DeleteIn The First Time section, Dexys Midnight Runners first time on TOTP was a single called Dance Stance in January 1980, and although I watched TOTP every week in 1980, this one passed my by, as they were just a new group invited in to TOTP and peaked at No.40 with their first single, and it was only after their second single Geno got to No.1 in May of that year, that there was an interest in their other singles from their first album.
DeleteDance Stance doesn't seem to have a video for it, but in those days, upcoming new groups would have to work their way in with some success before being given a video for their single.
The Video Stir featured the first single from a new French duo called Daft Punk, and I remember this because of its weird sound, and eventually peaked at No.7 in April 1997. By 1997 you could of course have a video for your first single, even before knowing how successful the single would be. Totally different climate.
In the One Hit Wonder section, The Lotus Eaters were featured with The First Picture Of You, and never knew there was a video for it until finding it today on iTunes for a quality purchase at £1.89.
Just love Michelle Gayle's gorgeous outfits whenever she's on TOTP. It's that well endowed chest that so noticeable. Good Lord, definitely worth a new entry at No.6 this week.
ReplyDeleteIt's great to see 70's and 80's stalwarts like Barbara Streisand at No.10 with the chart rundown video, and David Bowie at No.14, both with new entries this week with new singles and new material, when the majority of that generation had stopped by 1995 to leave the singles charts to the next generation.
808 State were also a new entry this week at No.20 on the chart rundown with a strange single called Lopez, which was essentially their final new single, albeit there were a couple of remixed singles releases in 1998 and 1999 of their early 90's classics, but here in 1997 with Lopez, it was pretty much their last throw of the dice in a 8-year run from late 1989 with their debut single Pacific which peaked at No.10.
En Vogue - great to see the video again, after first being shown as the chart rundown video a couple of shows ago, I could watch this video several times over with the girls looking oh so classy, and also as this was their highest chart position since 1992, when My Lovin' got to No.4 that year.
