Bizarre Inc - fantastic start to the show. Such A Feeling I had that the TOTP studio had now become a clinical dance factory or nightclub on this performance alone, when you consider the same London TV studio housed Pans People and Legs & Co in the 70s TOTP!
ReplyDeleteRoxette - love the new video, although I don't remember this one at the time among all their other hits.
Cliff Richard - unlike David Bowie, Cliff relished all the opportunities to perform in the TOTP studio across three decades, and now aged 50 on this performance, there seemed to be no letting up. Good Lord, how long could he keep it going?
Marky Mark & The Funky Bunch - ok so they are at peak position this week at No. 14, but they went on to take the American No.1 spot the following month for two weeks in October 1991.
Bryan Adams - a new entry at No.25, while his other hit was 10th week at No.1, and still had another 6 weeks at the top spot, so this second single was to fall out of the top 40 while the other one was still at No.1. Strange goings on!
Right Said Fred - fourth showing on TOTP, and probably a record number of showings for a song not getting to No.1, they get the playout slot at their fourth week at No.2, and as Angelo puts it nicely, too sexy for No.1!
I'll raise you, Dory.... in the first four months of this re-run, in 1976, Jesse Green was on four times (the last three being repeat studio turn showings) for "Nice And Slow", which only peaked at number 17.
DeleteI also remember The FPI Project at the end of 1989 and beginning of 1990 getting four studio appearances, two of which were repeated, and that didn't get to No.1 either. I guess since 1985 when TOTP was shortened to a 30-minute show, if you got two showings during your chart run, you would be doing really well.
DeleteYep you're right Dory. I was going to mention the same thing. 'Cant Stop This Thing We've Started' must have the unique achievement of being released, going all the way up to its peak position in the charts and all the way out again during the whole time that the previous release was at No.1. Astonishing.
DeleteAlso I was listening to Pick of the Pops just now and they played this week in 1978. Fantastic hour. Gambo said that the 2 Grease No.1s amounted to 16 weeks at the top so 'Everything I Do' was No.1 as long as those 2 mega hits put together!
I also listened to Pick Of The Pops today for that October 1978 chart. Just loved it when Sweet Talkin' Woman came on at No.17, Kiss You All Over by Exile, and Lucky Stars by Dean Friedman in the Top 10, and when you have two Grease songs in the Top3, well that is the icing on the cake!
DeleteYes sone great things played. Sweet Talkin' Woman's my favourite ELO single and I've always had a very soft spot for Can't Stop Loving You. It sounded particularly beautiful and touching with the rain hammering it down outside.
DeleteI still have the pleasure of listening to that Pick of the Pops 1978 chart - will certainly be checking it out this week...some great tunes to look forward to.
DeleteMeanwhile, repeat performances...anyone remember Gillan and 'New Orleans'? Only reached No17 but was on the chart for 10 weeks and on the show a fair number of times!
I always find it interesting on the Pick of the Pops shows what gets played in the top 20….and what doesn’t get played. Years back in the Tom Browne / Simon Bates era they played the whole lot (albeit some cut short) with the only exceptions being banned singles such as anything by Judge Dread, ‘Love to love you Baby’ and ‘God save the Queen’ etc. Nowadays, they’d have to exclude a lot more for other reasons, e.g. anything by Gary Glitter or Rolf Harris. Although ironically Donna Summer would probably get played now!
DeleteFrom this excellent 1978 chart they de-selected ‘Hong Kong Garden’, ‘A Rose has to Die’, ‘Picture This’, ‘Jilted John’ and ‘Three times a Lady’. None of these have any undesirable connotations that I could think of but were probably cut for timing reasons. I could happily have listened to all of those with the exception of Jilted John.
I would imagine that the DJ can choose which ones to leave out in order to get about 15 out of 20 songs in an hour, so Gambo played Status Quo at No.20 having fallen from N.14, while The Dooleys having been higher up the charts at No.16 having only fallen three places, you would think that The Dooleys should have got played ahead of Quo.
DeleteMe, Mum and Dad and my sister gathered to listen to a pick of the pops two years ago which was the chart from Mum and dad's wedding (20/9/69). Very fortuitous as it was the day after their 50th anniversary party. Fantastic chart but they missed out 'My Cherie Amour' which we were all looking forward to!
