Top of the Pops Days

Thank you for the days, those endless days, those sacred days you gave me, and thank you for the 27th July 1989 edition of Top of the Pops!

The Primitives – “Sick Of It” (33)
We get underway tonight with a taste of proto-britpop but this proved to be the band's final top 40 hit and it peaked at number 24.

Gloria Estefan – “Don’t Wanna Lose You” (6) (video)
At its peak.

Inner City – “Do You Love What You Feel?” (28) (video)
Peaked at number 16.

Kirsty MacColl – “Days” (14)
Giving a rousing studio performance and the song went up two more places.

Gun – “Better Days” (35) (breaker)
Went up two more places.

Paul McCartney – “This One” (37) (breaker)
Peaked at number 18.

The Stone Roses – “She Bangs The Drums” (36) (breaker)
Our first taste of Madchester - but this song had to wait until 1990 to peak at number 34!

Simple Minds – “Kick It In” (23) (video)
Peaked at number 15.

Bros – “Too Much” (2)
In the studio with their new line-up and harder new sound and this song was their sixth of eight top ten hits and their fourth of four number twos.

Simply Red – “A New Flame” (17) (video)
The best video of the night but the song went up no further.

Sonia – “You’ll Never Stop Me Loving You” (1)
Back in the studio for her second and final week at number one.

Alice Cooper – “Poison” (34) (video/credits)
Halloween arrives early and Poison became his fifth of five top ten hits and his first top 40 hit since 1974 when it peaked at number 2.

You'll Never Stop Me Loving Top of the Pops

It doesn't really matter what you put me through, you'll never stop me from loving the 20th of July 1989 edition of Top of the Pops!

London Boys – “London Nights” (2)
Leaping into action once more but their second and final top ten hit was now at its peak.

Eartha Kitt & Bronski Beat – “Cha Cha Heels” (39) (video)
This eccentric tune went up seven more places.

Monie Love – “Grandpa’s Party” (16)
Is this a new performance? Hard to tell but the song went up no further.

Jive Bunny & The Mastermixers – “Swing The Mood” (31) (video)
Hopping its way relentlessly towards number one.

The Blow Monkeys featuring Sylvia Tella – “Choice?” (27)
From their top 5 album Choices this was their final top 40 hit and it peaked at number 22.

Bobby Brown – “On Our Own” (4) (video)
No, it's not fake news, that really is Donald Trump! But the song was now at its peak.

Doug Lazy – “Let It Roll” (36) (video)
His only top 40 hit and it peaked at number 27.

Rufus & Chaka Khan – “Ain’t Nobody” (remix) (6) (video)
At its peak.

Sonia – “You’ll Never Stop Me Loving You” (1)
Triumphantly back in the studio to perform what was her first of two weeks at number one.

Got no higher.

The Second Top of the Pops of Summer

And there was love love love on the 13th July 1989 edition of Top of the Pops!

Danny Wilson – “The Second Summer Of Love” (27)
It's mainly videos tonight but at least Danny Wilson are in the studio to get us underway with what would be the band's final top 40 hit and it peaked at number 23.

Bette Midler – “Wind Beneath My Wings” (9) (video)
Despite the rather dull video this song became her first of two top ten hits when it peaked at number 5.

De La Soul – “Say No Go” (22) (video)
Went up four more places.

Michael Jackson – “Liberian Girl” (18) (video)
Now this video was a bit more interesting to say the least! This ninth single from his Bad album (which only had 11 tracks on it in total) peaked at number 13.

Waterfront – “Cry” (25)
Here are the only other act in the studio tonight to perform the duo's only top 40 hit and it peaked at number 17.

Peaked at number 6.

Norman Cook – “Blame It On The Bassline” (31) (video)
The proto-Fatboy Slim with his only top 40 hit under his own name and it peaked at number 29.

Kirsty MacColl – “Days” (28) (video)
The original had peaked at number 12 for the Kinks in 1968, and this colourful cover also peaked at number 12.

LA Mix – “Get Loose” (29) (video)
The duo's second and final top 40 hit and it peaked at number 25.

Peaked at number 17.

Soul II Soul – “Back To Life (However Do You Want Me)” (1) (video)
Fourth and final week at number one.

Monie Love – “Grandpa’s Party” (22)
In the studio tonight and the tune was on its way to number 16.

Karyn White – “Superwoman” (21) (video)
Her biggest hit and it peaked at number 11.

Bette Midler - "The Wind Beneath My Wings" (30) (breaker)
Became her first of two top ten hits when it peaked at number 5.

Danny Wilson - "The Second Summer Of Love" (32) (breaker)
Their final top 40 hit and it peaked at number 23.

De La Soul - "Say No Go" (33) (breaker)
Became their second of ten top 40 hits when it peaked at number 18.

The Beautiful South – “Song For Whoever” (2)
A new studio performance but the song was now at its peak.

Pet Shop Boys – “It’s Alright” (5) (video)
The duo's final hit of the 80's and number 5 was the peak for this baby.

Chaka Khan – “Ain’t Nobody” (remix) (18)
It made number 8 first time around in '84, five years on she's performing in the studio and it went two places higher at number 6.

Soul II Soul – “Back To Life (However Do You Want Me)” (1) (video)
Third of four weeks at number one.

A Guy Called Gerald – “Voodoo Ray” (26) (video/credits)
His only top 40 hit and it peaked at number 12.

Double Trouble & Rebel MC – “Just Keep Rockin’” (11)
Third time on the show but this tune was now at its peak.

Donna Allen – “Joy & Pain” (10) (rpt from 15/06/89)
Also at its peak.

Peaked at number 16.

Gladys Knight – “Licence To Kill” (20) (video)
This James Bond theme song became her fifth top ten hit, and also her final hit, when it peaked at number 6.

U2 – “All I Want Is You” (5) (video)
Is that a young Peter Dinklage? The song went up one more place.

Bangles – “Be With You” (26)
Quite a pleasant surprise they turned up in the studio to perform this song because they split up not long afterwards, and it went up three more places.

Clannad & Bono – “In A Lifetime” (21) (studio/video)
Gosh, she looks like her sister doesn't she? Clannad's final top 40 hit and it peaked at number 17.

Prince – “Batdance” (3) (video)
Kapow! From the movie Batman of course, and this wacky tune went up one more place.

D Mob featuring LRS – “It Is Time To Get Funky” (11) (rpt from 08/06/89)
Went up two more places.

Getting tonight's bellybutton-tastic show underway and the song peaked at number 14.

REM – “Orange Crush” (28)
One of the biggest bands of the 90's making their debut on the show but surprisingly the song went up no further.

Donna Allen – “Joy & Pain” (22)
Bouncing into the studio and the song peaked at number 10.

Bangles – “Be With You” (31) (breaker)
Peaked at number 23.

Clannad & Bono – “In A Lifetime” (30) (breaker)
Had peaked at number 20 in 1986, this time it made it to number 17.

Placido Domingo & Jennifer Rush – “Till I Loved You” (33) (breaker)
Peaked at number 24.
