Swing it, shake it, move it, make it the 14th of March 1997 edition of Top of the Pops!
Have a spice day
14-3-97: Presenter: Ian Broudie
(11) MONACO – What Do You Want From Me?
Getting the show underway but it got no higher.
(10) ANT & DEC – Shout
Here with their third of six top ten hits but it got no higher.
(6) KULA SHAKER – Hush (video) (and charts)
Should have been featured last week when it peaked at number 2.
(20) 3 COLOURS RED – Sixty Mile Smile
With their second of six top 40 hits, but it got no higher.
(4) SASH! – Encore Une Fois
A second studio performance for a tune that had already peaked at number 2.
(12) ALISHA’S ATTIC – Indestructible (video)
At its peak.
(9) NO MERCY – Where Do You Go
Had already peaked at number 2.
(19) DODGY – Found You
Here with their eighth and penultimate top 40 hit, but it got no higher.
(1) SPICE GIRLS – Who Do You Think You Are
First of three weeks at number one with this double A side with Mama, and it was also this year's Comic Relief song.
(3) FUGEES – Rumble In The Jungle (video) (and credits)
Their fourth and final top ten hit but it got no higher.
Sash! - another play at No.4 when previously played at No.2, but although it went down to No.4 the previous week, it was a non-mover at this lower position this week, so you could say they warranted another play, especially as they were only on once before when as a new entry at No.2.
ReplyDeletePlayout single - the return of the playout single you could say, with this week's new entry at No.3, The Fugees with a celebration of the famous boxing Rumble In The Jungle in the 70s, and I noticed the sampling of Abba's The Name Of The Game which seems to stand out more than the boxing nostalgia.

Thanks Rob!!!
DeleteCheers Rob and thanks for the bonus Elvis episode!
DeleteInteresting, the two March '97 TOTP2 episodes were the final ones presented by Johnnie Walker, and the August '97 Elvis Special was the first TOTP2 to be hosted by Steve Wright, so these three episodes (thanks Rob) sees the handing over of the baton to Steve Wright.
DeleteTo Wright's credit, he does carry over the Johnnie Walker style of presenting (for now), with the same graphics and categories, like The Video Stir, The Video Classic, The First Time, One Hit Wonders, Archive Playout, but for how long, as I only recall Wright introducing the shows without the Walker inspired categories on the show, and instead as a greatest hits pick and mix over the coming years.
No doubt we will find out soon when the presenting style was to change, when the next TOTP2 shows will be put up (thanks Rob) alongside the Sep 1997 TOTP repeats coming soon on BBC4 in the next few months.

DeleteForgot to mention, on the Aug '97 TOTP2 Elvis Special, Steve Wright put in a joke about Dodi Fayed at the end of the Fine Young Cannibals song, without any knowledge of what would happen in France only two weeks later.
Rob if you wouldn't mind could you post 27/12/97 totp2 please?
DeleteGreat seeing Sash. One of the best dance tracks from 1997.
ReplyDeleteSome great energetic songs on this episode. Monaco and Kula Shaker being my favorites. Hadn't heard those 2 for a long time.
