Who's That Top of the Pops?

So, the big surprise tonight is that BBC4 broadcast the 23rd July 1987 edition of Top of the Pops instead of the 16th July! It appears there was a technical issue with the playout of the 16th, so there is a chance we will get to see tonight's scheduled edition tomorrow, maybe!

Mad-onna!

23/07/87  (Janice Long & Simon Mayo)

Boy George – “Sold” (26)
Getting tonight's live show underway with the title track from his top 30 album, and it went up two more places.

Atlantic Starr – “Always” (3) (video)
At its peak.

Judy Boucher – “You Caught My Eye” (35)
Her follow up to Can't Be With You Tonight (a good title for the 16th July edition!) and it peaked at number 18.

Los Lobos – “La Bamba” (5) (video)
Will be number one next week.

Errol Brown – “Personal Touch” (37) (breaker)
Peaked at number 25.

Samantha Fox – “I Surrender (To The Spirit Of The Night)” (34) (breaker)
Also peaked at number 25.

Marillion – “Sugar Mice” (33) (breaker)
Peaked at number 22.

Beastie Boys – “She’s On It” (20) (breaker)
Peaked at number 10.

Luther Vandross – “I Really Didn’t Mean It” (29) (breaker)
Peaked at number 16.

Shakin’ Stevens – “A Little Boogie Woogie (In The Back Of My Mind)” (13)
Went up one more place.

Madonna – “Who’s That Girl?” (1) (video)
First and only week at number one.

Boogie Box High – “Jive Talkin’” (10) (video/credits)
Yes Simon, it is. And it went up three more places.

Next up is July 30th (probably).

  3. Well, it's a bit barseackwards, but at least we won't be missing what should have been shown tonight. A pity, but it hasn't ruined my evening, we did get an edition.

Boy George, straight outta er, wherever Boy George hails from, with an ill-advised rap, complete with cod-American accent (the days of The Streets and Loyle Carner never seem so far away!). The chorus isn't so bad, but this does sound painfully unhip in its committed lyrics and George spends too much time with his backing singers.

Atlantic Starr followed by a one-woman Atlantic Starr, Judy looking and sounding like she had been booked to sing at a wedding. Not very exciting, but I'm sure she remembers her fifteen minutes of fame fondly.

This episode's first movie tune, and Lou Diamond Philips cast as Richie Valens despite not looking anything like him, or indeed being Hispanic. Still, it's not a bad biopic as these things go, and it is a classic song left unruined by Los Lobos.

Don't think we see Errol or Smamfa do their tunes in full, the former a bog standard bit of plastic 80s soul, the latter apparently a rerelease of Touch Me with different lyrics.

Shaky, Shaky, Shaky, what are you up to? The return of the greased up topless male strippers, anyway, if anything even more screamingly camp this time around. Despite it, this does have a catchy chorus, but who can concentrate on that?

Second movie tune, Madge with the theme from one of her utterly dreadful star vehicles, it's difficult to describe the misplaced self-regard she has in Who's That Girl? It's like a grotesque parody of screwball, not that her fans are bothered. The song itself is easy enough on the ear, with that Latin influence, but kind of weak compared to many of her other hits.

Boogie Box George, a more or less straightforward copy of the Bee Gees original, a pointless exercise and didn't they appear in blackface when a photograph was demanded? Or is that my memory playing tricks? Video looks like a school animation project.

  4. boy george: one that has completely slipped my mind, if it was ever there in the first place. no wonder this bombed when it mostly consisted of him just ranting on about how selfish and uncaring the tories were (some things never change) rather than doing any actual singing

judy boucher: take away the "reggae" rhythm, and this could be country and western. hideous

los lobos: does los lobos mean "the porkers" in spanish? an old chestnut pretty much done on autopilot, presumably for the biopic of richie valens (the big bopper one has still yet to be made to my knowledge), the only interesting bit being the folky picking at the end

boogie box high: george michael could never get his old mate david austin in the charts, but here he helps out his cousin to that effect. like the miracles' "love machine" on the first wham album, an utterly pointless cover-by-numbers done presumably as a tip of the hat to his musical roots?

  5. Hi folks. Not sure if or when I'll be back on here again properly (lucky for you), as I haven't had the time or patience to sit down and enjoy the episodes in recent weeks, due to my dad being hospitalised and then sadly passing away this week.

