  1. Bruno is more dressed down than he normally is, but also tries too hard to be funny; he seems mystifyingly keen to big up the Bros performance, even though their career was about to go round the u-bend. Guru Josh starts us off this week, but sadly he has left the dancers at home this time, perhaps so his antics will receive more of the camera’s attention. It amuse me that they went to the trouble of giving the sax player a mic – did they really think anyone would be fooled? On video, Glo prowls around a swanky pad and agonises at the piano. Quite a nice song, though a little formulaic and not one of her best. Just a couple of weeks after this show was first broadcast, she had that terrible road accident which left her spine fractured, though happily she made a full recovery.

J.T. and the Big Family turn up in the studio this week, and the keyboard player is sporting a top hat which almost rivals the stovepipe affairs worn by the likes of Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The Innocence song has a nice, relaxed soul-dance vibe, with good vocals from Gee Morris, even if it isn’t doing anything new or exciting; I like the way that, in the video, her reflection sings the backing vocals back at her. Marc’s back, though sadly without his co-star in the video, Julie T Wallace, an actress who briefly tasted stardom in the late 80s before fading back into obscurity. Instead, he has one violinist with impressively huge hair, and another who has borrowed Gracie Stansfield’s cap for the occasion. It’s a typically melodramatic offering from Marc, but well sung and arranged.

My favourite song of the night next, a haunting Erasure tune that received much airplay at the time and still sounds good 30 years on. The video isn't quite so impressive - that disembodied blue hand is unsettling, and detracts from the music a bit. Dave didn't waste much time in hooking up with another female collaborator after the Eurythmics split, did he? A pleasant tune, which you can imagine being played at polite dinner parties, this came from an obsure Dutch film which is featured in the video. Judging by the plot synopsis on Wikipedia, it wasn't exactly a barrel of laughs...

It is finally Matt and Luke's turn next, and they seem determined to rival Kool and the Gang for the number of people they can cram on stage. There is a half-decent tune lurking somewhere among the layers of overproduction on this record, but it is hard to discern - it sounds as if the twins were trying desperately to move with the times by jumping on the dance bandwagon, with limited success. We finally get to see the Beats International video, and Lindy seems to have glammed up a bit more for it than she did for the studio performances. I made sure to turn my volume down for the playout song, as I cannot stand Love Shack and would gladly never hear it again, it's so annoying - if ever a song deserved the label "housewife classic", it's this one. The video is almost as irritating.

    1. The Eurythmics couldn't have been on the show more than a couple of weeks before, so I don't think they had split up at this point, as I guess Dave Stewart was trying out some other projects like doing this new solo stuff with Candy Dulfer, as there were still some more Eurythmics single releases on the way from the current 1990 album.

That said, I love this new project with Many Dulfer, as it was a totally different feel to the Eurythmics type of music, and probably Stewart needed to have more control and direction on his music, after several years of Eurythmics joint music direction with Lennox.

    2. Annie and Dave split in January 1990, although a couple more singles from their most recent album made the chart subsequently. Mind you, I was being a little facetious as I think Dave recorded this track with Candy Dulfer while the Eurythmics were still a going concern.

      Delete
  2. Well, Guru Josh, 1990 was time for the Guru for a few weeks at least, so you were partly correct. Interesting method of playing the keyboard - with his head.

Gloria gives us one of her near-identical boring ballads, going for the classy Quiet Storm market and airplay, but this never graduates to anything too vital.

Oh, those Italians are in the studio, and one of them turns out to be one of the KLF. Or maybe Ebenezer Goode. Or Screaming Lord Such. Model miming unconvincingly out front? Check. Not as chill out as intended.

Innocence with one of those "don't recall the name - oh, yeah, I remember" tunes I haven't heard from that day to this. It's OK, you can tell Soul II Soul had been an influence, but I'm already struggling to bring it to mind again.

Little Marc shows up to the studio with as much of a full orchestra as he's allowed (the days of the TOTP orchestra are long gone) for a prime slice of Continental-style melodrama. It does sound like he was coasting, and the lyrics are a shade embarrassing, but he was doing what he was good at and more power to him. Was that really Julie T. Wallace in the video? Because it didn't really look like her.

Best song of the night, and indeed one of the best songs of the year, is Erasure's Blue Savannah. Terrific, soaring melody, chiming production, evocative lyrics, ludicrous video, everything you wanted from these boys. It did very well, but should have been a No.1.

