ReplyDeleteThanks Rob. Not sure how I missed these, but does anybody have the 21.9.1996 and 14.9.1996 TOTP 2 episodes that they can share? Sorry for being so late on these
DeleteIt's a pity that WeTransfer reduced the download opportunity from 7 days to 3 days, as it means that people can quite easily miss the deadline, especially if they are busy for a couple of days, so I sympathise with your situation.
DeleteThanks Rob!!!
DeleteYou can change we transfer to 7 days, but rob won't be able to as not his uploads, they are copied from the popscene uploader with no thanks.

Also thanks to Rob for posting/reposting the originals.
Thanks to all!
DeleteNot as good a TOTP2 as the last show, but my pick was The First Time section with Meat Loaf's first time performing in the TOTP studio coming as late as 1984 when not in the Jim Steinman camp at the time, and the path of Meat's music moving towards a less distinctive sound, but nevertheless it was a long awaited debut in the TOTP studio, now on his fourth album by 1984, and third album without Steinman.
DeleteThe only other pick on this show was the new Pet Shop Boys video Single Bilingual, with a superb new video on location at Stansted airport, according to presenter Johnnie Walker.
@Anonymous Where on the popscene website are these original files located exactly? I can' find them anywhere.
Deletefacebook page
Deleteis there a link to that group? I've tried looking for it before...
DeleteHighlight of the show for me was East 17 featuring Gabrielle. I was never a fan of either of them and would always fast forward, but when combining on this one, I must say I was very taken by the gorgeous melody of this song, and just got lulled and sort of hypnotised by it. Brilliant!
ReplyDeleteIt's great to see that 80s pop icons like Michael Jackson, Prince were on the same and new material in a 1996 TOTP show with new videos this late in their careers. Add in for good measure David Bowie with a new entry lower down the chart this week at peak position of No. 79 with Telling Lies, these pop superstars were not going anywhere, and were willing to compete for the top spot with the next generation.
Ready for TOTP2....
Totally agree with you Dory. 'If You Ever' is a stunner and one of the singles of the year for me. I liked both acts at the time but wouldn't have bought their singles but this one I immediately bought. A cover which i didn't know at the time, but way better than the original by Shai. Also proves like the Christmas Day '94 performance of 'Stay Another Day', what a brilliant singer Brian Harvey could be when he really had something to get behind. Another single of the year is 'One and One'. Really good to hear that again.
DeleteThe gardener hacking his way through the Top 10 was the funniest rundown I've ever heard!
The quality of this East 17-Gabrielle combo single was on a par with Patti Labelle &Michael McDonald in 1986 with On My Own, and also Peter Cetera&Amy Grant in he same year with The Next Time I Fall In Love, and also Peak Bryson&Roberta Flack in 1983 with Tonight I Celebrate My Love.
DeleteIt's great to see that the 90s generation kept up the high standard of duets and ballads that came out of the 70s and 80s pop stars.
