  1. 2/47, still not sure which one's the Captain, but they are as ever, drilled to perfection. I laughed out loud at the dialogue at the start "You'd better think about the world!", bless them for being right on. Catchy chorus, silly record, energetic way to begin.

Madonna continues her patchy 90s output with one of her sexpot tunes, it was about this time she put out the Sex book, but this video is a lazy edit of previous hits in cliched black and white. If someone started talking like this to you in real life you'd be really embarrassed.

The Farm, funny to think this was a contender for the Christmas Number 1, but didn't make the Top 3. Anyway, a bit of Pachelbel's Canon as inspiration and away you go, lads, one year-defining hit, even if it is about the World War 1 Christmas Day truce football match.

MC Hammer must have been making a mint to afford a Prince sample - didn't the Purple One come down like a ton of bricks on Arrested Development for Tennessee? Anyway, a hint of Ham's religious beliefs here, appropriate he's on the same show as Cliff.

Oh, speak of the Dev- well, not the Devil, but here's the other Christmas hit from Harry, the one you never hear, mostly because it's utterly undistinguished. That can't be TV presenter Charlotte Hindle in the choir, can it?

Gawd, I hope that Phil Collins live LP was better recorded than the video clip.

New Blocks of vomit-inducement as they release their Christmas single on an unsuspecting world, dear me this was pure treacle and wouldn't have fooled anyone with both its eyes on the bank balance. I forgive you, now, Cliff.

Vanilla Ice in the studio, funny what major sales boosts will do, and he's about as well-drilled as 24/7. All very professional, but difficult to be objective about this one so far after the fact.

Betty Boo, I recognised it once she got going, and there's an amusing Bond spoof video, but for some reason she sings more than raps instead of the other way around. Doesn't help.

    1. Interestingly, Betty Boo's Performance of 24 Hours on 3/1/91 Happens when the single is at 29, Lower than it's peak of 25 meaning it shouldn't have appeared on Top Of The Pops but clearly New Year Hangover was at play as the only other studio performance is Deal with Crazy.

    2. Was it pre-recorded a few weeks before because they thought it would be a bigger hit, or was it a new performance and they were desperate to fill the slots?

    3. Captain Hollywood is the lead black singer on 24/7, and he was to go on to his own solo fame as The Captain Hollywood Project in the 1992-1994 period with some momorable classics like More & More:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-rS174AUT0

As we say goodbye to 24/7 with this second of only two hits as Angelo correctly mentions, let's say hello to Captain Hollywood, as his journey is only starting here as a feature on 24/7, with 'More And More' to come from the Captain if you will excuse the pun!

  2. Oops, I missed out Snap. I have nothing to say about Snap other than that's a terrible lyric.

    1. TOTP only entered the video after the first minute, where we missed Turbo D's first of three sessions on the video, where he bellow's "Mary, a girl at a party, pretty face, fantasy body, girl was fine, mission - make her mine, before I could speak, she walked right by me; frozen, lost my cool, out of the groove, what's my next move? should I chill, should I follow, heart is pounding, I feel hollow, pause, not for a minute, if she was a pool, I'd jump right in it, so in her path I just stepped, nervous but I still had depth, it didn't matter where she went to , I would be there too....."

All this in the first minute of the video, and TOTP missed this out, maybe due to the feminists not liking it, or just that TOTP only wanted to show the middle section of the video , and not the first and last section. I guess it was a little like a 1990's pre-internet era preview of what would later become Tinder about 20 years later.

Anyway, here's the full video for the regulars on the blog:

    2. I think TOTP just said, don't bore us, get to the chorus for what they showed of Snap, the whole thing used to be played on the radio, and no feminists complained.

    3. I've always had a soft spot for Snap's christmas contribution and whilst the rapped words are indeed not the most chivalrous, it's a suprise that it never crops up in December playlists. In fact I've only ever seen it on one compilation, Virgin's 'Best Christmas...Ever!' from 1993. It's still at Mum and Dad's and usually played every year. Snap feature between Shakin' Stevens and The Waitresses.
I just still love the underlying premise that the immaculate conception occured at a rave and the mix up with a nursey rhyme is very endearing. Great tune too. Actually Sadness Pt. 1 is on that one as well.

