  1. Anything would be an improvement over the last episode, but this is still shaky. Elayne obviously very nervous and not enjoying herself, no wonder she didn't stick around.

The JAMMs, as they were before they were The KLF, with a high concept dance record that succeeds on vinyl (or CD) but this performance just makes them look stupid, moody Morris dancers and all. I'd rather have seen the video. Think they left off the sheep at the end, too.

Tim Finn has a sarky rejoinder to all that ("It's grim down south!") and then launches into one of Crowded House's trademark midtempo, tasteful but a bit dull dinner party songs. Well put across, but painfully unexciting.

K-Klass, with their K-Lass who can actually sing, though for some reason has a hairdo like your gran's. Yeah, this is OK, really needed a Guru Josh-style woodwind performer for the main hook, though.

Belinda Carlisle, not one of her best, those lyrics are unbelievably hackneyed and she can do very little with them. Not surprised this stalled. Also, the gloom it is presented in looks more ominous than moody.

INXS with Shahnin' Stawe, or that's the way Mike pronounces it, pretty uninspired unless you were one of the legion of his female fans the video appears to be pandering shamelessly to.

Control - are you not staying, luv? Studio a bit parky, is it? Did they pluck you out of the audience to sing? All very in one ear, out the other.

Neil Sedaka looking like someone's elderly relative at Christmas (the jumper!), or maybe Mrs Mills, as the audience visibly take the piss, checking their watches, bobbing their heads sarcastically, waving at themselves on the monitor, etc. Wouldn't he be happier on daytime TV?

Finally, to brighten things up, the amusing video for Dizzy which is deeply daft and a breath of fresh air. You could see they were trying to recreate it in the studio a couple of episodes ago. A chart topper that meets with my approval.

    1. I quite liked new presenter Elayne Smith, despite the wrong spelling of her first name, but she had the kind of cuteness only associated with Jenny Powell as previous TOTP presenter, and not sure how many more episodes she will be doing, but a welcome breath of fresh air to the presenters roster.

The JAAMs I don't remember as a name of a group, as I only remember as song title for The KLF with Tammy Winette the following year, and not sure how this one It's Grim Up North passed me by on the M1 or M6. Will need to check out the video to see if it is as good as a KLF video, as the JAMMs seemed to be a spinoff band of The KLF.

Great that Neil Sedaka still performs to this day, at the age of 82. This new 1991 TOTP performance as 'Album Track' did not chart in the Top 75 Singles chart, so effectively his UK chart career still ended in early 1975 peaking at No.35 with 'The Queen of 1964'!

    2. I think actually she only has 2 shows which is rather a shame. She was rather hesitant and made some mistakes but I found her gauchness rather sweet. She has a beautiful smile which can only be a good thing for a TV presenter. Shame she wasn't allowed to settle in over several shows. Maybe she decided she didn't want to do anymore. Still respect to her for agreeing to have her shows repeated and thanks to that we get to see the last 2 KLF studio appearances! Justified and Ancient is another Elayne edition. America What Time Is Love video I think will also get shown.

    3. The JAMMS were actually the original incarnation of The KLF and I think it's under that name that they released the '1987' LP then the album '1987: The Edits'. The story behind those are just fantastic and hilarious reading. Detailed in a book about them by John Higgs.

    4. I think you're right about Elayne Smith's reaction to TOTP presenting, as she discussed it about three years ago in 2018 on BBC Sounds, saying she was 'completely rubbish' and only got three shows before they revamped TOTP again. Here's her short interview on BBC Sounds:

  2. Oh fuck, I spoke too soon about them jettisoning the pre release and album track segments, huh?

JAMMs - I have a soft spot for most of the KLF releases in this era, but this one is just shit. And they've missed plenty of places out although both my hometowns get a shout out.

Crowded House - Bless them for that little opening joke. This isn't my favourite of their hits but it's a nice performance.

