  1. Early this week. I didn't catch the opening link from Simon (younger than last time) but I assume the rhyming links are to do with the fact that it was National Poetry Day around that time. The inaugural one I think; I still have the Top 100 most popular poems in paperback with foreword by Griff Rhys Jones. Simon's poetic links are pretty good as is his hairstyle and I will do my best to offer a suitably florid summary of the first two numbers.

    The Outhere Brothers; Rubbish

    Umboza; Rubbish

Janet Jackson; The video of 'Runaway' with the charts. Unlucky whoever was in the charts having to vie with Janet darting across various world landmarks (some scale issues there I'd say) but still delightful to watch. So of its time.

Smokie feat Roy Chubby Brown; On again but with little comic extras. Oh, how I didn't laugh.

Pulp; Better! Great to get a studio performance of 'Mis-Shapes' which kicks off 'Different Class' so brilliantly and for me always far better than the other side. I still think 'Sorted...' is the weakest thing on the album. This track just charges along with some incredibly sharp and witty lyrics. What a stylish misfit Jarvis was at that time. His reading on stage of the newspaper with THAT headline almost as funny as when he referred to himself as a "grotesque ponce from Sheffield" when presenting the show a few weeks ago. Just a shame he didn't do a Chubby Brown and say "bleeping thick".

Mariah Carey; A divine looking Mariah by satellite. Did anyone else watch the backscenes and think of the start of 'The Naked Gun'? Delightful single though mostly due to the Tom Tom Club sample.

Erasure; I've really enjoyed hearing 'Stay With Me' again. Could be one of their very best singles.

Iron Maiden; Whoah! Stand well back! Welcome Maiden. Miming? You OK with that? They seem like they're having a great time. They seem to have one true fan in the audience at least. The rest jump about or stand about awkwardly. Notably the singer looks like Neil Young around 1976.

Shaggy; I really enjoy this chart topper but I didn't enjoy it this evening. Was it just my TV or were there serious sound issues during this. He was quiet/loud/quiet/loud all through it. I went to other channels and there didn't seem to be a problem. Looked fun.

Does our presenter know the album 'There Goes Rhyming Simon'? I'm sure it crossed his mind. Roxy Music from Xmas '79 to finish. Maybe the end tune should've been Telly Savalas with 'If'.

  2. The Outhere Brothers - this sounded so much like Don't Stop Wiggle Wiggle that you could be forgiven if you had got the two mixed up.At least both singles took up Top 10 status.

Umboza - I don't recall this one at all, but the Lionel Richie All Night Long jingle didn't resonate as much as the nice girl dancers on the stage, especially the purple miniskirted one.

Janet Jackson - great to see the video again, this time as the chart rundown video encompassing the summer of 1995 which looked like a very warm one.

Chart rundown - I noticed that the other Alice Who The X Is Alice by Gompie was at peak this week at No.17 with no showing, while Smokie in the Top 10 got a second studio appearance on TOTP. Would have liked to see Gompie too! Also new entries by David Bowie at No.35 and Haddaway at No.39 got no higher, and were left out or did not rise high enough to get a slot on the show.

Mariah Carey - at peak at No.4 this week and in the same week started an 8-week stint at No.1 in America with this single, so quite a different response across the Atlantic.

Iron Maiden - Good Lord, was this their first time in the TOTP studio? I can only remember clips of videos on TOTP for all their previous singles across the 80s and 90s. The strobe effect on this studio performance was just too much and very uncomfortable trying to watch the group through it.

    1. Iron Maiden first appeared in the TOTP studio in 1980 doing Running Free, but I think Man on the Edge was only their second time, so a 15 year gap between performances!

  3. There was a third Outhere Brothers tune? Wow.
I quite enjoyed that actually. Always bring a great performance.

Bought this Umboza tune .Very summary sound. Proper pans people vibe going on with all the dancing.

Smokie vs Gompie. When was the last time we had 2 versions of the same song in the Top 20?. Would it be Rick Astley and Nat King Cole in 87?

Another great tune from Pulp. Revolution is in the air. One of my favourite 90s albums Different Class. Mis-Shapes should get more airplay.

Sound quality on this Mariah tune is awful.

So many tunes we've had before on tonight's show but I will forgive this one as I'm a fan of this Erasure tune.

The Maiden carried on without Bruce then. They shouldn't have bothered.

Shaggy is back! Never taking himself too seriously. Not his finest tune but fun all the same.. don't recall the jeans advert at all.

    Rhyming Mayo very annoying.

    1. TOTP completely overlooked Gompie during its whole chart run, focussing entirely on Smokie with two separate invitations to the TOTP studio to perform. With Gompie at peak position the week at No.17 and still no look in on the show, we get Roy Chubby Brown instead.

Bruce Dickinson had already started a solo career chart wise in 1990 up until 1997, so not sure if he was in Iron Maiden during that period as well as his solo career.

    2. Blaze Bayley was singing with Iron Maiden.

    3. Thanks, it took TOTP2 of that week to mention that at the end of the Iron Maiden clip, but TOTP1 had no mention of that at all!

  4. Three new entries at peak position this week outside the Top 40 for previous chart regulars, and worth a mention:

No.50 The Osmonds - Crazy Horses
This was a new remix of their big No.2 hit from 1972, and not sure why it came back in 1995, but perhaps someone on here may know.

No.67 Joe Cocker - Have A Little Faith
Penultimate single for Cocker, having already had his last Top 40 single the previous year in 1994, there was only one more single to come in 1996 that also flatlined outside the Top 40.

No.86 Voice Of The Beehive - Angel Come Down
First single since 1992, and I believe their last, as this one really struggled, and not even a Top 75 listing. Good Lord!

  7. Not the strongest episode of 95. Pulp and Erasure were both great, Janet pleasant enough. Mariah and Shaggy aren't my personal favourites but good showings. Umboza was ok, the rest bleh.

    4. Superb, thank for uploading.

In the First Time section, it was nice to see New Order's first appearance on TOTP in 1983 with Blue Monday, as I don't remember it at the time, but what a classic track.

In The Video Stir, the new girl group Fluffy with Hypersonic were pre-Spice Girls by a few months, but watching their video, they were more hottie than the Spice Girls, but were in the rock genre rather than pop, and pop was the place to be for stardom which the Spice Girls were better placed in. I like the mention of then-Prime Minister in 1995 John Major being impressed by Fluffy!

In Recorded For Recall, I just loved the Dollar clip for Who Were You With In The Moonlight which is my favourite single from their short career, and the follow-up to Shooting Star which started off their chart success. Just love Teresa Bazaar's cute looks. Then on The Damned single Love Song, I never knew that Captain Sensible was part of The Damned before he went on to have a number one solo single in 1982 with Happy Talk.