  3. Madonna - peaked at no.2 with is but this was the only showing on TOTP as a new entry at no.9 this week, but she went all the way to no.1 in America with this tune a few weeks later for two weeks at the beginning of 1991.

    Main chart rundown -

No.37 peak position for Mariah Carey's second hit Loves Takes Time, and no feature on TOTP, as there were no Breakers this week. The same song happened to be at No.1 in America this week and for a total of three weeks in November 1990, toppling Vanilla Ice with only one week at No.1 in the US at the start of November, so I don't think she was too concerned at making only No.37 in Britain with this new single.

No.35 - one of several Paul McCartney singles released in 1990 which struggled to get into the top 30, and stalling in the 30-40 section in the charts, which proved that he could not get in with the new generation of dance music enthusiasts who preferred Snap, Technotronic, 808 State and others like them. There was to be no feature on TOTP for this new single, as No.35 was the peak for him, and no Breakers section to show off the new single.

Album Chart Top 5 - the Phil Collins video at No.2 was also a new entry on the singles chart this week at No.57, and got no further, so this clip on the album chart top 5 was all we would get to see!

Top 10 rundown - you could say that EMF were unlucky not to get a third invite to the TOTP studio or even a playout slot, as at No.3 for the second week, and last shown when at No.5 a couple of shows before. Instead, TOTP went for Betty Boo for the playout at No.31, where EMF was a lot better tune for the playout at No.3 if there was no room for a main slot for them on the show.

    1. EMF - obviously not as popular with the production team as that FBI Project who kept getting shown doing the rehash of 'Going back to my roots'....

  4. The return of Hey Wow The Chartman as host.

Twenty 4 Seven back with more inch perfect rap line dancing, but I thought the track was a nightmare.

Steady on, Madge! Sub-Donna Summer sounds and a boring quilt of old videos for this promo. Didn’t justify a high chart placing.

I prefer The Farm’s effort to “Pipes Of Peace”. A blue (Everton?) Santa hat on the Mark King instrument height guitarist.

Rev MC in weird red and black kecks. We begin to see and hear his religious beliefs here.

Nothing on the next act, though. CliFF (see what I did there?).

Phil Collins with a sweaty top lip (uurrrgh!) and an early Christmas turkey of a single as Dory pointed out to boot.

Can we please just have twenty seconds of “Healing Hands” and not sodding “Sacrifice” AGAIN?

As far as Snap goes, I think “I’m serious as cancer when I say rhythm is a dancer” is arguably the most repulsive hit lyric ever. The title of this track reminded me of a John Shuttleworth ditty about dining out which starts “Mary had a little lamb, served up with new potatoes”.

KNOB with “This One’s For The Cash-In”, sponsored by Tate & Lyle syrup.

At least Vanilla Ice performed live. Best I can say about this.

Oo! The gorgeous Betty Boo. Ah. Despite more singing than rapping, this sounds like the start of the slippery slope and chart position diminishing returns. Shame it didn’t happen to Mariah Carey instead.

    1. Phil Collins in fact released no further singles after this one, and went into hibernation for about 3 years until he made a comeback in 1993, as his 1990 work at this point went downhill in charting terms, failing to make top 30 in has last few releases, so we will not be seeing him for quite a while on these TOTP reruns, and if we get to 1993 that is.

With regard to Snap, I would say that their lyrics on Mary Had A Little Boy came a close second to the Rhythm Is A Dancer lyrics.
"Mary, a girl at a party, pretty face, fantasy body.....".
Pity that TOTP left out this first minute or so of the video, and instead started at the middle section and Turbo B's second and third paragraphs only.

      Delete
    2. Phil didn’t, but with genesis we will have the excellent “I can’t dance” only a year away.

    3. Oh yes, sorry, the solo work was put aside for the return of Genesis, so that seems to explain the unusual gap in the Phil Collins singles catalogue from this point on.

  5. Very dull edition...

Captain Hollywood - ok - backing track a bit monotonous. Nice dancing...

Madonna - couldn’t be bothered to do a proper video. Not her most tuneful single.

The Farm - nicking a riff from a classical composition, and heard on many a football terrace, like the previous Madonna track there”s not a lot to this.

Mc Hammer - took a while to place the When Doves Fly sample, and yet again tonight, not a lot to it.