Top 10 sees Bryan still at number 4, not sure how.

Mark's presenting is improving a bit, he reminds me of Mark Goodier. I hate Mark Goodier, mind, but it's a start. Elayne seems OK but nervous. Nice to see some other people on the presenting roster.

K Klass - Great track and one of the more successful live versions of a dance record we've had.

Belinda Carlisle - I like her but I'm still not here for pre releases. They should have saved this for when it actually charts.

INXS - They saved me having to YouTube the video, which was kind. The actress I'm reminded of is Kat Stewart, but I think she would have been too young. Ah well.

Control - not a great live vocal, although it improves as it goes on. The singer is dressed like a Byker Grove extra. The mumsy dancers seem out of place.

Breakers - four of them! Wow!

Metallica - there's a reason it's not as well loved as Nothing Else Matters and Enter Sandman.

Chris Rea - and people think Christmas comes early these days, huh? It's still ruddy Autumn, mate.

Manics - This is more like it.

Charlatans - I like them but this isn't one I remember so well.

Neil Sedaka - The Manic Street Preachers are in the charts aand yet we're treated to this sludge that isn't even a single???? I usually have a no fast forward rule for TOTP, I never even FFed 17 ruddy showings of Bryan . But this one I had to zoom past about half way through. After all, it's not in the charts so it doesn't count.

Dizzy - the video's fun but you're telling me that Vic Reeves and the Wonderstuff were really too busy to be in the studio for being at number one???

    1. The Crowded House 'grim down south' opening line to their own single was to prove that the show was live, and that both groups were placed adjacently on the same roster.

Previous to now, the only INXS video I liked was Suicide Blonde which is snugly in my iTunes pop video collection for some time now, but I'm pleased to have purchased this Shining Star video today, as I don't recall it in 1991, but like it now in 2021, with iTunes still selling all the INXS videos present-day.

Neil Sedaka would have been a staple of our parents generation, having had his first single in the UK in 1959 when he was 20 years old, so you could be forgiven for calling it sludge, but the older generation now in their 70s, would have probably loved anything new that Sedaka churned out, even in 1991, as he was 52 on this new single, and still invited to the TOTP studio to perform it!

    2. You hate Mark Goodier, Rad?! I kind of know what you mean, although he reinvented himself in the 90s as the indie DJ of choice on Radio 1, I always remembered him saying how Bros were the best thing ever when he started on the station and had trouble taking him seriously. Now he's strictly MOR.

    3. Rad, which were / are your two home towns mentioned in those JAMMs lyrics? A Facebook friend of mine was ecstatic her birthplace of Nantwich got a shout out.

    4. Grimsby is where I grew up and Sheffield is where I've lived since I was 18 :)

    5. @THX I just found his chirpy persona way too much. I was definitely happier with the Whiley/Lamacq evening session than his version.

  3. Chart rundown (in the absence of one):

    No.8 K-Klass - Rhythm Is A Mystery
Although it came in as a new entry at No.8 and a TOTP studio performance to celebrate this achievement, it was actually a re-release having peaked at No.61 about six months earlier in May. Not quite sure how it suddenly came in as a new entry at No.8 at second attempt, so I find it quite puzzling to say the least.

    No.17 Mariah Carey - Emotions
OK I know she appeared in the studio a couple of weeks earlier while at No.1 in America simultaneously, but she was still going up two weeks later, so she could have at least got the video shown this week, so you could say she was a little unlucky not to get a second play this week while still rising up the charts.

No.19 England World Cup Rugby Squad - Swing Low
New entry at No.19 this week, and not even a Breakers slot. Good Lord, this new TOTP format is not as generous as the old format, which would have had them on the show or with their video by now. Hope they get on the show next week!

    No.37 - Zoe - Lightning
No move for her since last week's TOTP studio performance at No.37, so it seemed she was going nowhere fast.