DeleteWhat a great 1969 top20!...although a few I'm not keen on. No1 'Bad Moon Rising' was one of those songs I heard on an MFP covers album first before hearing the vastly superior Creedence Clearwater Revival original. No4 was 'Je'taime' - I expect that didn't get played in 1969 but would have been now.
Deletesct, from memory, only three non-banned singles were omitted in the Tom Browne era - "Bionic Santa" by Chris Hill (still top 20 in late January!), "King Of The Cops" by impersonator Billy Howard (apparently cut for timing reasons) and "Let's Do The Latin Hustle" by The M&O Band (banned from the shops as they'd illegally done a "Bird's Eye Chicken Pie" with the backing of Eddie Drennon's original version).
DeleteSct, yes it was great to hear. A real extra treat after the party. Two classic wedding songs in there; My Cherie Amour and It's Getting Better. Dad particularly was tickled by the fact that Bad Moon Rising was their wedding No.1! If they'd been married a week earlier their wedding No.1 would've been one of his least favourite records, In The Year 2525 by Zager and Evans (I love that record though). Certain years I just would skip everything if possible to catch. It should be a law to broadcast one chart from 1967 every September!

DeleteStaying firmly off (1991) piste S9orry Angelo), there is a fabulous 1966 Pick of the Pops show still up on the BBC Radio 2 website for listening.
DeleteSome wonderful tunes....'God only Knows', 'Eleanor Rigby', 'Walk with Me', 'Too soon to Know', 'Distant Drums' and....one of my all time favourite singles....'All I see is You' by Dusty Springfield...
I listen to Pick Of The Pops on the BBC Sounds app, which is BBC Radio's catch-up equivalent to Iplayer for catch-up TV programmes.
DeleteBizarre Inc - Back to the rave and back to the blending video and studio gimmick. Not as good as Playing with Knives. Putting the dancers on stacked TVs is a bit big budget for this show.
ReplyDeleteT Rex - or 'jeans music' as Mayo calls it. Levi's domination will last a few more years but they're going to start using new tracks soon.
Roxette - Hooray for getting a proper play, though shame they're not in the studio. Gah I love this one although we're missing the 'has to be a big thing, it's bringing me to my knees' bridge, which you'd think would be on brand in the year of sex. I also choose to believe this video inspired The Greatest Showman. Per and a bunch of other musicians and singers have a cover of Nothing Else Matters on the Metallica Blacklist Black Album tribute (seems like every album is 30 this year) under the name 'PG Roxette' and I get why he uses that branding, and it's no worse than Queen et al but I still wish he would choose another name or just use his own without the suffix. (Though it is raising money for a charity Marie's family nominated). Just hurry up and release the Joyride 30th boxset and celebrate your own anniversary rather than someone else's, 1992/2022's rapidly approaching.
Sabrina J - She's dressed like a mum but otherwise this is a decent performance and nice to see a live vocal.
Stone Roses - Love this. The Stone Roses and Screamadelica remind me a lot of the drunken fog of my uni days, as even though it was 1998, a friend of mine played them constantly.
Crystal Waters - ooeeoo isn't as good a refrain as ladadiladida. Of her 'other' songs, 100% Pure Love is much better than this.
Cliff Richard - feels so incongruous in this year. I don't remember this one at all and I did my undergraduate dissertation on Cliff (Well on his fans. And on Belle and Sebastian fans.)
Marky Mark - Ooh arty black and white, are we?
Rozalla - one of the most enduring songs of the year and a good studio performance to go with it.
Breakers - Julian Lennon with probably his most memorable hit? Shabba Ranks - doesn't shout 'Shabba' so what's the point?
Double Bryan in a row? Kind of mad how he's got a mega mega number one and yet the follow up is only entering at 25. Also this point can double as Thing to say about that thing 10/16 because it's hard enough to find one thing per episode to say about it without having to have two Bryan comments in a single episode.
Right Said Fred - This has been number 2 for so long the show's just begrudgingly sticking it out over the credits.
