  1. Gina G was a new entry and at peak at No.52 this week, and first single of hers not to make it into the Top 30, so unsurprisingly she called it a day with this final single called Every Time I Fall.

In contrast, UB40 with a new entry one place below her at No.53, and also at peak, did not give up after so many years of releasing chart singles, that they would be back a year later in late 1998 with a Top 10 single called Come Back Darling.

I also noticed a new entry at peak at No.68 for Karen Young with Hot Shot '97. This was a re-recording of the original No,34 single in 1978 at the hight of the disco era, and subsequently used as the soundtrack to the ITV snooker Hot Shots feature during their snooker coverage in the 80s and 90s. I bought the original 7-inch from 1978 a couple of years ago, and would recommend the original video, as well as the snooker soundtrack:

    1. I've never been a Eurovision watcher, except for when Bucks Fizz won it in 1981, as they were quite a novelty and lots of fun, so the whole Eurovision was worth watching then. I don't think any of the Brits on Eurovision have ever been more watchable than Jay Aston of Bucks Fizz!

    2. Was really sad in 1972 when the New Seekers didn't win. However, Vicky Leandros sung a great winning song 'Come what may'. Also, in 1974 when Abba won, the runner up 'Si' by Gigliola Cinquetti was one of my favourites.

  3. I really enjoyed Moby, loved his take on the James Bond Theme. Torn still sounds great today.
Does anyone please have Top of the Pops 08/12/1977, it was repeated on BBCFour on Sat 7 Dec 2024 and unfortunately I missed it.

    1. A very good TOTP2 this one. Surprised to see a Gilbert O'Sullivan November 1972 TOTP studio performance in black & white, as I thought by then, all the TOTP shows went out in colour from 1970, so does anyone know if that whole 1972 show was in black & white at the time? Certainly at the end of this TOTP2 show, there was The Strawbs 1972 single Lay Down, which was also in black & white, so another surprise not to be in colour in 1972.

Also love the Showaddywaddy single Dancing party from November 1977, as this one was always my favourite of theirs, and not the obvious one that was their only No.1 at the back end of 1976. I love how Dave Bartram namechecks his band members towards the end of the Dancing' Party clip, and also how he gently walks into the studio audience and dances close up with the girls. Smooth!

    2. I haven't watched it yet, as Im watching 30 hits of 1988 from last night.
But assuming the Gilbert O'Sulivan song is Clair, a colour version does exist, but the show now only exists in Black and White.
BBC1 colour broadcats started in 1969. BBC2 started in 1967.

      From popscene:

      16-11-72: Presenter: Jimmy Savile O.B.E.

      (1) GILBERT O’SULLIVAN – Clair

This show exists as a black and white recording only, although the performances by The Osmonds, Rod Stewart, Gilbert O'Sullivan and the promo from the Shangri-Las exist in colour.

    3. The Hits of 1988 was good. It's good that BBC2 have a music themed night on Saturdays more now. Moving on from 1988 to 1998, will the Top of the Pops 1998 carry on here or is there a new title page we use?

    4. 1998 will just carry on here, Bronze, but with a new name to match the year. Any suggestions for the new name?

    1. 29/01/70 is another one that was telerecorded in b&w but a few clips also exist on colour vt. The last show recorded in black and white was 13/11/69 of which Nancy Sinatra, The Beatles, Jethro Tull and Fleetwood Mac have survived.
