Take me all the way to the 8th of May 1998 edition of Top of the Pops!
Rimes and rhythm
8-5-98: Presenter: Jamie Theakston
(3) THE TAMPERER feat. MAYA – Feel It
Still in the queue for number one.
(4) BOYZONE – All That I Need
Ronan and the boys make it into the studio with last week's number one.
(29) FREAK POWER – No Way
With their third and final top 40 hit but it got no higher.
(7) STEPS – Last Thing On My Mind
Had already peaked at number 6 last week.
(18) THE JUNGLE BROTHERS – Jungle Brother
Performing their highest charting single and it was now at its peak.
(12) LeANN RIMES – How Do I Live
Making her debut in the studio tonight but the song had already peaked at number 7.
(60) IMAANI – Where Are You
This year's Eurovision entry. It will do pretty well and finish runner-up, and will peak in the charts at number 15.
(1) ALL SAINTS – Under The Bridge (and credits)
First of two non-consecutive weeks at number one.
Freakpower - really liked this one, and the originality of the TOTP studio performance to have a house party theme on stage with 60s and 70s colours and fashion, and the funny idea of having the co-singer on the other side of a wall, isolated from the party, and only looking into fun right at the end.
ReplyDeleteSurprised that TOTP reached down as low as No.29 in the charts, when the format was really only a Top 20 show of performers in the late 90s, with only a Top 20 rundown.
Also a new entry and peak position of No.84 this week was Bucks Fizz with Making Your Mind Up '98, which was 17 years after their original in 1981 that won the Eurovision Song Contest, if anyone can be bothered listening to the '98 version.
This episode was awful. So many high new entries and climbers in the top 15 that got ignored from the likes of The Bluetones, Garbage and Madonna - at number 2! And they rely on songs we've already had or that are going down the charts.