Right Said Fred got their reward a few months later for holding on to the No.2 spot in the UK for six weeks, by getting to No.1 in America for three weeks in February 1992 with the same song, so in America, they were not too sexy for No.1!
Deletehi could i recquest some eps of the chart show as im missing any from 1986. 29th may 1987 and 30th october 1987. most of may & june 1988 ( i dont know the dates of those). 17th june 1989, 24th june 1989, 1st july 1989, 8th july 1989, 21st october 1989, 16th december 1989 (copy i have is incomplete). 10th march 1990, 17th march 1990. 24th march 1990, 31st march 1990, 7th april 1990, 21st april 1990, 28th april 1990, 5th may 1990, 12th may 1990, 1990 xmas special and 26th october 1991 along with any other epsoides dateing from 1986 - 1998 many thanks
ReplyDeleteHi Unknown - you're on the wrong post, it's this one for requests: https://angelogravity.blogspot.com/2021/09/uploads-of-pops.html?m=1
Deleteok thanks
DeleteBizarre Inc, here, wait a minute, isn't that one of Oceanic's dancers from last week with them? Hmm. Anyway, kind of finding their feet on this one, but the energy is there.
ReplyDeleteT-Rex we've heard, then on video Roxette with a video that seems a bit unsavoury though I can't put my finger on why. Maybe it's a Swedish thing. As usual, not my cup of tea.
Well, who needs to get their ears syringed when Sabrina Johnson's about? Top of the voice performance (did she need a microphone?) but it's very exciting to hear, very dynamic. It's her moment in the sun and she's going for it.
The Stone Roses, never really got along with this one, far from the most adorable tune ever recorded, and now Ian's gone all anti-vaxxer it's even less easy to enjoy.
Crystal Waters: "She sounds just like a mouse!" Not very sure what this song's about, but it's a middling dance number at least in tune, compared to her previous hit. She got better as she went on, I think.
Unlike Sir Clifford, with the theme tune to a TV show that was supposed to be the new Howard's Way, but ended up the new Albion Market. No wonder with a dreary, faux-inspirational song like this over the credits, Cliff sticks out like a sore thumb here.
Marky Mark, didn't need to hear this again, then a lot brighter, Rozalla, oddly resembling Lesley Joseph, which I didn't remember, but a little ray of sunshine for this upbeat number.
We won't see Shabba and Maxi again, but no great loss, then we will see Bry again (more than once!) and finally Wrong Said Fred with the video again.
Simon displayed a devil may care attitude throughout, almost as if he was saying anything he wanted because he knew he was getting the boot from the show. Can't think why.
Ha, I did wonder why Mayo was off on one in this episode - of course!
Delete'Wrong Said Fred', that really made me laugh!
DeleteBoy Mayo tonight and its au reviour rather than goodbye..see you sometime he said. They obviously knew at this point didn't they.
ReplyDeleteHis shirt much the talk of Twitter last night. Didn't get the Keith? Prowse? link.
BIZARRE INC – Such A Feeling
More dance music that sounds better in a club than on a TV. Such A Good Feeling on it's way as well which is an infinitely better tune.
T-REX with their classic tune back in the charts. Love this.
ROXETTE – The Big L.
Possibly the weakest tune on Joyride gets a single release. It's not bad at all but a bit by numbers for them. Much better before and to follow. Careful with that chain Marie, you'll have someone's eye out.
SABRINA JOHNSTON – Peace
Absolutely belting tune. Fantastic vocal. Just awesome. A dance God tune as well. Different.
THE STONE ROSES – I Wanna Be Adored
I would suggest writing a better tune if you want adoration. Poor.
CRYSTAL WATERS – Makin’ Happy
Not as instantly catchy as Gypsy Woman but I quite like this. It's a bit different to the other dance tunes in the chart so fair play.
CLIFF RICHARD – More To Life
Remember the TV series "Trainer"? Sunday nights BBC One? Replaced Howard's Way?
Nope? Don't worry, this theme tune was the best thing about it. And it's shit. Nice Cliff has come dressed as a jockey though.
Could have done without MARKY MARK again. With or without his FUNKY BUNCH.
ROZALLA – Everybody’s Free (To Feel Good)
Well I always say rozalla. Still no sign of story of 1991 that she was interviewed for last year!.