    10. Not looking promising at the mo, Wilby, but thanks. I won't go into details but there's a lot of correspondence to handle on behalf of my mum which I'll need to do at home in the evenings and weekends, and I've come back to a backlog of three or four days in the office and no-one else knows how to process my work. Very little time to properly relax, let alone watch a half hour show and then type and print a critique, sadly.

  6. A second outing for the entertaining Janice - Boy Mayo partnership, but sadly they wouldn't be paired together again after this. They are clearly enjoying themselves though, not least when indulging in some Spanish "cultural appropriation" after Los Lobos and when Janice just walks off at the end to supposedly get to her radio show.

Boy George first up, with a supporting cast of what feels like hundreds and an anti-Thatcher song I don't remember at all. The semi-rapped verses are pretty dreadful, but it does come to life a little bit in the chorus. Judy Boucher returns, but this is another dreary effort with only marginally more life in it than the previous hit, accompanied by another solitary, static performance - thankfully, this was her final TOTP appearance. Los Lobos play a fairground, interspersed with clips from the Richie Valens biopic. A good version of this classic, and much better recorded than Valens' original. I have never seen the film, but given that he was just 17 when he died it must surely have been a bit of a stretch to make a full movie out of his life story.

A bumper crop of five breakers this week, two of which we won't see again. On the basis of this rather limp effort, it's no surprise that Errol Brown's solo career proved a short-lived affair. Lucifer Dross, by contrast, had plenty more hits to come after this UK breakthrough, which came some six years after he moved from being a backing vocalist to launch himself as a solo artist. This is a typically bland offering from him, of a kind that would become wearily familiar in the years to come. Inexplicably, Shaky is invited back for another embarrassing outing with his friends from "Torso," as we discover that they are called this time, though I'm not convinced that any of their torsos are that impressive. A solitary week at the top for Madge, and then a rather dull video to accompany a cover that sees George Michael helping out his cousin and unsuccessfully trying to disguise his vocals. I don't think this is a bad version, actually, and it would turn out to herald the return to the charts of the Gibb brothers themselves a couple of months later...

    1. La Bamba (the film) mostly makes up a conflict between Richie and his brother to provide the drama. In real life, apparently the kid was most anguished about being Latino, but unable to speak Spanish, but that wouldn't have made quite as interesting a story (!).

    2. Back in 1987, Janice Long occupied Radio 1's Monday-Thursday weekday slot from 7.30pm, therefore with a live Top of the Pops coming off air at the very time her radio show was due to commence, I'm fairly sure she'd have had a stand-in on that particular evening.

      Delete
    3. On the Genome site, Janice is listed as presenting her R1 show as normal on this day, so maybe TOTP wasn't live after all, or someone else filled in for her on the radio until she arrived?

THX - thanks for the info, I guessed there would be some padding and creative licence involved!

  7. Everyone seemed to skip Atlantic Starr, sitting quite nicely at No.3 this week, and as Angelo correctly mentions, at their peak. This song is just incredible, and possibly one of the greatest love songs of all time, and for sure the greatest of 1987 on the romantic front. I've been listening to it over and over again in the last couple of days since the TOTP showing, and I'm not getting tired of it I must say.

In fact this was one of four superb American videos in the top ten this week, and if that wasn't enough, the Beastie Boys in the Breakers section served up another humdinger of a video from across the Atlantic, with a bevvy of bikini lovelies on some American beach with a stereo, in the days before light wifi speakers that everyone takes to the park or beach nowadays.

If you add in the other two video in the Breakers, ie, Errol Brown and Samantha Fox, it was probably the best TOTP show ever for quality videos, not counting the playout and awful video by Boogie Box High. I would have preferred Rydell High (the Grease movie High School).

Back to the superb videos, and I really liked the Errol Brown hottie that was in the bar attracted to him, and I was a bit disappointed when their intended kiss failed at the end of the Breakers clip. I wouldn't have minded some lip action with her. Good Lord, anyone know who she is?

Samantha Fox still in her UK stint since 1986, and before her move over to the US later in the year to join forces with Full Force, who took her to top 3 status with I Wanna Have Some Fun, and Naughty Girls Need Love Too. Still, this new Breakers entry was probably her best single to date which in her UK phase, and l just loved the video clip on the Breakers. I must try to see this and the Erroll Brown video this weekend, as I got the buzz for them now... tap, tap ,tap!

