  3. The Pet Shop Boys - wow this was brilliant, and back to their 80s style it seemed, and a sort of Go West fancy dress, with my preferred gaze at the dancer on stage with the shiny blue wig. Very nice those grooves.

The Eurythmics - more 80s bands still producing new music in 1999, was it really 10 years since their last new single? Good Lord, Annie Lennox's voice seemed to have deteriorated big time by this point.

Further down the chart, three interesting new entries at peak with week:

No. 54 Def Leppard - Goodbye
Not quite, but last new single for three years until 2002.

    No.56 Roxette - Stars
Second of two comeback singles in 1999, and there would be nothing further for 6 years until a re-release of Fading Like A Flower in 2005.

No. 96 FPI Project - Going Back To My Roots
Re-release of their 1990 big dance hit.

    1. @Dory to be fair to the Eurythmics, Annie Lennox went solo in the early 1990s. She had an excellent hit with 'Walking on Broken Glass", and starred John Malkovich and Hugh Lawrie in the video.

Then in 1995 had another hit with "No More "I Love You's" whilst stepping away to bring up young children.

Dave Stewart co-wrote Shakespeare's Sister whiney number 1 in 1992, "Stay", which stayed at number one well past it's sell by date.
In 1996 he produced Alisha's Attic album and in 1997 co-produced Jon Bon Jovi's album.

So they were really busy, just that Eurythmics were on hiatus.

I have to say Annie's voice was ok.

Now a woman I could never stand - Macy Gray, like fingernails down a blackboard!

    2. Agreed, very strange comment regarding Annie Lennox. Not a favourite song of mine by any means, but actually thought it was a very strong vocal, as you would expect from her.

    3. The Roxette song was shown on German TOTP if I remember correctly

  4. Just checked out the Pet Shop Boys video, and the TOTP studio performance invited back the same characters with same clothing as on the second half of the video set in the New York nightspot Studio 54, so it was a bit like the video re-enacted in the TOTP studio.

By the way, the video was another one of those that was a dream from start to finish, this time by the boy daydreaming in New York City, and Neil Tennant described it as the most expensive video they have ever done:
