Oh it's such a perfect day, I'm glad I spent it with the 28th of November 1997 edition of Top of the Pops!
Sister act
28-11-97: Presenter: Mark Lamarr
(10) LOUISE – Let’s Go Round Again
Getting the show underway with this Average White Band cover, but it got no higher.
(15) ROBERT MILES feat. KATHY SLEDGE – Freedom
Kathy is here to perform Robert's fourth and final top 40 hit but it got no higher.
(19) MARY J. BLIGE – Missing You
Here tonight but also got no higher.
(3) STEVEN HOUGHTON – Wind Beneath My Wings
With his only top ten hit and it was at its peak.
(NEW) TELETUBBIES – Teletubbies Say “Eh-Oh” (video)
Incredibly popular children's tv show and will get to number one.
(5) ALL SAINTS – Never Ever
A second studio performance for a song that will sell a record 770,000 copies before finally getting to number one next year!
(12) ERROL BROWN – You Sexy Thing
This re-release had already peaked at number 6.
(1) VARIOUS ARTISTS – Perfect Day (video) (and credits)
First of two weeks at number one for this year's Children in Need single.
I still have the CD single of Perfect Day by various artists, it was good seeing some of my favourites like Lou Reed, Michael Hutchence, David Bowie, Tom Jones.....Two years before Duran Duran covered Perfect Day and was on Top of the Pops with their original member Roger Taylor drumming with them for the first time in that studio since the original five.
ReplyDeleteOther Children In Need singles did not do so well, for example the previous year in 1996, The Red Hill Children only made it to No.40 on the singles chart with When Children Rule The World, taken from the musical Whistle Down The Wind.
DeleteDoes anyone have the TOTP2 from that week? I believe it features INXS’ last performance on the show with Everything (which was recorded in May of that year but was never broadcast)

DeleteThanks Anonymous, the TOTP2 of that week had what I think is the first TOTP studio performance by Paul McCartney in December 1997 with Once Upon A Long Ago which may have been inspired by George Harrison having new success around that time with his comeback single Got My Mind Set On You which got to No.2 thanks to two videos for the single from the Cloud Nine album produced with Jeff Lynne of ELO.
DeleteAlso, at the end of the show was the full video for the new No.1 Perfect Day by Various Artists, with the difference from the main TOTP showing the day before, being that on the TOTP2 showing of the video had the name of each singing contributor as they appeared during the song.
Thanks Anonymous!
DeleteThe Prodigy with a new entry at No.8 this week, was the only single on the Top 20 rundown where the regular weekly voiceover on the rundown did not say the song title like with all the other singles on the rundown. But then who would, and also who would be brave enough to give them a full slot on the show with such a song title, even to show the video?
ReplyDeleteThe video is quite something!
DeleteI would love to see TOTP2 from 09/11/1996 please
ReplyDeleteIf anyone has this episode, can they please upload it.