  16. I definitely watched this one on broadcast as I recall being surprised that the extract from ‘Sugar Mice’ was the middle eight section. What I don’t recall was being totally bewildered by the continued ignoring of the fabulous Heart song which had now reached no6 after a 9 week climb up the charts. Getting the Billy Joel treatment!

Boy George – Sold – I couldn’t bring myself to listen to this despite Janice’s hyped up intro.

Atlantic Starr – Always – After the baffling bombing of the excellent Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam single that topped the US charts recently (it was no87 this week having peaked at no82), here is one US chart toper that the UK didn’t miss out on…thank goodness!

Judy Boucher – You caught my eye – After the almost total slating of Judy’s previous single and me being the lone supportive voice, I wonder what everything makes of this follow up? For me its not so memorable, but a nice reggae tune none the less.

Five Breakers this week. Wow! Los Lobos – totally irrelevant to me and a completely pointless no1. Errol Brown – Sheesh! I nearly choked on my coffee over this really sexy video!! I’ll have to check out the complete film on YT! Definitely a case of ‘you sexy thing’. Samantha Fox – A return to the style of her first single and despite the nicking of the Rainbow song title I really like this. Marillion – A classic. One of their very best singles. Great video and a Steve Rothery guitar solo to die for. Beastie Boys – Not even an anti-climax after Marillion; more a leap off the cliff. I don’t get the appeal at all. Luther Vandross – An ok kind of song that I can take or leave.

Shakin’ Stevens – A little boogie woogie – A non-mover and the second appearance…were they short of studio acts this week?

Madonna – Who’s that Girl – Just the one week at the top, but infinitely preferable to what was to follow.

Boogie Box High – Jive Talkin’ – Almost a facsimile of the original so not quite sure what the point of this was?

  20. So definitely watching this is the right order.. Even if a few days behind.

A slim and sexy Simon Mayo and a super cheeky Janice Long introduce a Boy George song that has been absent from my life since its release.. HMMM. Love the chorus, not sure about the spoken verses. The backing singers are fab, especially the hair. 😀 Great performance to open the show. This could really grow in me.

Atlantic Starr. Great ballad. Glad this did well. Why haven't we heard Heart yet?

Judy Boucher back again.. Amazed her last song did well and now we've gone all reggae/country which is not an improvement. She must of had her fans though. Bet Steve Wright used to play this a lot. Seriously though is that set a prototype for Star Gate. 😀

There's a song called Sugar Mice? I love them.

Los Lobos storming up the charts. Who ate all the pies? Los Lobos! Looks like a before and after video. 😀 Was singing along though so obviously the song did its trick.

I think Janice is embarrassing Simon.

    Breakers:
Errol on his own. Not sure why as this is just Hot Chocolate in all but name. Seems OK.
Sam Fox back again already. Law of diminishing returns at this point. Poor.
Marillion with the sugar mice song. Gonna add this to my Xmas playlist as I always get sugar mice for Xmas. 😀
Luther Vandross. Great voice. Song is a bit over produced and he will do much better.
Beastie Boys. Doing alright for themselves.. Sexist crap again.

Look away now... Shaky is back. And Torso dressed in plastic. Oh shaky what were you thinking.

Madonna at the top. Give the film a miss though Simon. What would Mark Kermode say. Nice to see more of the video this week.

It is him Simon. We all know. Great tune.

  24. If I can interrupt the download chat...not that I'e much to say about this uninspiring edition....

Boy George - 87 has given us some real duffers, and this must also be high up the list. Embarassing, presumably drug influenced rubbish.

Judy Boucher - Amazing how she managed to have a follow-up. One of her songs was bad enough.

Los Lobos - It's an OK song, I can take it or leave it.

Breakers - 2 we won't see again I gather - no great loss regarding Errol Brown or Luther, though the latter is pleasant enough. Sadly this means we have to endure The Beastie Boys yet again presumably though?

Boogie Box High - What a really cheap video! I know they didn't want to give away who was singing, but they could surely have done better.

  35. Wow, I'm picking up some bad vibes here today.
Firstly, I would like to thank Angelo for this great blog.
I would also like to thank Anonymous not only for the older shows but also the more recent missing editions supplied over the past few months.
I would also like to thank all of the completists and archivists who have by my reckoning provided in the region of 120 missing shows to the blog since it began in earnest a few years ago and I'm certain that some will be in a position to assist with the upcoming 4 in a row that will be required shortly.
Having said all that, I'm still on the scrounge. I was wondering if you have any of the following shows in higher res Anonymous: 23/11/78, 9/3/79, 29/3/79, 11/9/80, 23/10/80, 6/11/80, 20/11/80 and 25/12/80. I have all of your previous uploads of the shows apart from a decent one of 6/11/80 which I would appreciate in any file size.
    Thank you!

