Beg to differ Angelo, as there was unusually no chart rundown this week on the Fugees video, although looking at the charts, I think it was because of the No.35 new entry on the chart, with a group called Horny As Funk with a song title of Soapy, and so this was what likely prompted TOTP not to have a chart rundown this week, as TOTP is considered a family show and before the watershed. Can't think of any other reason, especially as song titles like this were not new, and generally always peaked outside the 40, so it didn't matter.
ReplyDeleteStretch 'n' Vern - weird sampling of the 1979 classic Boogie Wonderland that I felt didn't really suit the single, but hey, each to their own. With a song called I'm Alive, couldn't they have sampled the 1980 ELO tune of the same name on the Xanadu soundtrack, as it also had a disco vibe?
So with no chart rundown this week, there were some interesting new entries at peak positions:
No.31 Sting - I Was Brought To My Senses
No.39 Sarah Cracknell - Anymore
No.45 Bizarre Inc - Get Up Sunshine Street
Sarah Cracknell from Saint Etienne with her only solo single, and not sure if it was split from Etienne or just taking a break to try solo, but looking at the singles releases, there was no new music from Saint Etienne in 1996 and 1997, so I presume it was the latter.
Bizarre Inc were on their final single now in 1996, as only a 1999 re-mix of their debut single Playing With Knives was released following this, so their five-year run since 1991 was now at an end.
Hadn't even noticed there was no chart rundown until you mentioned it, Dory! Yes, I think you could be right about the reason why.

DeleteI think they just forgot to do it, like on 5/7/96 considering they've censored names before or kept them in other chart rundowns.
DeleteThe missing chart was weird, even more so if that was the reason when you had Dennis Pennis presenting and some of his gags like the Abba one.
ReplyDeleteThis was such a good episode - or maybe I'm just happy to see no more endless Macarenas, How Bizarres and Wannabes.
DP was a naff host but very, very 90s. Paul Kaye has done well as an actor since but I always still think 'oh this has Dennis Pennis in it'.
I don't care much for Flava but at least it's a one and done, and everything else was enjoyable. Donna Lewis and Jamiroquai perhaps a little overdone but that might be more the effect of us seeing two episodes a week.
Skunk Anansie my main highlight - All I Want gets so forgotten compared to Weak, Twisted etc so it was great to see that again.
The Abba revival was such a 96-97 moment, I'm assuming this was tied into Abba Gold? That album was everywhere.

DeleteThanks Rob, just watched this first episode of TOTP2 series 3, and I picked out out from the Recorded For Recall section featuring June 1977, the bridge from Tom Petty to Emerson, Lake & Palmer's video for Fanfare For The Common Man - highly recommended, as I just love that huge Montreal Olympic stadium, even though it was completely empty.
DeleteIt's pity that this was Johnnie Walker's final series hosting TOTP2, as it was only the third series since its inception in 1994, especially as there were new features for series 3, I mean One Hit Wonders - this week with Trio's Da Da Da from 1982, and the Video Classic section with the full 12-minute of the Michael Jackson Thriller video from 1983.
