame we he couldn't follow his first album up. A real talent.
Belinda hits the top and gives us our first new number one of the year. What a corker it is to. One of the great 80s pop tunes. Belinda went on to have loads of hits and I had a few of her albums. Definitely a fan. 😀
George on play out. One of his black and white arty farty videos.
VERY Top Ten heavy show this week. Were all the new entries not available. Odd choices this week. Hopefully 21st Jan will have more new stuff.
I remember trying to get 6 to 8 episodes into a fortnight.. Now it's one a fortnight. 😀
I wonder what the weather was like in January '88? If it was snowy, maybe new artists couldn't get to the studio, hence all these repeat appearances this episode.
DeleteQuite the opposite, actually. The year started mild with a mean temperature of 6 degrees, unsettled and windy with some heavy fog in the southeast. It stayed pretty damp and mild through until the spring, dipping into a few snow showers at the end of February and into March, but the overall season was pretty uneventful.
Deletemorgie lots of shops enclosed under one roof were known as shopping centres back then. there was then a fad for calling them shopping precincts, but as part of the ongoing americanisation (sorry, americaniZation) of this country, they are now referred to as malls
DeleteI remember well that winter being unusually mild, as my parents had bought sledges for me and my sister in anticipation of snow, as we had had a series of snowy winters in the previous few years. We did get to use the sledges eventually, but not until 1991!
DeleteBack then we had just moved from Shropshire and most shopping visits were done in the (then) extremely new and sparkly Telford shopping centre. I always believed (with admittedly no evidence whatsoever to back it up) that the indoor versions were the 'shopping centres' and the outdoor collectives were the 'shopping precincts' but, yes, they're all F'ing 'Malls' now - cheers for that, Uncle Sam ...
DeleteAnd they're now pronounced "mauls" instead of "mahls" too! Unless you're Trooping the Colour.
DeleteMorgie - I remember denim being big around 1988. We will also soon be entering the era of the dreaded (and highly flammable) shell suit...
ReplyDeleteYou will doubtless be delighted to know that, after no shows whatsoever this week, we will have five to contend with next week - BBC4 will be showing three rather than the normal two, and there will be two consecutive Smiffed shows to fit in as well!
Crickey, you'd think they would have fitted in at least one show this week, instead of three shows on BBC4 next week. It's just as well that we get a complete break this week.
DeleteOh god. I'll prepare myself for the onslaught
DeleteI agree with Morgie. Strong cider and Bristol Cream at the ready, and let's have it. At least we'll be rid of Shitty soon, though not soon enough in my eyes. Still, we've got Anthea Turner to look forward to (ahem)....
DeleteThe women's World Cup is to blame for this situation, as it has displaced TOTP from a lot of its normal slots and BBC4 are therefore playing catch-up next week. This should at least be the final "marathon" we face, with Smitty's departure now very close.
DeleteBoth quarter finals now moved to BBC1, but no TOTP 88 on BBC4 Thurs or Fri. Instead 90 minutes of Big Hits 64-75 at 7.30pm on Friday.
DeletePity the next one wasn't a Smithy edition which would've plugged the gap!
That is annoying - I guess BBC4 didn't want to reschedule the repeats at the last minute in case people complained they had missed them as a result!
DeleteLate to the party, but no (k)rush this week anyway.
ReplyDeleteGaz in an eye-throbbing top, giving away the number one early doors as Belinda was number 2 the previous week. Boo!
Slimie Fisher back with their awful synthy sample-riddled row. Next!
Cannock Chase’s best known current resident next (yes, seriously), yet to give us the six foot long jumper or L-shaped hand dance, but giving us a dreadfully out of key first few bars. If she’d been touring over here the equivalent would have been on the concourse of your local Kwiksave. I hated Tiffany’s vocal delay to “anyone around” in the choruses but loved the raspy way she sang “night”. Anyone looking for another version of this song would do worse than check out The Rubinoos, label mates of Jonathan Richman.
Nice impersonation of that doubled sample, Gaz. Dig it!!
10p needed in the meter, it’s Krush with an atmospheric setting, though I was half expecting whistles and klaxons in the audience. You shone very briefly but brightly, folks. Bye and thanks, Ruth.
Oh God, Bros in the mugshots. Brace! Oo, Dollar are back! Simon missing out the second half of at least three collaborations in that rundown. Slapped legs that man.
Morris Minor et al. FFS, F-f-f-f-FF.