Cliff - comes to something when this is the best thing so far...

    Album chart:
Greatest hits being wheeled out for Christmas
Don’t remember ever seeing the Beautiful South video before

Snap - covering Paul McCartney’s Mary Had a Little Lamb?... the sung part was quite good, but the rap felt criwbarred in.

NKOTB - the five star of the 90s - just how many turgid singles did they have, all as immemorable as the next. Sounded like We Are The World...

Betty Boo - nice video, but forgotten the tune already...

    1. It's When Doves Cry (not fly) that is sampled by MC Hammer.

With regard to Paul McCartney's Mary Had A Little Lamb in 1972, it came under the Wings banner, and is currently shown regularly by the Now 70s video channel on Sky and possibly Freeview, which I must admit I had never seen before until a few months ago on this channel. Here's the video, and completely different to Snap, so no cover Charlie:

    2. There was also a funny scene in the 1970 film Carry On Up The Jungle, where Terry Scott who played Tarzan, who was learning how to talk by his new love Jane, was reading out the Mary Had A Little Lamb poem, and mistakenly said "Mary Had A Little Lamb, it's fleas was white as snow........". Jane (Jackie Piper) had to correct him of course.

      Delete
    3. McCartney put out 'Mary Had A Little Lamb' as a backlash at a radio ban of his previous release, 'Give Ireland Back To The Irish' which made number 16, despite no airplay. He also receieved another BBC ban with his next release 'Hi Hi Hi' after a series of drug busts.

      Delete
    4. Just watched the Macca Mary video. Never seen it before. Not very exciting...

      Delete
    5. Wings appeared in the ToTP studio performing 'Mary had a little Lamb'. It's wiped now of course, but I am sure they brought some cute animals along with them. 'The Beatles Story' Radio Broadcast in 1973 had Paul quoted as saying something like "One of my daughters is called Mary so her ears perked up...".

Maybe it was a response to the banned 'Give Ireland back to the Irish' (which had its lyrics printed in 'Disco 45'!).

'Hi Hi Hi' was a double A Side with 'C Moon' which was also featured on ToTP with the band all wearing 'C Moon' T-shirts! I never heard 'Hi Hi Hi' until years later when I bought 'Wings Greatest'. I think it was the lyrics that the BBC weren't keen on....

  6. Some singles that peaked this week outside the Top 40 and were unlucky not to get to the TOTP stage:

No.52 A Better Love - Londonbeat - a flop follow-up after getting to No.2 with their last single, and showing that you're only as good as your last success.

No. 61 Stand And Fight - Peck ft Nigel Benn
Nigel Benn was all over 1990 with his boxing success, and was British sport's most talked about sportsman at the time, and enough to release a single, but was soon in turmoil when he fatally knocked out rival Michael Watson with catastrophic results for Watson who would never be able to fight again.

No.75 - Malcolm McLaren was back with his World Famous Supreme Team Show, with a single called Operaa House, but could only get to No.75 as best position:

    2. Strange coincidence that just a few weeks ago The Guardian did an interview with Charlotte Rampling who starred in 'The Night Porter' which apparently some of the Madonna video was inspired by.
Also for ages I thought she sang 'make love in a tree' the place to place moving of which would be a little far fetched. Maybe it was a particularly dramatic sinkhole.

  9. A slight improvement on last week’s show perhaps, but still littered with tuneless ‘dance’ stuff…and a number one that refuses to budge despite having no discernible tune. A few notes…

Album Charts – What? No Pavarotti? Some good albums here in the top5 plus the Beautiful South and Paul Simon. The clip of Elton at no1 reminds me of (for me) the song of 1990.

Madonna – Justify my Love – Blimey, this video is tame! I am sure that the video was x-rated and sure enough checking on YT it is pretty steamy….so is this some kind of sanitized version? Anyway I quite like this surprisingly….hypnotic and atmospheric…..yeah and saucy! (footnote – I have just read the comments above and can see that this has been covered….but my words were my initial reaction….didn’t realise the ToTP version was cobbled….surprised they went to the trouble).

