  1. Flashback video - never seen this clip before, and is my fave Stones tune along with Sympathy For the Devil. Did anyone watch Rock 'n' Roll Circus last weekend on Sky Arts, which was the Stones 1968 circus tent performance, with The Beatles watching in the audience? I remember buying the DVD years ago, and have just dusted it off for another play.

The Shamen - three-and-a-half minutes of this video which seemed to be made en-masse with the Ebeneezer Goode video, judging by the brown colour and similar strobe effect of both videos. Poor tune this one, and not surprised that they were not performing this in the TOTP studio this time round.

Rocking Birds - one of the three tunes on this Fred EP at No.26, and nice to see the other two bands on this EP making an appearance introducing the Rocking Birds, i.e., the gorgeous Sarah from Saint Etienne, and some unknown frontman from Flowered Up (who are they?). I would rather have watched Saint Etienne doing I'm Too Sexy than watching The Rocking Birds doing Deeply Dippy.
Saint Etienne are still to make their debut in the TOTP studio, now at their fourth single release, but it can't be too far off, surely?

INXS - finally, finally......making their first ever TOTP studio appearance, some 6 years after coming on to the scene in April 1986 with their first single in the UK, and all we had were their videos up until this point in 1992, so how did TOTP manage to get them performing on the show?

Boyz II Men - first showing of the video, and I like the way that Dortie introduces this song as the George Bush theme tune, as Bush had just lost the US presidency to Bill Clinton in this month, denying Bush a second term at The Whitehouse.

    1. Dory, I think we saw a few seconds as a breaker of Flowered Up's number 20 hit "Weekender" a few months back. They'd also had two tracks reach the 30's by this point as well.

    2. The frontman of Flowered Up was Liam Maher, and he died of a heroin overdose, as did his bandmate and brother. They were very talented, Weekender is a great track, but like with a lot of Britpop bands heroin was their curse.

    3. Good Lord, Liam with Sarah of Saint Etienne on that introduction of The Rockingbirds was only 24 there, and he died aged only 41 in 2009. How sad.

    4. Re The Rolling Stones clip; Sorry to appear this week just to be an anorak but it wasn't actually a Top of the Pops performance to my knowledge. It was recorded along with Gimmie Shelter for TV purposes a couple of weeks before and got shown as an insert clip for 25th Dec 1969 edition. Appears on an odds and ends collection from the show. Also survives is The Scaffold, Clodagh Rodgers and Marmalade featuring what looks like Richard Kiel in a necktie in the audience! Someone about 7ft tall anyway.

    5. Mic 1,2,1,2 btw

  2. Little Angels - the guy in red t shirt was a bit of a d*ck. song was substandard Stones…

Rockingbirds - ok, its for charity, but a very straight cover. As dory says. I would have preferred to see st etienne.

Breakers - Erasure seem to have released a single every month!

  3. Yay TOTP I missed you last week!

Slightly weird show where the breakers were by far the best bit.

Anyway, Little Angels - little appeal.

Ver Stones - I don't really love vintage clips but this is a good performance and at least it's a vehicle for the charts.

SS - I quite like this, possibly their fourth best single? And for Drag Race fans, I FINALLY realised it's Siobhan that GottMik reminds me of. It's been bugging me for ages!

Shamen with an OK but not great single.

I had forgotten all about the Fred EP. Cover EPs are one of 92's biggest trends. Don't think this was the best of the bunch but the least known act so I get why they wanted the promo.

Breakers - four stone cold bangers. Awesome.

Arrested Development with their finest hour.

INXS with an alright exclusive. Verses are a bit dull but the hook and chorus are good.

Then more Boyz II Men continuing the trend of number ones being videoed after their first week.

And I love 1996 and Big Hits 96 last week were just ridiculous in the amount of massive, massive songs. I always remember 94, 95 and 98 more fondly but 96 was so much better than I remembered.

    1. I mean Story of 96, obviously. I love 96 aired about five minutes after the real 96 happened!

  4. Four songs further down the chart at peak position this week with no TOTP for them:

    No.32 K-Klass - Don't Stop
No, this is not a Fleetwood Mac cover, but there'll be no more from K-Klass for another 12 months or so until November 1993 with a No.13 achievement.

No.36 Roy Orbison - Heartbreak Radio
Orbison was known for his heartbreak through his life, and I wonder if this was some sort of autobiography in this song, but it was to be his last ever single in the UK, apart from a reissue of I Drove All Night a year later in late 1993 which only got to No.47, so the curtain comes down on a glorious career for the Big O in the singles chart.

No.47 Nick Berry - Long Live Love
I much prefer Long Live Rock 'n' Roll by ACDC, but Nick Berry also makes his farewell here in his singles chart career, after two earlier singles in 1986 and 1992 made Top 3 for him.