  4. Another new presenter this week. Elayne Smith given the nerve-wracking task of being the introductory voiceover. In days of older she might've had a friendly welcome from Kid Jensen just before the previous edition's playout. Not here. Straight into it and her nerves show straight away, coming in about 5 seconds too early and mispronouncing the name of the opening act. Who are quite a major opening act.

So it's The KLF back again reverting to their original name of The Justified Ancients Of Mu Mu and another hugely memorable appearance. At 6th form one test of how switched on to current music you were was how many place names on this single you could say in the correct order. 'Hali-Fax' still cracks me up.
The Morris dancers are given a foundation level stick dance to perform so they could just be from a casting agency but the look of cheerful bemusement from one or two suggest they were proper Morris dancers. Cressida (I presume it's her) standing intimidatingly still and wearing a helmet that Spike Milligan might've worn. Quite astoundingly stupid and their 3rd classic in a row and equally extraordinarily they are about to get even better.

How do you follow that? That seems to have run through Neil Finn's mind as the camera pans across as he draws "It's Grim Down South". Crowded House have indulged in madness on stage so I'd like to think it was complimentary or maybe he was irked at Mark calling them Australian. Beautiful single still with a touching chorus. Welcome guys. Can't wait to see them during the 'Together Alone' period.

A fine show this is turning out to be. One of my favourites of 1991 next. Just love how sad and understated this sounds while still being firmly dance. So many hooks all of them memorable and exquisitely sung too.

Elayne appears on screen. Awww she's lovely. You do your link however you want. A little nervously but never mind. To Belinda Carlisle and another favourite of the year. The lyrics are Eurovision standard but the melody absolutely soars. She's good at this. Even manages a lens breaking yell at the end. Gorgeous.

INXS video again with Michael looking louche and a subplot of pompous middle aged men running into glamorous girls and we're given the challenge of deciding which is the more objectionable.

Control giving off key Rave u Like for a few minutes then the breakers. Metallica get a few seconds, ditto Chris Rea, ditto..Manics? Had no idea that did so well but welcome. Always good to see them in their early guise.
Bought The Charlatans single on cassette but probably only because I didn't get round to buying 'Over Rising' which is far better.

Neil Sedaka; The old insane gear change. Heartening that that's survived the revamp. One or two in the audience exchanging "who is this old duffer?" expressions.

Another new No. 1 in two weeks. Still funny and loveable. Forgotten how seriously into it Bob gets.

Mark and Elayne together at the end and Mark doesn't offer much encouragement to his new co-presenter. "Same frequency!" she brightly says at the end and immediately displays more personality than he's shown in the previous few weeks.

  5. Kick out/ off with the JAMs.
Completing a (personal) trilogy with The Fall’s earlier The North Will Rise Again and Hit the North. Their first release as the Justifieds since the 1987 classics Down Town, All You Need Is Love and Whitney Joins the JAMS. Originally recorded with the Sinful Pete Wylie doing vocal duties the previous year.

K-Klass, what a vocal. Probably my favourite vocal dance track of the period along with N-Joi’s Anthem. K-Klass are still going strong thirty years on, on the bill at the recent Hacienda Classical gigs for example.

Manic Street Preachers, as Rad says above, shame they weren’t allowed to crash into the studio with this one instead of Neil Sedata. We’ll have to wait until early 1992 for their debut studio punk’d up appearance.

Charlatans, this one passed me by, released between two classics Over Rising and Weirdo. Their debut single, Indian Rope, had also been re-released in the summer. Another case of debut single turning out to be the finest work?

    1. Don't know about The Charlatans' debut being their best, it's a great record but so was Come Home Baby from a few years back, such a great song.

    2. Would've been fantastic to have seen the Manics do that in the studio. Again can't believe that made the Top 30 though it is a great tune. I think they were due to do it when they appeared on 'The Word' but at the very last moment went into 'Repeat' instead. Definitely not one for 'Totp' that number.