The Farm – All together now – No credit for the composer of this tune on the record label but it does sound great given the ‘Farm’ treatment….would have been good money at no1 rather than flippin’ Ice Ice Baby…

Cliff Richard – Saviour’s Day – Another Yuletide hit making three in a row (Band Aid 2 in the middle). Apparently it was mooted for 1989 Christmas but other releases were already penciled in. Better late than never.

New Kids on the Block – This one’s for the children – STILL going on?!! I don’t recall any of these hits at all.

Just heard that Jim Steinman has died. RIP king of the bombastic productions. Left us some gems.

    1. Yes, very sad day to hear of Steinman's passing. The BBC News Channel interviewed Bonnie Tyler last night just before the 10 o'clock news, where she was highlighting her gratefulness to Steinman for writing the song for her 1983 UK No.1 called Total Eclipse Of The Heart where she spent 4 weeks at no.1 with it thanks to Steinman agreeing to pen the song for her.

All this outside of his work with Meat Loaf on three Bat Out Of Hell Album's, and writing Read Em And Weep for Barry Manilow:

  10. Some more sad news today, in that Les Makeown, former lead singer of The Bay City Rollers died today at the age of only 65. This only one day after losing Jim Steinman at 73, makes for a sad April week in pop music.

    1. Yeah someone sent me a text about Les. I recall watching a documentary about the Rollers featuring Les where they were trying to track down royalties. Les was pretty upset about it understandably. RIP.

    2. I saw that documentary too, it was excruciating to watch McKeown traipsing around asking where his money was and getting no answer. He should have died a millionaire.

As Mark Radcliffe said on the radio this morning, the Rollers were the biggest band in the world, and yet every single member ended up penniless. Something's not right there, to state the obvious.

  11. Saw Les fronting the Rollers at a '70s tribute show in 2005 at Powderham Castle near Exeter. It also featured the Osmonds, David Essex and David Cassidy. Great memories.

  12. With no TOTP episodes shown this week thanks to the World Snooker Championship live coverage on BBC4, I must say that I was not all that disappointed, as the exciting finish in the snooker watched by millions on TV around the world was just captivating stuff as the defending world champion was knocked out in a deciding frame, well after 10pm, and so well past the TOTP schedule.

I'm still not sure why the BBC have shifted live evening sport from BBC1/BBC2 to BBC4 in recent years, as not only snooker, but also the Wimbledon tennis championships have also been moved to BBC4 in the evenings at the expense of the TOTP reruns, so this problem of cancelled TOTP will be back in a couple of months time when Wimbledon begins.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Just checked the BBC4 schedule for the coming week, and no TOTP scheduled at all for Friday 30th, so it looks like we will have to wait until 7th May to see the 13th & 20th Dec 1990 editions which were originally scheduled for yesterday (23rd April). Good Lord!

      Delete
    2. Actually the episodes scheduled for April 9th were broadcast on the 16th as BBC4 was taken off air following the death of the Duke of Edinburgh. So the episodes that will (hopefully) be shown on May 7th were originally scheduled for April 16th...

    3. In 1985 I was playing badminton with friends whilst the World Snooker Final was being played. "Foregone conclusion" was the general verdict as Steve Davis seemed unbeatable and Dennis Taylor was merely gaining respectability. I used to give some of the guys a lift home as they didn't drive at the time. We decided to stop off at my home en route to see the end of the final as it was looking like going to 17-17. Sure enough it did, so we decided to watch the last frame at my home (with my parents). These guys didn't get home until very late suffice to say, and by the time I drove back home again I crawled into to bed very late. Worth it though. What a win for Dennis!

      Delete
    4. Did you know that the No.1 at the time of the 1985 snooker final was Move Closer by Phyllis Nelson, in only one week at the top spot, and just in time for the Dennis Taylor final.

It's quite interesting that since 1980, the world Snooker Championship has not changed in format or even venue for that matter, and seems to be quite tired looking. I think a whole new revamp and venue are in order, but I don't think it is going to happen anytime soon.

      Delete
    5. One thing has changed however.....no longer the Embassy World Snooker Championship. But yes, look and feel largely rooted in the 80s.

Steve Davis incidentally is a prolific record collector.

    6. The one clear memory I have of our year's leaving disco at primary school in 1986 was of 'Snooker Loopy' being played and a bunch of us together singing the chorus! Pretty sure that my favourite single at that exact time was 'Set Me Free' by Jakki Graham. One of the classic upsets in the World Championship final that year with Joe Johnson defeating Steve Davis.