  36. not all those are avalible in newer higher quality here's what i have, not uploaded all as you say you have previous uploads.

    https://we.tl/t-QUAwUxLVCe

and yes does seem a bad vibe around lol, but as angelo said share on here i will continue to do so and ignore the constant moaning, maybe i'll withold some of the upcoming smith episodes??

    ReplyDelete
  37. Please, please just try to ignore the constant whinging from the minority who seem to think that any conversation outside of a straight bog standard review of the episode should be stamped out. If it's not moaning about uploading episodes, its moaning about the quality of the music played, its moaning about Mike Smith, or, quite frankly, seems to be moaning about bloody anything that that doesn't meet their narrow list of things to like. I thoroughly enjoy watching ALL these shows, to see and hear music and acts that I might not have seen for decades, I greatly appreciate having them to keep in as high a quality as possible and I find it interesting to read about others think of the shows that they presumably enjoy as well, otherwise you have to wonder why they bother watching in the first place. But the constant whinging from certain quarters is really starting to grate now. Maybe certain individuals might want to question whether their continuing use of the blog is really what they want to do, seeing as it seems to cause them so much stress and upset during their time here …?

  38. Thanks Anonymous!
You were saying earlier to focus on 1976 to the end of 1980. To save some time and possible duplication, I think that if you have any of the following in higher res it will cover just about all that's required up to the end of 1980. I'm sure Brie or someone will correct me if I've missed out on anything. Again I have all of your previous uploads of these. After that I'm sure I and many others would be delighted to move on to Mike Smith. The shows are: 12/4/79, 26/4/79, 17/5/79, 8/11/79, 22/11/79, 6/3/80, 29/5/80, 4/9/80 and 2/10/80.
    A huge thanks from me!

    2. You're a star Anonymous, thank you.
This is a TOTP blog and I'm here for the music. I don't have much time for the current shows but I have respect for all and you will never hear me describe any of the shows as 'Piss Poor'. I also have respect for the dead and a recent comment made on here about Ranking Roger being Jonathan Woss's favourite pop star was despicable.
      Peace and love to all!

      Delete
    3. i see the above concerns me, so in reply: i did not make up the joke about ranking roger and jonathan woss - it was something i remembered reading or hearing someone (maybe danny baker?) saying long ago after mr ross first came to prominence. it was not intended as disrespect or malice towards roger, just making light of what are unfortunate circumstances - it wouldn't have surprised me if roger himself (like many overgrown schoolboys of our generation) found the inference somewhat humourous if he was ever aware of it?

as to my comments on the quality or otherwise of the shows themselves: well everyone's entitled to an opinion!

      Delete
    4. “just making light of what are unfortunate circumstances”

“i'd like to point out that those who participate for that reason were here first!”

      Please calm down.

      Delete
  39. in response to the above: correct me if i'm wrong, but is not the whole point of this blog to review and analyse the content of each show? and as such, i'd like to point out that those who participate for that reason were here first! apart from finding all the posts submitted about this edition and that edition on the internet as interesting as watching paint dry, it also means it's possible to miss a related comment about that particular show's content as a result of not being able to see the wood for the trees!

hopefully i'm not the only regular contributor here who feels "our" blog is being hi-jacked in a cuckoo-in-the-nest situation (guys, if you feel likewise then don't hesitate to agree!), and that discussion on availablity of unrelated archive editions of the show should take place elsewhere on the internet?

however in the end it's angelo's blog, so if he wants to give the completists carte blanche to submit their doggerel, then that's his choice. however, i suspect if so then that could mean the end of the blog as we know it?

    1. On the specific issue of the comments relating to show links, I think the problem lies with the way the blog pages are structured; if it was possible to "topic tag" comments and filter them, then blog users could just see the topics that interested them and screen out everything else. However, I guess that probably isn't possible technically and, as this is Angelo's blog, I am happy to abide by whatever rules regarding comments that he chooses to set, or not to set!