    3. Just checked the lyrics for "Repeat". Altogether with the chorus! :-D

  6. Some tunes peaking outside the Top 40 this week and unlucky not to get to the TOTP stage:

    Stevie Nicks - I Can't Wait
For what, prey tell? With Fleetwood Mac's final single release already over a year ago in the summer of 1990, Nicks was now on her second solo single, and this was the first to fail to reach Top 40, but the video was strong and expressive, playing a character in solitary confinement:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYrgcUojxLE

No.51 - Adamski ft Future Freak - Never Going Down
Erm no, a new entry for him this week went down the following week, and this first single in a year since Flashback Jack also flopped outside the top 40 in late 1990 was proof that he could no longer command a Top 40 position since Seal effectively sealed off his future solo efforts after Killer reached No.1 for Adamski, and despite collaborating with newcomer Future Freak on this new one who was no Seal:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTioII7FAfY

No.53 - DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince - Ring My Bell
Eagerly awaited follow-up to the summer debut hit Summertime, this really could not cut it with the public, despite the Anita Ward sampling and summer video in the wintertime, this should really have been released in the summer:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLtw3yzq2HE

No.60 Amy Grant - That's What Love Is For
First single not to break the top 40, and the same trend would continue until 1995 when she finally succeeded to break through again, so we will not be seeing anything in the TOTP fold for Amy Grant until 1995.

    1. Stevie Nicks single was first released in 1986 it got to number 16 in the US but only 54 in the UK.

I think it was re-released because of a greatest hits album.

  7. Right, so some insignificant ponce who thinks he’s now too big for his past succumbs to Mike Smith Wanker Syndrome and refuses to sign up for his 15 TOTP episodes to be shown. The only good thing is that it means we get through The Dorky Years eight weeks quicker if we’re lucky.

It’s 50% of the TOTP output of Elaine ‘Lispy’ (or should that be “Lyspy”?) Smith. No Dorky – hallelujah!

Ay up! A peaen to above the East Midlands. No underage dancers, or Morris minors, there. Tee hee.

Crowded House, Australian? We should be thankful that Paper Round Boy didn’t call them amphibian by mistake. Neat improvised intro and two tone guitar there, Neil. Not too sure about the lyric “I’m moving inside her”, though. Apart from that, a gentle and lovely song.

No reduced rundown video for K-Klass, who give us rave pop with way more lyrics than the norm so well done.

First pointless turn next as chartless Belinda does a song so formulaic it could have been written by computer.

    INXSFF next.

Control, all the way from... Manchester. Wow! Mister One Finger on keyboards, ecstasy given first nod in the lyrics whose lines mostly end in ‘ee’. This was purgatoree.

Mark, look at the camera after announcing the breakers instead of looking sideways and bored, you tit.

Four briefers rather than breakers next, though Chris Rea’s song, which has ripped off the rhythm of at least two of his other hits and is quite forgettable, gets most airtime. Metallica’s vocalist inspires Nickleback (the bastard), Charlatans with Brian Cox on vocals, and those Manics look a livewire lot. Careful of them.

Neil Sadaka wins Outfit Of The Re-Runs. Was that jumper a bet? Apart from that, his three minutes of gloop was the second pointless non-top 40 studio turn of the night.

Chart summit recahed by the County Durham Austin Powers. Shame this was The Wonder Stuff’s only number one. What would have Bass Thing thought? Talking of thoughts, are the washing machines in the video made by Whirlpool, hence a pun on the chorus’s lyrics?

    2. Having chaccked the Popscene website, nNone of Shrinking Rose’s episodes are consecutive.

      For 1991 they are Nov 28 and Dec 19, for 1992 they’re Jan 02, Jan 16, Feb 06, Feb 27, Mar 19, Apr 16, May 07, May 21, Jun 13 (a Saturday), Jun 25, Jul 09, Aug 27 and Sep 17.