The only thing I remembered about Candy Dulfer, aside from her instrument of choice, was that she was quite attractive. After seeing this, that remains all I remember. Haven't seen the film in question, but for a few seconds was trying to place the tune in Betty Blue - wrong movie. Nice enough "question and answer" sax and guitar duet.

Bros with a song that sounded familiar, not because it was part of their signature sound, but because it was basically Too Much again. Running out of ideas? Certainly running out of hits. Matt (or is it Luke?) doing a creditable Fozzie Bear impersonation.

The Beats International video is surprisingly slick, I guess they'd made enough profit to shoot something with a high level of professionalism. Song remains a mishmash of old samples and vocals.

Gawd, B-52s with one of the most overplayed records known to humanity to end on, I put up with it to check out the video again after all these years. Well, they were having fun, anyway. "Your tin roof's rusted!" apparently means you're pregnant.

  6. Trev’s back, not dressed like an accountant for once.

Gosh, it’s Josh, not dressed like an accountant ever. What a shrinking violet. Crap chart forecast there afterwards, Trev.

Gloria Estefan as Sexy Napoleon amongst her outfits, with an undistinguished ballad which I still like.

Oh dear, here come more Italian chancers, one dressed like a Victorian Jazzie B. Merda.

The return of Innocence’s wet woman. Interesting freeze frames in the video where they obviously just told her to mime the lines one after the other with no gap and they’d stick the ‘breaks’ in between. Nice groove.

It’s Marc Almond at number 0029 with “Pinkfinger”. Nice ensemble on stage but missing the drummer.

Mid-mugshots: what the Hell was that seaside postcard photo for Shakin’ Stevens’ hit?

Erasure with a nice song and a video ruined by what looked like part of a castoff of the Blue Man Group.

David A. Stewart (pretentious, moi?) with a hit on his own Anxious label. Nice taking it in turns instruments-wise with Eye Candy.

Earth Wind and Goss with no Ken. Matt dressed like a right prawn. The record store bargain bin awaits you, lads.

An incorrect ‘up’ arrow in the mugshots for the non-mover at number one. Interesting cross-ankles dance there by Lindy.

Hands up here, I love “Love Shack” even though Fred Schneider fails to sing a note yet again. I’d rather have this than Michael Bolton any day.

    1. Shaky's "mugshot" wasn't a seaside postcard, it was a cartoon of him with characters from Viz comic. They had adopted him as their favourite pop star and referenced him every issue for a while. It was the 90s, prepare for mass irony.

      Delete
    2. Ah! Thanks for that. I think Viz also namechecked "That Mick Hucknall out of Simply Red" in the football cartoon strip "Billy The Fish".

      Delete
    3. arthur, i suspect that dave stewart's choice of official solo artist name was less down to being pretentious than concern over being confused for his namesake who had a number one hit with barbara gaskin a decade earlier?

also: candy is/was actually far more than just that of the eye variety, being highly-regarded in jazz circles both before this collaboration (she had already been playing for well over a decade at that point, despite her tender age) and after

      Delete
    4. plus as a result of being an avid reader of "viz" at the time, you were right regarding mick hucknall turning out as a striker for billy the fish's team fulchester rovers (whilst wearing his coat and baggy cap, and holding his cane!). in what was a satire of his musical career he started off scoring with an unstoppable 30-yard scorcher , but then contrived to do things like miss open goals (a la his "peer" ronnie rosenthal) and generally play with two left feet (like ian "wrightie" wright when he played for england)

      Delete
  7. Anyone else think Marc's track sounded like Attention Stockholm by Virna Lindt, only sung?

    ReplyDelete
  8. A quick bit of digging reveals that Innocence's singer was called Gee Morris, and the group managed seven more UK hits (two top 30, three top 40 and two top 75), none of which I have any recollection of.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Not a lot new, and not a lot worth hearing a second (or more) time...

    Gloria Estefan - dull ballad

Marc almond - a full play this time and I still like it (with a few tweaks it would have made a good Bond theme - maybe that’s why THX thought it reminded him of Attention Stockholm)

Erasure - really enjoyed this, but a really naff video

David a stewart - and another breaker I liked staying in my good books, loved the call and answer with guitar and sax

Bros - change of direction here, with an attempt to get into MJ territory. Have to admit it kept my interest enough to avoid the dreaded FF...

B52s - and we go out with one of my favourite songs that our band covers.

  10. Welcome to your Favourite fab pop show? Bruno all over the place tonight and phoning in his performance.

Guru is back and just the 2 of them this time.
    Great start to the show.

Here we are then with a beautiful song and classy video from Gloria Estefan.