Great dance tune that's really stood the test of time. Still sounds fresh today. One for every party!
Breakers:
JULIAN LENNON – Beautiful
SHABBA RANKS feat. MAXI PRIEST – bit funky this one.
BRYAN ADAMS – Never has there been a more aptly named follow up single.
BRYAN ADAMS – 10. He's a keen photographer as well and he's had a photo on a Canadian stamp.
RIGHT SAID FRED, time to leave.
Ha, your Bryan Adam new entry comment made me chuckle
DeleteChart rundown - these two tracks got no coverage on TOTP despite entering the top40 rundown, as they were at peak position this week:
ReplyDeleteNo.39 - St Etienne - Only Love Can Break Your Heart
Second single release from this group, and first to break into the Top 40, but not enough depth of chart position to get onto TOTP.
No.40 - The Cult - Wild Hearted Son
First top 40 single for two years since 1989 for this band still going strong since they came onto the scene in 1985, but there was very little left from them, as there next four singles up until 1995 spawned only one top 40 single with a remix of She Sells Sanctuary which got to No.15 in January 1993.
Another great show, hard to believe thirty years have since been and gone.
ReplyDeleteKicking off the show with another techno rave classic from Bizarre Inc. From my home town of Stafford with the female dancer, as I’ve mentioned previously, having attended the same high school as myself. Same dance style and similar outfit to the Oceanic dancer last week THX but on repeat viewing not the same person.
Sabrina Johnston with a bit of Peace. Love this tune, owes a lot of its success to the Brothers in Rhythm remix treatment. For a while I thought I’d seen Sabrina perform this but it turned out to be just a dancer miming on stage whilst Brothers in Rhythm were DJing.
The Stone Roses up next with Adored. Puzzled as to why this was in the charts in 1991, two years after the original release of the Roses debut album. Presume it relates to their winning the court case against their record company Silvertone a few months earlier. This allowed them to walk from their contract so Silvertone recouping court costs with record sales?
Next on to Rozalla, another uplifting classic of a song. Unlike Sabrina, I definitely did see Rozalla perform an end of evening performance at a very sweaty Shelley’s niteclub in Stoke. Presumably on the weekend following this TOTP performance, thirty years.
Simon is the next to take his bow. 2 more of the old stagers remain. Yes he does seem a little distracted but he's had a good continuous run. Amazing change he's overseen in the 5 years he's been on. From It Bites to The Prodigy. What changes have occurred in pop since 2016?
ReplyDeleteBizarre Inc; The rave starts straight away this time with long haired dancers full on bigging up the crowd on TVs and the crowd of course clapping along politely. Good hook to this like most charting rave.
T Rex; Simon doesn't offer any old pop factoid in his introduction but makes a reference to the ad it's from. I bet the ghost of Bolan would've scowled at being part of something as un glam as denim jeans.
Roxette; My sister had 'Joyride' so I do remember it after hearing it again. Per sings and always with a smile in his voice so this is not bad. The one I do recall really liking from the album was 'Watercolours in the Rain'.
Sabrina Johnston; I wonder if Simon's slight detachment comes from knowing he won't be presiding over the revamp with all vocals being live. Certainly if at least one singer a week is as good as this lady then it will be very enjoyable indeed. Totally euphoric dance tune with a storming live vocal. Watching it really was like looking through a portal to a parallel universe.
The Stone Roses; Nothing new from them of course, even a new video, this just being more or less 'Fools Gold' with Ian mouthing different words. Still this was the first single of theirs I bought and my proper introduction to buying indie and on the B side is an absolute treasure called 'Where Angels Play' that they really really should've had as the A side.
Crystal Waters; Lovely eyes. Alright record.
Cliff Richard; So this is the month 'Screamadelica' was released and what is the impact of this seminal album at the time? Motley Crue borrow the band's name for a single and Cliff wears one of Bobby Gillespie's shirts. Actually it's rather noble as a tune and it's appropriate that Simon May wrote it as Cliff seemingly can only sing 'mind' as 'maynd'. So no I don't really maynd this and I can't really mock light Sunday dramas as I had a mild addiction to 'The Darling Buds of May' around the 2nd series because of Primrose.