As well as the Nirvana “Teen Spirit” classic, we’ll miss “Motorcycle Emptiness”, excellent tracks by Inspiral Carpets, The Levellers, Roy Orbison and Swing Out Sister plus four of The Wedding Present’s nine appearances when they released a new single each month of the year. The one good thing is we’ll miss a TOTP in Feb 1992 which consisted of five acts in the top 12 and videos for seven songs which were hits in 1991 and shown as nominees for The Brits!

    3. That's right Inspirals 'Dragging Me Down', two Manic Street Preachers performances won't be on as well as some great satellite things. I tentatively looked to see if Tori Amos 'Crucify' will be on the no show list and aaah it is! This chap certainly had some good stuff to present.

    5. i really got into crowded house for a few years in the 90's, and always thought this one of their finer efforts - especially the way it goes all hazy at the end. the title is a reference to a rather dubious sexual act (along with the line "you let your tears rain down on me"). it seems the finns had a prediliction about that sort of thing, as CH's previous album's title "temple of low men" also alluded to that in a manner frankie howerd might have envied

  8. The ITV Chart Show following this episode of TOTP, had perfect predictions for The Justified Ancients Of Mu Mu (JAMMs) and the Kylie/Keith duet, placing them at No.10 and No.4 respectively on the Chart Show Top 10, which was indeed to be their positions on the official BBC chart the following week:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rshUhPi-DYA

It gave us a chance to see the JAMMS video depicting the stereotype of heavy rain up North and black&white video to display no colours. Boy did that video look 'grim'. OK we get the point.

According to the captions, Kylie never met Keith Washington, cos Pete Waterman sent her part on tape to New York for Keith Washington to add his part of the video. Similar scenario to Julio Iglesias & Stevie Wonder's video earlier in the year that reached No.5.

However, The Chart Show wrongly predicted Don McLean in a Top 10 position at No.9, whereas he stalled at No.12 on the official chart, but at least we got the whole video shown. Also first glimpse of the K-Klass video which was not seen on TOTP.

Not their best remix work I have to say. I used to love listening to Andy doing his weekly Manchester Sunset Spinmasters radio show then popping down to Eastern Bloc Records to nervously ask for his recommended vinyl.

    3. Astro is the one who had main lead vocal on Rat In Mi Kitchen, as a change-up from the usual Campbell brothers, but his best moment came on the middle section of the song Johnny Too Bad from 2:33 until 3:30 on this video:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nsIuEXNR4M

This was one of the greatest minutes of pop history, which will always be gold when looking back at UB40's catalogue. The rap was a singalong which is what made it so unique, any one of my favourite memories of UB40.

Last week they were showing Carry On Christmas episodes from 1969-1973 where the film cast did some special TV shows for Christmas, so last week the channel had Kenny Everett and Carry On Christmas, so my how we were spoiled.

That's TV Gold seems to be ITV shows of yesteryear, as opposed to UK Gold which has been around for years showing BBC shows of yesteryear.

  12. Late watching this one. Was it worth the wait? Not really. Liked the new hostess though.

Justified Ancients of Mu Mu – It’s grim up North – Band title doesn’t really roll off the tongue. Cheerful song too.

Crowded House – Fall at your Feet – Fans of James Blunt will know that he included a cover of this song in his early set to pad it out a little…and not a bad version it was either. Judie Tzuke also covered it.

    K-Class – Rhythm is a Mystery – A bit insipid I thought.

Belinda Carlilse – Do you feel like I feel – At first I thought this was a Frampers song title, but no, that was ‘Do you feel like we do’. Close. As for this, it’s on the ‘Best of Belinda’ but it’s not really.

Inxs – Shining Star – Still going? I thought INXS done by now… yawn!

Control – Dance with me – Not the track from Englebert Humperdinck’s ‘The Last Waltz’ album…but not much good either.

Breakers – None really grabbed me, not even Chris Rea. But there again the clips were soooo short.