TFF stuck at 36. So much better than that. Still no mention of Oleta Adams but we get her picture.

JT and the Big Hat up next. Plenty of samples going on here but not much else. Disappointing. Aah-yeah!

Bit more of the Innocence video. Nice enough tune. Is a cover? Sounds very Sade (with added dance beat). Don't mind this at all.

Shaky and Adam Ant last week, Marc Almond this week. The 80s are back! Marc in a fetching red velvet number. Angling for a Las Vegas residency I reckon.
This sounds better having heard a bit more of it but he has much better to come in 1991.

Was there no Black Betty video?

Erasure with one of their finest tunes. A nice mellow number. Seriously odd video. That blue hand freaks me out.

    Lily was Here. Fab-u-lous

Bros... still going...and filling the stage tonight. The drums are way too high in the mix here you can't make out the tune. I actually liked the radio version of this but don't know what version this is. Awful.

That Brits medley got to Number 2! I'll apologise again…

Video time for Beats and Lindy. She reminds me a bit of a young Clare Crogan (which is a good thing). Nice simple performance video.

B52s. Great stuff. Might have to check out the full video.

    1. Be grateful for small mercies, Morgie. "Black Betty" was another of those horrible Ben Liebrand re-mixes. We got away lightly.

      Delete
    2. I think there is a video for the original Black Betty (I always get it mixed up with Tap Turns on the Water), but I don't remember one for the remix.

      Delete
    3. The original 70s video for Black Betty (famous garden video) was shown a lot on Vintage TV until it closed down a couple of years ago, but I think the now 70s video channel which essentially replaced Vintage TV, does show it every so often:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_2D8Eo15wE

Ok, so if Arthur is correct the this new 1990 release is a remix, the above original video link has always been my go-to-video when I need a fix of this superb tune in my ears.

This song for me ranks as the next best thing after the contributions on the classic album Songs From The Big Chair.

    2. Just watched that video. Really great. I didn't actually start to watch The Chart Show every week without fail until that summer so missed quite a few videos around this time. Started to well up watching it! So tender and good natured. And such a beautiful melody and sentiment. The last moments of the record I've always found very affecting.

  13. Bruno made no impression on me at all this week so straight into the songs.

Guru Josh, Infinity (Time For The Guru)'; Or 'Time For The Grrrruuuaah!!') They've got it together enough to come back to the studio. This I think is the performance I recall. No dancers, just two blokes looking like they've rolled out of a healing tent out of their nuts. Head Guru's, 'God aren't I brilliant!' routine would be phenomenally annoying if the tune wasn't so gorgeous. Really had forgotten how good this one is.

Gloria Estefan, Here We Are; Sounds like the melody ideas left over from 'Don't Wanna Lose You'. Ok. What a fabulous jacket though! Surely the best to feature on the show since Jimi Hendrix.

    JT and the Big Family, Moments In Soul;
This was never going to be very effective in the studio with all the miming to slowed down vocals and spoken bits. The men are even more smarmy than in the video. I still like the record though.

    Innocence, Natural Thing
Alright. Hasn't grown on me any more than before.

Marc Almond, A Lover Spurned; Neither has this but it's always good to hear that voice. Some more very expensive looking clothing. That suit must've cost about as much as all the audience members' clothes put together. Recognised the lady in green from the performance of 'Something's Gotten Hold..' She also featured with the Manics when they did 'A Design For Life' on Jools' Hootenanny in 1997.

Erasure, Blue Savannah; Aaah this one! One of the singles of the year for me, in fact possibly a desert island disc as few records exude such beauty and optimism. Evoking all the post iron curtain / post cold war sense of hope, a track full of doors thrown open and sky blue possibilities. Wondrous. Video is borderline insane but that was always how I liked them.

David A Stewart feat Candy Dulfer, Lily Was Here; ...and these two still sound skill.

Bros, Madly In Love; I've heard quite enough from men in suits and baseball caps recently, thank you.

Beats International, Dub Be Good To Me
Good to see the video and the 1st half where they stand around looking faux serious to the spoken intro.

