Dude of the Pops

I do what I can when I feel like the 16th of August 1996 edition of Top of the Pops!

  1. Two episodes where the TOTP presenters outshone the performers on the show. OK, so Beer van Bears on the next show (can't wait), but on this one Jo Whiley made the whole show watchable without switching off half-way through.

Cher - still going strong in 1996 and this Walker Brothers classic sounded unusual with female vocals, as the original was a huge iconic moment in pop music in the 1960's.

OMC - repeat studio performance of their first appearance, and loved to see those two slinky girls on stage with those gorgeous moves. Made this song all the more appealing, along with Jo Whiley on presenting duties.

Los Del Rio - first showing of the video, and now at peak position of No.2, it just had to be the chart rundown video this week. Hard to believe that the Americans to such a big liking to this song to give it 14 weeks at No.1!

A new entry at No.74 and lurking outside the Top 40 at peak position, was 2 In A Room with Giddy-Up. I suppose this was to bring back the good times of their 1991 Top 3 single called Wiggle It, but this turned out to be their worst chart position for any of their singles, and finally called it a day with this single in 1996.

  2. Jo and Steve definitely getting more comfortable in the role, especially as there weren't many Britpop type groups tonight.

I loved that we got a bit of Sepultura on the Pops! Shame not to have Nas's If I Ruled the world which is a great tune, though I can't remember if Nas has been revealed to be a wrong un or not. 1997 is going to have its share of Puff Daddy (etc) gaps...

I really respect that the Spice Girls seem to be giving a new performance each week, good for them.