Neil Sedaka – Miracle Song – Enjoyed this. It was actually released as a single and on the picture sleeve he’s wearing exactly the same jumper! I recall two things about Neil. 1) An interview with him where he stressed that his surname was Sedacker not Sedarker. 2) In 1972 he suddenly popped up in the charts with ‘Oh Carol’ reaching No19 in December of that year…in company with the stars of that era David Cassidy, 10CC and, er, Jeff Beck.

I’m not even going to mention the No1. Second duffer in a row! Come back Bryan.

    1. Big thumbs up then all round for new presenter Elayne Smith, and pity she only got two shows to present in total.

Neil Sedaka's final single in the UK came in 1975 when he managed a mere No.35 peak with The Queen Of 1964, so this new 'Album' appearance on this 1992 TOTP show did not spawn a single from it, and so 1975 was his final swansong in the UK charts, and Neil will be 83 in March.

  13. JAMMs - like them in general but this is not their best. Pretty dull.

Crowded House - pleasant but ploddy..

KKlass - in tune for a change, but another dull live delivery of a dance tune.

Belinda Carlisle - don’t remember this. verse a bit too laid back, and the chorus doesn’t quite take off..(I suspect the actual recording would be more lively)

INXS - sounds like a demo recorded on a cassette during a song writing rehearsal… dull again

Control - back to the rubbish vocals, over a rubbish tune

    Breakers
    Metallica - typical grunge tune
Chris rea - pleasant enough what we heard…
    Manics - typical manic fare
Charlatans - pleasant enough what we heard…

Neil Sedaka - the word of the week is… dull

  14. Whose voice ia that drifting through the studio... that's not Dortie?

KLF up first. Such an odd mess of a song this is. Not sure if I'm a fan of this or not. What's with the merry men. Angels, church organs. WW1 soldiers.
We should check if the North ever rose again

It's not that Grim in Australia Neil. Nice ad-lib though. One of their more mellow tunes compared to all their usual mellow tunes.
Why do all Crowded House songs sound the same.

That female voice is back again to introduce K Klass. Never realised this was a top ten hit but glad it was as it's a great dance tune. Amazingly our first dance track with a decent vocal on the new look TOTP. Result.

Elayne is here! Oh Dear. did they just drag thrse presenters off the streets? They can't seriously of auditioned people and picked this lot.

Here's Belinda again and she's changed her gloves. A minor hit but a goodie. Live music as well as vocals. Like.

This weeks video is INXS. Saw enough of this last week thanks. Rubbish video. What's the guy in the suit done to annoy everyone?

Another dance tune. This one nowhere near as good as K Klaas and I think it falls back down the chart next week probably thanks to the appalling vocal performance. Knew it couldn't last.. She knows she's not sticking around, still got her coat om.

    Metallica. Nope. Not for me.
Chris Rea.. don't remember this. It's ok.
The Manics early indie phase. Much like everything else at the time.. doesn't stand out.
Breakers jingle is annoying isn't it.
    Chalatans.. average from them.

Come on Elayne, whole sentences please!

WTF. Its 1991 not 1958..go away Sedaka.
Every time i think its finished..it goes on..
    That was terrible.

Completely forgot this went to Number One. Storming tune. Great video. Just show this and never have them back in the studio. Fabulous stuff.

Some good and bad stuff tonight but the show still seems to lack coherence and energy and that is all down to the presenters unfortunately..

    It's Grim In Elstree.

    1. Neil Sedaka's singles catalogue in the UK charts went from 1959 to 1975, and nothing of his made it into the Top 75 since then as far as I know.

    2. 1958 was a guess but thanks for the clarification. No idea why they felt this was a good idea. Light Entertainment must have been in charge this week.

    3. Well he is 82 now, and apparently still performing, so will no doubt be up for some new offers to perform his back catalogue, and of course any new material if still producing some.