In an ideal world (see what I did there?) The Christians’ most melodic song would have charted higher. Shame they were such surly bastards offstage, mind.
A nice gentle ballad there from Andy Capp and AC/DC. Oh, hang on...
Talking of shining brightly but briefly (until his return with a handful of top 20 hits some years later), who’d have thought Terry Darby would be out of sight so soon after a stellar year? No vocal mics for anyone, not even Tribute Pete Cox and Paul Simon, but a full-on mimed effort there by Tel for a sumptuous ballad so well played, sir.
Belinda there, obviously not allowed to mime on US TOP OF THE POPS™ with a wonderful upbeat drive-time anthem. Listen and learn, Tiff.
Nodding Dog, trendy? Were you pi$$ed there, young Mayo?
And we finish with Andrew Ridgeley’s slightly more successful half with the sort of song I’d relate to as the ‘end of album slowie let down’.
Your mention of Tiffany living in Cannock Chase reminds me that a few years ago Lisa-Marie Presley was living in East Sussex with her (now ex) husband and spending her spare time selling fish and chips from a mobile van, as you do. There's a girl works down the chip shop says she's Elvis' daughter...
DeleteBoom boom tish! :-D
DeleteI've just watched this show on BBC iPlayer and found it a somewhat mediocre edition with little new showcased as others have already referenced.
ReplyDeleteI can't help but feel that perhaps Paul Ciani missed something of an opportunity to restore more of a party atmosphere to Top of The Pops on his arrival instead of continuing with the sombre lighting and sets, and reinstate the audience credits rather than a video playout.
By this time, although an accomplished host, Gary Davies was perhaps too much of an omnipresent and, following Michael Hurll's departure at the end of February, although still well-used, his appearances will ultimately become less frequent.
Gazza continues to appear frequently for the next few weeks because TOTP USA was still on air at this point. Once it comes to an end in March, we will start to see a bit less of him.
DeleteJohn G - Yes, I agree that TOTP's failure to make an impact stateside ((for which Gary Davies was resident UK contributor) and cancellation of the US version in 1988 was definitely a factor, however both Davies and Mike Smith were clearly Hurll's presenters of choice, hence their overuse, therefore his departure is likely to have played a role also.
DeleteIt's possible Hurll's departure was another factor, as he had been using Davies a lot even before the US show started, but it was after it started that he really became omnipresent. Paul Ciani evidently liked him too, as even after March '88 he still presented the show on average at least once a month right down to the Year Zero revamp in 1991.
DeleteBBC4 seem to be skipping the 25th Feb edition which was the first one hosted by Mark Goodier. Surely not another Mike Smith situation happening?
ReplyDeletePopscene is suggesting that Morrissey might be the issue due to recent comments on racism.
DeleteIf Mozza is the problem, presumably on account of some racist things he has been saying recently, then it's yet another example of the Beeb spinelessly rewriting history to appease current sensibilities. In any case, surely they could just edit him out? On the face of it, seems unlikely Mark Goodier would have anything to do with the decision, given he is one of the most bland and inoffensive DJs around!
DeleteI'm sure I heard Morrissey being played on radio 2 the other day anyway - I think maybe there is a technical problem with the edition, or it is a scheduling cock-up which hopefully will be rectified.
DeleteI hope it's one of those two reasons you've given, Angelo. Frankly, I'm getting absolutely fcuked off with editions being cut - as soon as you get over one problem (Savile, DLT, Shitty) another one appears and yet more shows get chopped from the schedule. As an aside, I wonder what the artistes feel if they're being paid / expecting repeat fees, only for their appearance(s) and chance of remuneration disappearing through no fault of theirs?
DeleteMark Goodier has confirmed on Twitter that it is definitely not his doing - so hopefully his other editions should be ok.
DeleteThanks Angelo - that's something, at any rate!
DeleteAll might not be lost re 25/2. It could still be shown is the latest update.
ReplyDeleteAccording to BBC Four head honcho “records say 25/2 not transmittable but they’re double checking”.
ReplyDeleteAll sorted now. 25/2 will be broadcast. It’s possible they thought it was a “Smithed” edition and hence not transmittable by mistake.
ReplyDeleteThanks for that. I did wonder if it might be a mistake, because there did not seem to be a good enough reason not to show it.
DeletePhew! Thank goodness for that. I can climb off my soapbox now....
DeleteIt's now been scheduled for Thursday 11th July :-)
