Good Lord, Phil Collins still bothering with TOTP as late as 1996 when the next generation had already taken over with completely different music. Still hope then for more 70s and 80s groups to consider a comeback in the late 90s?

Iron Maiden's new entry and peak position of No.16 with Virus was their first single for a year since Man On The Edge got to No.10 around this time in 1995.
Clock - I know I mentioned a couple of shows ago that I didn't like this one compared to the Franki Valli original, but on this showing and with their Back To The Future style musicians outfits, coupled with the new extra lyrics that were not on the original, I quite like this one now. It had shades of how Warren G sampled the original Michael McDonald 1982 single I Keep Forgetting (I'm Not In Love anymore), to come up with a song called Regulate which made No.5 in 1994.
Not quite as good as last week but opens with my favourite Belinda Carlisle solo song (and yes that's entirely to do with it being a Per Gessle track, though I do like plenty of her other stuff).

Ready or Not was my favourite Fugees track and a two week spot at the top is a nice amount of time.
DBS and Bluetones are the best of the rest for me.
The Cardigans at 20, Mansun at 19 and Iron Maiden at 16 could all feel justified in being annoyed they weren't included when two old songs and two exclusives managed to get slots.

Had the new season of TOTP2 arrived by now, as normally it comes back after the summer holidays around September time and goes on until April - or so it had for the first two seasons since 1994?
ReplyDeleteI believe Johnnie Walker did one more season in 1996-97 before passing the baton onto Steve Wright, so if we could get the final Johnnie Walker season of shows uploaded on here, that would be great.
I listened on Sunday to Johnnie Walker's final broadcast and it was tremendously moving. His parting words and then the final song, Judy Collins' version of 'Amazing Grace' was so poignant. I've loved hearing his shows ever since hearing him on Saturday afternoons on Radio 1 around the start of the '90s. His voice will always be associated with great music I had never heard before. Thank you Johnnie.

ReplyDeleteFunnily enough I recall I was on an Autumn break in Somerset when DBS were No1 with 'Breakfast at Tiffanys'. I will have to tune into the repeat when it is shown to see if my memory cheats...the intro by the host went something like 'Tea at Grants'...it will be interesting.

I think that Aug 1976 show was the episode with Ruby Flipper dancing to The Bee Gees track called You Should Be Dancing, which I found more appealing than any footage of The Bee Gees doing their own single. Good Lord!

DeleteJust watched the 21st Sep TOTP2 which was a celebration of the No.1's on each 100th show up to the 1700th show in Sep 1996 with the The Fugees Ready Or Not.
DeleteMy pick of the bunch on this show was the 300th show's No.1 which was Sugar Sugar by The Archie's in 1969 with a routine by Pan's People in one of the earliest colour TOTP show's if at the time you were wealthy enough to have a colour TV. We were still watching in black&white until the mid-70s at least.

The 500th episode had Eye Level by Simon Park Orchestra, the clip then used was from 27/09/73 on the 499th.
