Great 1975 episode this one, and I'm pleased that BBC4 have stopped editing these episodes down to 30 minutes, so that we can see them in all their glory.
DeleteLoved the Rod Stewart video at No.2, and the Stylistics video at No.1, and what a performance by Pans People to dance to an Eagles masterpiece called One Of These Nights.
DeleteI was watching with subtitles. Much amused to see the line in Motorbikin ‘looking like street lighting’.. 😀
Good version of Waterloo Sunset from 1997. Still to watch 1975 one.
ReplyDeleteLooks like the new Cathy Dennis single coincided with the 30th Anniversary of the original by The Kinks which reached No.2 in May 1967. She certainly moved from heavy dance sound in 1989 to a more gentle 60's sound with a sexy 90's look in 1997.
DeleteDefinitely. She made some great records. Loved her debut in 1989 with D-Mob.

ReplyDeleteThanks Rob!!!
DeleteAs ever, thanks Rob.
DeleteI always appreciate the post.
Sash - wow, love the lead vocals on this, with a fresh sexy French sound where what little vocals were required on this mainly instrumental dance floor classic. Looking at their catalogue moving forward, a string of Top 10 hits throughout 1997 and 1998 were still to come, so a welcome new arrival to the charts at this point!
ReplyDeleteThe Artist - Good to see him on a second visit to the TOTP studio after his first masked one in 1995/96 with a previous single as The Artist, but this was to be his last single spanning back to 1983 when the song 1999 first graced the Top 40 in the UK on it's first of two releases in the early 80s. In fact 1999 had a second re-release unsurprisingly in 1999 which got to No.10, but The Holy River here in 1997 was The Artist's final Top 40 single stretching back to 1983 when it all started for him chartwise Top 40 as Prince.
Spice Girls - what, another No.1 to come for the Girls with this one? They were only just reaching No.1 in America on this February week in 1997 with their debut single Wannabe, some six months after being No.1 in the UK with it the previous summer in 1996. Loved Posh Spice's outfit this week on Mama.
I can't be the only one who thinks it amazing that 'Don't Speak' by No Doubt is 28 years old.
ReplyDeleteOnly seems like yesterday.
Two singles peaking outside the Top 40 this week and worth a mention:
ReplyDeleteNo.46 Van Morrison - The Healing Game
Seems to come up with a new single every other year on average in the 90s, and last single to make top 40 was Gloria in 1993, so he was due some more success now, but not be with only a No.46 for his efforts this time round.
No.77 Right Said Fred - Big Time
Good Lord, this lot still around in 1997? Last time they were in the Top 75 was in 1994 with Wonderman at a No.55 peak, so like Morrison they were due for some success, but also no luck this time with only a No.77 peak for their efforts in 1997.
Republica: great power pop / rock tune, too bad it didn't get any higher in the charts. Didn't age for me at all.
ReplyDeleteSash!: the start of the continental dance invasion for the next years?
The Artist: meh, didn't impress me.
