Never Ever Top of the Pops

You can tell me to my face, you can tell me on phone, it's the 21st of November 1997 edition of Top of the Pops!

21-11-97:   Presenter:  Jo Whiley

(6) ERROL BROWN – You Sexy Thing
Getting the show underway with this famous Hot Chocolate tune that had peaked at number 2 in 1975, but this time around number 6 was as high as it got.

(9) OCEAN COLOUR SCENE – Better Day
With their sixth and final top ten hit but it got no higher.

(5) HANSON – I Will Come To You
Here with their third of four top ten hits but it got no higher.

(8) PULP – Help The Aged
A second performance but the song was now at its peak.

(14) CONNER REEVES – Earthbound
In the studio with his second of five top 40 hits but it got no higher.

(13) METALLICA – The Memory Remains
Here tonight with special guest Marianne Faithfull but the song got no higher.

(3) ALL SAINTS – Never Ever
Performing a rare thing in 1997 - a song that will slowly climb the charts all the way to number one! And deservedly so too.

  1. Seven new entries inside the Top 14 were shown on this show, and the next one down at No.18 and at peak which was the arrival of Steps with 5,6,7,8 not making the cut, which seems strange considering it got so much airplay at the time,

Metallica had their headbanging audience in the TOTP studio. I thought the practice was outlawed by then for prevention of brain damage, but clearly not. Anyway, I was looking up Metallica's rise, and they actually started out in 1981, despite only having their first UK single in 1987, so by now in 1997 they were already 10 years into the UK chart across their singles to date.

I did like seeing Marianne Faithful on guest vocals with Metallica in the TOTP studio, which was quite a surprise, as I don't remember this at the time, and also as she passed away only a few months ago at the start of the year. RIP

  2. All Saints Never Ever was a good one. Based at the beginning on Amazing Grace. It was mentioned in a documentary which I saw a few years ago. It could've been one of the Britain's best songs 1997 programme or the videos one.

    2. Nice to see Steve Wright continuing the format and graphics from his TOTP2 predecessor Johnnie Walker, and keeping in the One Hit Wonder section, Recorded For Recall, and a nice tribute at the end to Michael Hutchence of INXS who died that week in 1997 by showing his final TOTP appearance in May 1997.

    3. Sadly two great broadcasters no longer with us. I used to enjoy listening to Steve Wright in the afternoon all through the 80s on Radio 1.