As to the more general comments above about "bad vibes," I don't really see that myself. I have been contributing to this blog for the last five years, and I think the regulars who post here have virtually always treated each other with respect and respected each other's opinions. That is why I have chosen to post here rather than somewhere like Digital Spy, where there has often been a genuinely nasty and unpleasant atmosphere. Music, and indeed Radio 1 DJs, are highly subjective topics and it is only natural that people are not going to like every presenter and every song, and I have no problem with them saying so; indeed, having a range of different opinions makes reading people's comments more interesting. You don't necessarily have to enjoy the content of every show to still get enjoyment out of the repeat run, either; while I think the overall quality is lower at the moment than in the early 80s, I am still getting a lot out of the shows we are now seeing because we have reached a point where I remember watching them the first time around, so a strong feeling of nostalgia is at play.

I would also say to those who don't seem happy with the standard of some of the comment at present - why not join in on a more regular basis yourselves? It would be interesting to hear your views on the shows and the music.

    2. Nicely put, John. I'll only say, I'm not here for a fight, and I have never had one on here, we all respect each others' opinions even when we disagree violently. I appreciate the "contraband" when a missing episode is supplied, but I'm here for the chat. We've been pretty easygoing with each other for years, I hope that won't change.

      Delete
    3. Absolutely, THX, a fight is the last thing that I want and, on the whole, the atmosphere here is very harmonious, friendly and welcoming, particularly for new members - compared to some blogs and forums, this place is heaven! you should have tried giving an opinion on AtEase, the old (now defunct) Radiohead fan site … it was horrific! But people have different ways of enjoying these shows and that needs to be respected. I'm fed up with feeling like I'm being (sometimes quite strongly) told that its all piss poor music and there's nothing worth watching on the current run - I watch the programmes for the whole nostalgia of the thing and, alright, the music might not be your cup of tea, but this is my childhood that's being rubbished and it really starts to grate when your repeatedly told that its all a load of rubbish. Yes, there is only one forum and, yes, it doesn't lend itself easily to the splitting of topics but, is it really too much hassle just to skip the posts that don't interest? They're fairly easy to distinguish! see a load of dates - it's a 'collection' post; see a lengthier, usually split into paragraphs post - it's comment and review. I'm a historian and archivist myself and that part of the blog is what I tend to drift more to myself, but it would be a crying shame to end up splitting off into separate groups as it all seems to complement each other so nicely. There's more than enough room for everyone with their own individual tastes and interests. But I would add that, whatever you like or dislike, the level of bitching at certain DJ's has become very distasteful. In particular, the abuse levelled against Mike Smith recently was nothing short of disgraceful. Fine, you don't like him or his presenting style and you're free to express that, but the vitriol he received was just downright nasty on what is, as repeatedly noted by myself and others, a friendly, respectable and respectful blog. I've said my piece. I haven't contributed much to the discussions previously (mainly because my schedule means that I quite frequently don't get to see the shows until sometimes a good couple of weeks after broadcast, by which time talk has moved on to more recent airings), but I appreciate your thoughts, John, and will try to interact more. Maybe we can all give trying to give a bit more leeway to each others preferences a go …?

    4. Well said....

    5. Matt - I'm surprised you think Smitty has come in for vitriolic attack on this blog. He has certainly received some stick on occasion, but I don't think anything beyond the pale has been said, and he has also received praise when posters feel that his presentation warrants it. In any case, I hope you are able to participate more often in future, and give us your perspective on some of the shows, at least.

    6. as it's been pointed out here before, the alleged reason for the TOTP smith non-signing contract fiasco is that the man himself wasn't exactly proud of his work on the show. so hardly any surprise he gets a bit of flak around here! my personal beef with the guy is that in retrosepect it's quite clear he was just using the show (and deejaying in general) as a stepping stone to the higher echelons of general light entertainment (following in the footsteps of his mentor tidybeard), rather than having any actual interest in the music he was playing or presenting

  40. Don't suppose anyone has a better copy of the Mike Smith/Richard Skinner edition 26/1/84? Its the classic show where Madonna and Cyndi Lauper both make their debut. I have an off air copy which was kindly uploaded at the time but would be lovely to see a better quality version of it! And to add..love this blog..have been a lurker (think that's the right description!) of the site since it began. It was after all the site that coined the description of the screen in the studio the 'Toppotron' and i still call it that today when I watch the older episodes! Keep it going folks and as the kid (jenson) would say..good love to you all!

  41. Hi Wayne,
Yes it's a very good show. The best one from 1984 for me. This is a cleaned up copy of the same off air recording. I think it's a little better than the previous upload. Perhaps Anonymous might have a better copy?