    No.55 Yello - The Race/Bostich
OK so we know The Race for its top 10 achievement in 1988, but what was this Bostich as double A-Side on this single? Last release now for two years until late 1994 with their final single How How making only No.59.

  5. Fireworks night TOTP. Party banger or damp squib? Halfway in between for me.

Little Angels with a song which sounded just like Roxette without the woman singing. The Specials’ song with the same title wins hands down.

    I agree, where’s “Poing”?

The Sisters arrive, dressed like medieval strumpets and minus their gorgeous keyboardist. Love the earlier quip about this being their fourth best single (of four), but at least Marcy’s guitar solo was shorter and less boring than Chris Rea’s recent snorefest.

The Shamen return to a “Move Any Mountain” sound. Really enjoyed this. Shame the sepia wasn’t changed to blue for example to differentiate this from their last video.

One of the best TOTP interviews ever next. Good of Sarah and Liam to step aside and let The Rockingbords have a TOTP outing. Nice lilting country cover if way too soon after the original, you can tell a good ‘un when the guitarist’s singing along, but the singer lacks that certain star quality. Shame. See that gal at the front of the audience wielding drumsticks.

Breakers: typical Metallica and nowt much wrong with that, a flashy piece from En Vogue, plastic sounding soul from C&E, and Andy gets to wear the Mae West gear this time instead of Vinny.

“Taste It”? I could only hear it, and 20 seconds of that Aussie group was enough.

I couldn’t get the ‘Popscene’ website to work properly but, for the benefit of THX, Boys II Men had 11 other UK chart entries (including two collaborations) of which three went top ten, two were top 20 and five made the 30’s. I don’t think we’ve seen the last of those sawn off trousers.

  6. Oops! I missed out my critique of Arrested Development's agreeable song story rap. Not overly keen on the female backing vocal repeats, but loved her "Who?" in response to Ice Cube!

  7. I can't publish my comments on this show at all! It just refuses each time! Oh well...

    1. I sympathise as I had the same problem about six months ago. I had 15 goes at ctitiquing a certain show then just gave up. Either my PC or this blog's just changed, as the font in the comments box is different and at least three times bigger.

  8. So will tonight go off with a bang? Yes it will with The Little Angels. My little brother was a fan of this lot and may well have led to his love of drumming. Really enjoyed that. Careful with that broken string lad, you'll have someone's eye out 😮

Vintage Stoned Men with the charts. Big leap for Charles and Eddie, I wonder where that's headed?

Shakespeares Sister return. 1992 turning out to be a great year for them. Siobhan dressed as a rag doll tonight. Haven't heard this one since it's original chart run and I quite liked it. Quirky. Must check out the album at some point.

Boss Drum! Great remix this one. Might be my favourite Shamen tune. Right up my street this.

The Rockingbirds covering RSF for charity. Why not. Indie does Charity like nobody else. Possibly the most bizarre thing we've had so far this year.

    Breakers;
    Metallica: standard heavy metal
    En Vogue: pure class
Charles and Eddie: lying to you
    Erasure: nice video

Arrested Development on video and amazed and delighted this made Number 2. Wonderful tune.

EXCLUSIVE! INXS! Wouldn't call my myself a fan but always seem to like their records and this is no exception. They seem to have a knack for a memorable hook in the chorus. Good performance as well.

Boyz still at the top and we get the dull film promo video.

  9. Little Angels: guitarist in red looking red faced as his guitar string breaks. Sounds like a more blues rock Def Leppard. They do look to be enjoying themselves, anyway.

    1. Strolling Bones, no audience to be seen but this might be TOTP pre-record footage from the 70s. Song's OK, but I don't really need to hear about Mick Jagger's romp with a lady of the night.

Shakin' Stevens' Sister: This is actually really good and deserved a better chart placing, but I guess people were tired of them by now. Atmospheric verses and stirring chorus.

The Shamen: Still with the sepia videos. Solid, propulsive chorus saves this one, thanks to the usual tongue twisting lyrical speed. Now do She Sells Sea Shells.

The Rockingbirds: this must have been the highest profile exposure they ever got! Odd to lead with such a bog standard cover (albeit country and western-fied) when the St Etienne cover was so nuts and far more interesting.

Breakers all familiar except Metallica, not bothered about that one, then the Arrested Development video, but we've heard this one too.

This week's exclusive is INXS, not the best track of that album but it's a fairly acceptable rock run through. Didn't seem to do much for its chart position, mind.

Boys II Men send us to sleep with the clip-heavy video.

    2. It worked! The sticking point seemed to be the alternate word for "lady of the night", very prudish, this new comments system.