    7. Joe Johnson is one of the regular Eurosport snooker commentators, and was commentating last night on one of the semi-finals, and in case people prefer the Eurosport coverage rather than the BBC.

  14. 1400 shows! Wow. I seem to remember about 1983 was when I started watching and (with a missing year for back-packing) I would have seen most of these up until about 2001 then drifted away a bit so probably near on 1000 editions I have seen myself.
This would have been in the high 300s for me.

    Watch out.
    Gods about.

TWENTY 4 SEVEN feat. CAPTAIN HOLLYWOOD – Are You Dreaming?
Storming opening to the show. Officially fallen in love with Nance now especially in her red coat. Quality dance routine as well.

    MADONNA – Justify My Love
Entering her moany "ain't I sexy" phase. Hated this at the time and can just about stand it now. Don't think this is the official video. No idea why this did so well.

THE FARM – All Together Now
Just a beautiful record. One of my all time faves.
Far too happy clappy audience though.

    M.C. HAMMER – Pray
The Cliff of Rap is back. This actually isn't too bad surprisingly. Video a bit cheesy though.

    CLIFF RICHARD – Saviour’s Day
Speaking of Cliff and Cheese here comes one of the cheesiest performances ever to grace a TOTP studio. Wearing a gold top, signing with the choir, could he be more uncool...oh yes he can...he's waving!
Now he's flirting with the flute player. Enough already!
After Mistletoe and Wine this is such a disappointment but at least its not "Millennium Prayer"

SNAP – Mary Had A Little Boy
Onto a proper turkey of 1990 next. The rap is bad. The chorus is a bloody nursery rhyme. Next..

NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK – This One’s For The Children
God take 3, pass the sick bucket.

VANILLA ICE – Ice Ice Baby
Fair play Mr Ice. Nails this live, great rap, great performance.

    BETTY BOO – 24 Hours
More fun from Ms Boo with a snappy little James Bond inspired video which is a lot of fun.

    1. I think Madonna ushered in that element of the 1990s best described as "leery". People think "ironic" when they think of the decade, but it was actually pretty sleazy too, new lads with their own mags, erotic thrillers at the cinema, youth TV finding new freedom to get down and dirty, etc.

    3. I went to Shania's 'Up!' tour concert at Wembley in 2003. My friends had seen her on an earlier tour and said it was the best concert they had ever been to. She spent the whole concert more or less bending down to sign autographs as the stage was 'in the round' and fans were allowed to leave their seats. It made for a very poor spectacle. For someone who released a song called 'Whose bed have your boots been under' she sure got too big for them!

  18. That was a great read. Chris Cowey's memory of 5ive getting above themselves was really funny. I'm really looking forward to 1991, yep included the re-boot. More extravagant sets, live vocals (Dina Carroll especially), the introduction of by satellite links. Mostly bad presenting but not entirely. Mark Franklin though only just out of school was for me one of the best presenters the show ever had.

  19. Listen to last Saturday’s ‘Pick of the Pops’ on Catch Up. Not the 1993 chart, but the 1976 chart which is just before the ToTP reruns started.

Listen without looking at what the songs are first. Some absolute classics in there, it’s an hour of pure joy! He doesn’t play the full top20 (Laurie Lingo and the Dipsticks miss out, but that’s probably a blessing!) but what he does play, wow! In fact, Laurie aside, the whole top20 is largely fantastic and what a contrast with where we’ve got to on the 1990 reruns where I usually struggle to find two songs in the top20 that I like!

Think I'll be bailing out soon like JohnG.

    1. I tend to listen to Pick Of The Pops on BBC Sounds, the audio equivalent of iPlayer. Is that the same as what you call Catch Up?

    2. Yep....getting confused with TV catch up!

  20. RIP 80s pop star and model Nick Kamen, died of cancer this week, only 59. Probably better known in this country for his jeans ad than his music, but he did have 1 and a half hits here. Big on the Continent (for a while).

    1. Shocking news, I remember when he came on the scene in 1986 first with the Levis ad, and then a record deal, and then TOTP in the blink of an eye.
