A wonderful lineup and edition from 78. Great seeing BBC4 continuing with the early editions.
DeleteHi Bronze, good to see more new bloggers on here. Yes it was so entertaining this edition. 'Nice 'N' Sleazy' was a brilliantly malevolent soundtrack to the chart rundown. I thought it was a bit slow to get going but after about 10 mins just went whoosh! and was non stop entertainment.
DeleteGreat as well that we got the full show again. My highlights;
The ever charming 'Never Let Her Slip Away' and the delightful video. I have a very very early memory of this single being connected with being somewhere in Watford sometime in '78. Maybe it was coming out of a shop radio.
Dee D Jackson 'Automatic Lover' was fabulous kitsch with a tune that goes off appropriately like a rocket and she was quite the extra terrestrial voyager as well. I'm surprised she never got a spot performing it on series 1 of the 'Kenny Everett Video Show' soon to begin on Thames. It would've been perfect after Captain Kremen. Highlight of the edition for me.
Great to see the debut of Hi Tension and Darts owning the stage like seasoned professionals which is not a phrase that automatically comes to mind when talking about Den Heggarty but even he seemed coolly understated this time while wearing a suit that would have him given immediate God status in Glastonbury's Shangri-la area. Rita shimmying marvellously throughout.
Co-Co were pretty decent for a Eurovision entry and the audience were clearly given 'not like last year' orders from the gantry. If LWT had had any plans to revive 'On The Buses' at the time and they needed a replacement for Bob Grant they could've called on this group's bassist.
Boomtown Rats frenetic fun (with very of it's time freeze framed leap in the air) and a diametric contrast from Manhattan Transfer. Another very far off memory ('Walk In Love' to be precise) and maybe the only non out and out comedy act that could have a middle aged man dressed in full far Eastern attire and not raise a hint of a titter. Unbelievable amount of talent among that quartet.
Plenty of Legs this week and though I think the routine for 'Night Fever' was not as originally broadcast ill take that over Travolta strutting about or Barry momentarily opting to shave off the beard. We've got Gill momentarily opting to have her hair done up on one side and, well, talk about centre stage! She utterly dominates this routine and what a treat it is to see her. Was it her birthday? Had she just got engaged? The perfect chart topping moment.
Kid as ever authoritative and good fun.
Thank you Mic, 1,2,1,2 Seeing the Boomtown Rats reminded me if BBC4 will broadcast any programmes to do with the 40th anniversary of Live Aid.
DeleteLooks like the Beeb has still got issues with broadcasting these movie clips like Saturday Night Fever, and much as I love Legs & Co, I would still prefer watching the TOTP shows as they were originally broadcast, and not cut and paste work by the editors 40 years later. Would also like to see the DLT presented shows, as there is so much good music on them, but the Beeb are still not showing them.

DeleteCheers!
DeleteWhen I first heard this Toni Braxton single, I thought it had a Kenny G sound on it, not knowing that the official Artist on the song is 'Toni Braxton with Kenny G', so it was a pity that Kenny G was not on stage with her doing the saxophone parts.
ReplyDeleteWas good to see a new TOTP studio performance from Aqua at No.1 for the second week, as the last two weeks we had the first one, and no play of the famous video yet. Anyway, on this new studio performance it looks like the lead singer didn't have enough time to do her hair before the show!
An new entry and at peak this week at No.51 was Soul II Soul with Pleasuredome, which turned out to be their final singe in a chart catalogue stretching back to 1989 with their first top 40 single Keep On Moving.
Hello musiclovers, two of my favourites in this 97 one. Backstreet Boys and Natalie Imbruglia. I bought her album. Brilliant debut album.
ReplyDeleteCan't play totos2 this week , Codec issue ,unsupported. Am I doing something wrong ?
ReplyDeleteSorted thanks Rob
DeleteWasn't it the 98 lot when Steve Wright finished presenting these? I never watched a lot of them at the time.