Marky Mark & The Funky Bunch; Uh huh
Rozalla; Another classic dance single. Wow this blasted out of the radio when this was out. Dressing exactly like in her video I think and she does get the crowd properly dancing, one girl on the steps having her own private rave. Rozalla does a Seal (well partially of course) and removes the jacket to the particular delight of a boorish knob at the front wearing a tie.
Breakers; Julian Lennon takes the caring '90s a few stages further. Beautiful song that people bought but obviously didn't pay much attention to.
Shabba Ranks feat Maxi Priest; Have a guess which one of these two I prefer.
Bryan Adams; Will be on again. Good. I really like that one.
Bryan Adams is followed by Bryan Adams. That must be a one off. Simon gets to mention Slim Whitman in his intro. Thanks say the teens. So Bryan will do things for you that are fairly drastic but he won't delete the record for you after 10 weeks. Can't Kevin of Locksley do some persuading.
So goodbye to Simon for now. Another one I'm sad to see go. 'See you again sometime' he offers. There is no broad smile.
Right Said Fred; Still at No.2! I must've been watching 'The Chart Show' more than this at the time then.
Two singles peaking outside the Top 40 this week and worth mentioning:
ReplyDeleteNo.54 - Rod Stewart - Broken Arrow
After a great start to the year with Rhythm Of My Heart getting three weeks at No.3, the wheels started to come off for Sir Rod, and this one stopping at No.54 had a cracking video with a hottie that I think is Penny Lancaster who he would eventually marry if he hadn't already by then:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9d-BGmHVFa0
No.56 Heart - You're The Voice
A cover of John Farnham's 1987 top 10 hit, this was to be Heart's penultimate single before calling it a day in 1993 with one final single release. You're The Voice was another classic Heart video which many people would probably not have seen before:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQNxrdlk7-g
I didn't even realise they'd covered that!
DeleteHeart's cover of 'You're the Voice' is almost as good as the original and yes, a cracking video. Love it.
DeleteAlso RIP Greg Gilbert who died of cancer a few days ago. I saw Delays at Summer Sundae in 2006 when the brilliant 'Valentine' was the latest single. A fantastic live band with not a trace of rock star posing, just great music with of course the immaculate 'Long Time Coming' that was one of the highlights of that fine pop year of 2004. Should've been way bigger than they were.
ReplyDeleteYeah very sad news, I agree they should have been much bigger, at a time when their guitar band cohorts were riding high in the charts. We’ll have to wait until TOTP 2006 to see their appearance on the show (towards the end of this decade, schedule permitting).
DeleteTwo things to mention before I critique this show tomorrow...
ReplyDeleteFirstly, with thanks to TV Cream for the info, the lyrics for Cliff's single were written by his old chum Mike Read, who'd meant to have been in a new release spot on TOTP in the 60's in the band Esprit De Corps but he got kicked off the show as he wasn't in the Musicians' Union. After decades of trying, he finally had involvement in a hit single.
Secondly, and this dates it.... I played a gig in October 1991 and afterwards the DJ played "Everybody's Free To Feel Good". One of my mates shouted out "What about Terry Waite?"
Haha. And he was released just a month later!
DeleteSimon appears to have a LibDem fascination on this show….reminded me a bit of the reference to a footballer made a number of shows back…can’t recall who it was though.
ReplyDeleteBizarre Inc – Such a feeling – I worried about those two girls prancing about on those very small podiums. Tune a little on the zzz side ,but obviously dance friendly.
T Rex – 20th Century Boy – I’d love to know if any of this mish mash of clips is an actual ToTP performance? I am sure a couple of the bits showing Marc running around are from ‘Born to Boogie’. Anyway, great tune.
Roxette – The Big L – Quirky tune and video but not in the ‘It must have been love’ league.
Sabrina Johnson – Peace – Shouty like Whitney – FF
Stone Roses – I wanna be adored – Pretty lame. What was all the fuss about?
Crystal Waters – Makin’ Happy – FF.