The B52s, Love Shack; Love this single. Why? Because it's joyous and daft. Because Kate Pierson has the best hairstyle on here since Chrissie Hynde was on singing 'I Go To Sleep'. Because Fred Schneider has got this far without bothering to even try to sing so why start now? Cindy Wilson. Because any mid teen birthday disco between '90 and '92 that didn't have this on the playlist was like the buffet table not having any cakes.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. i agree that "love shack" got played to death at the time, and may still be so on nostalgia radio stations (not that i would know, as i haven't listened to radio for nearly 20 years now). but unlike some here i have still not tired of it, and even now would leap out onto the dancefloor in the unlikely event i was in a club and it was played. and also back then it's cod-retro go-go feel was certainly a refreshing change to all the sample-heavy dance-oriented stuff that was dominating the charts at that point

      Delete
    2. I would also add that many DJs coupled up Love Shack with Groove Is In the Heart by Deelite which was also released in 1990, as the two songs were just superb when played one after the other, but if you ask me, Love Shack first followed by Groove Is In The Heart is the best order to play them.

      Delete
  14. A decent mixture this week, I'll always have a soft spot for Love Shack, overplayed or not. Madly in Love was such a weird Bros single choice as it has the exact same refrain as Too Much which was a hit only a few months' prior. For some reason iPlayer has messed up the episode order so when watching on autoplay I went straight from Sinead at number 1 to Beats International being a 'non mover'. It was only when the 01/03 ep kicked in after this one that I realised why the charts had seemed so odd.

  18. Quite liked this edition from Bruno Probably the best selection so far in 1990 for me.

Guru Josh - Infinity – Great start to the show but have to say visually something was missing from the last performance!

Gloria Estefan – Here we are – A little similar to previous hits maybe, but Gloria looks fab in her videos and this is enjoyable.

JT and the Big Family – Moments in Soul – A lot of nothing frankly, and what was the guy in the newspaper headline t-shirt all about?

Innocence – Natural thing – Also a lot of nothing

Mar Almond – A Lover Spurned – Fabulously slinky sound with Marc looking fetching in his red suit and the string players looking like real string players even if they were just going through the motions. The single was over 5 minutes long and features a spoken interlude from an uncredited female which makes the song even better. Only no29? Something wrong here if JT gets to no8.

Erasure – Blue Savannah – Nice tune which reminds me of something else. Best release since ‘A little respect’.

David A Stewart / Candy Dulfer – Lily was here – Much better than recent Eurythmics releases and very compelling. So it’s David A Stewart now rather than Dave Stewart? A bit like Clifford T Ward perhaps.
Bros – Madly in love – Diminishing returns, but the fans are still buying into the charts.

Beats International – Dub be good to me – Finally the video, and it’s not that different from the studio showings and still gets chopped!

B52s – Love Shack – Best playout for a long while. Wacky, catchy and good entertainment.

Misses – Bel’s in at no40 with the title track ‘Runaway Horses’ but gets no higher. Not the best track on the excellent album. Curiously ‘La Luna’ had been released as the second single and didn’t fare well. ‘Runaway Horses’ was followed by ‘Vision of You’ which is my favourite track on the album similarly not selling well. Then all of a sudden, single #5 ‘We want the same thing’ goes top10! Weird! No showing yet again for the Ben Liebrand / Ram Jam ‘Black Betty’. I hadn’t heard this version so looked it up on YT and it’s not an improvement on the 1977 original at all. Sounds like needle stuck in the groove at times. Finally, no breakers this week so we miss out completely on the excellent TFF ‘Advice for the young at heart’. Shame.

Gloria Estefan - Very dull indeed.

JT & The Big Family - As ever with Italian dance, I loved this at the time, though goodness knows how they got away with all the samples. I'm less excited it by it now, and the performance is laughable with the female singer a) Clearly not being Caron Wheeler and whoever it was who did the spoken bit at the start of 'Girl You Know It's True' and b) Unfamiliar with the words of the latter it would appear!

Innocence - Another act who had their best hits in this period that I love and nobody else seems to (see also The Beloved and Electribe 101) and this is an awesome track - the extended version that mixes the melody with 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' is really great.

Marc Almond - A typically dramatic song and performance and I've always had a soft spot for this tune.

Erasure - As a big Erasure fan (especially back then) I never really clicked with this one. So naturally it was the biggest hit from the album!

David A Stewart / Candy Dulfer - Very competently made, but still basically lift music.

Bros - I always thought this was rather clever, reusing the chorus of 'Too Much' for a completely different song. It's the mix by CJ Mackintosh that makes it though, the album version is less good.

B52s - I HATE this. A housewife song of the highest order.

  33. I'm hoping anonymous has a copy of whatever show in the 1990 run that has the unseen performance of Liza Minnelli that was mentioned in the Story Of 1990 documentary.

I'm hoping it's tacked onto the end of the recorded show VT like some of the other gems we've seen in these archive versions.

I had that Liza Minnelli album back in the day and loved its various styles throughout that mixed dance with orchestral numbers. Fingers crossed!