Cliff Richard – More to life – Forgotten this and ‘Trainer’ which starred Susannah York (Dr Helen Dereham from ‘We’ll meet again’) and David McCullum (Carter from ‘Colditz’). I recall these two series much more fondly than ‘ Trainer’. Song a bit of a chugger despite the pen of Simon ‘The Summer of my Life’ May.
Marky Mark – Good Vibrations – No thanks FF
Rozalla – Everybody’s Free – Energetic and engaging performance. Like the way you see her in the background as Simon introduces the next act.
Breakers – Looking forward to hearing more of Julian. Bryan Adams seems to have a song asking about his No1 staying put!!
Bryan Adams – (Everything I do) I do it for you – Wow what a great tune! I prefer this to Slim Whitman’s ‘Rose Marie’. Looking at the UK 45cat entry there are some recent amusing exchanges about this song…perhaps the punters have been tuning in to these repeats! In the past, ToTP have been known to play B Sides but they never gave ‘She’s only happy when she’s dancing (live)’ a spin which, in true B Side tradition, gave equal royalties to the writers…hey one of them was Bryan, but the other; ‘J Valence’ must have been tickled pink!
Right said Fred – I’m too sexy – Sorry guys…you probably did deserve a No1 with this .
"Two girls prancing"! One of them was a bloke. Get your haircut lad!
DeleteKnowing it’s his last show before everything goes tits up, “See you sometime” Si gives us his worst performance, though he still provides some nuggets of hearty info.
ReplyDeleteGreat. More rave. More wobbling musicians and jiggly dancers. I see there’s also a track called “Such A Good Feeling” in the rundown during some proper music.
Why didn’t Roxette call that track “The Big Love”? For some reason this video just left me cold.
Can we have the other Sabrina back instead of this shouter?
Ah. The return of Mister Slappable and his arse mouth.
I prefer Crystal Waters’ second hit to her biggie. I always hear that refrain as "Who are you”? Can you please keep that picture still for a few seconds?
A superb Cliff impersonation by Si for a song which fell at the first fence. It dropped down the chart the next week.
A quick FF for No-Mark.
The first time we see Rozalla this year. She was interviewed for “The Story Of 1991” and mentioned it on her Twitter account. Months back. Hardly worth showing it now, if they ever think of doing so, as the damage is about to be done.
Sounds like a John Lennon tribute act next.
“Housecall”? Is that a song about a bingo session?
We get virtually the run-off groove of Bryan’s new entry.
A resigned Si leads us out with The Freds, who I really wish had toppled Acne Canuck off the chart summit.
Only one more week of proper watching, and then it’ll be like a rodeo... how long will I or any of us stay on and bother watching?
Ah the two songs in the same chart this week with similar names:
DeleteNo.28 - Such A Feeling by Bizarre Inc
No.34 - Such A Good Feeling by Brothers In Rhythm
The latter is a re-release as it was originally released a few months earlier, and peaked at No.64 first time round, so now it got a Top 40 listing for Brothers In Rhythm. I beg to differ with you Arthur, in that I prefer the Bizarre Inc record, even though it was without the word 'Good' in the song title.
In fairness, Dory, Bizarre Inc weren't the worst offenders to my ears when it came to that there rave stuff.
DeleteThe interesting thing about the revamp is that while the format suggested all change with its rave theme tune and new presenters, the charts actually went all over the place at that time with very established acts making a return. In the first two months of the new look, Don McLean, Diana Ross and Slade appear. The presenters might make it hard work although I do remember Mark Franklin being very good.
DeleteBizaarre inc - not the worst dance track we have had, but missing a certain je n’est ce quoi. It took me a while to realise the dancer on the right was a bloke!
ReplyDeleteTrex - still classic. Always popular when we play this in the band.
Roxette - another catchy tune. Big enough backing band!
Sabrina johnston - and another good one. Fair set of lungs on her!
Stone roses - another great oldie. On a roll tonight…
Cliff - don’t remember this. Not much to say, better than saviours day!
Marky mark - and this week’s turkey… [Loleatta Holloway sampled yet again]
Rozalla - one that still gets played these days. Not my cup of tea, but fair tune.
Breakers
Julian lennon - could have been his dad
Shaba ranks - next
Bryan adams - that was ok…
..ooh and soeaking of…
