ReplyDeleteGreat to see this DLT episode, thanks Angelo and "Darnell" (whoever you are??) ;-). Always good to see a bit of Judas Priest as well, didn't happen too often on Top of the Pops.

ReplyDeleteI don't know the Osmond song at all
ReplyDeleteCharlie, that Osmonds song had been on the show just six months previously! It was performed in wooden fashion by Steve Voice in a 'new release' slot on a Tone-presented show in July 1978 and, thankfully, both versions of the song avoided chart status.
ReplyDeleteSome excellent stuff on this show - Ian Dury and Blondie of course, opening banker Dr. Feelgood with their best, and Judas Priest showing ELP how to use a gong and taking the lead in the eye-watering tightest trews stakes.
Phoebe Snow should have performed "Weather Report" with Earth, Wind and Fire! Poor soul obviously didn't know where to put herself in the instrumental bit. Still, a great voice, and Phoebe sadly passed away three years ago having suffering terribly.
This is one of the few 'postponed' episodes that I'm not that bothered about missing. There was nothing particularly thrilling on here - Dr Feelgood being the best of the bunch I think.
ReplyDeleteI thought Phoebe Snow did a good job with Every Night, shame it didn't make the top 30.
ReplyDeleteAnd Donny and Marie were good value, making the most out of a not so great song, they at least breathed some life into it, you could tell they were seasoned pros at this point in time.
Viewed in the cold light of 2014, DLT is skating on thin ice here, although I can't help feeling that it's all premeditated and not in the league of "You weren't expecting that were you? Neither was I" from last week.
ReplyDeleteA good 'bit of everything' show I thought, shame that UK Gold saw fit to chop out DLT's link into Legs & Co - something I always find entertaining.
The Doll 'Desire Me' - I've always 'half-liked' this, but now having seen it in the context of its era it is becoming a real 'grower'. A couple of years ahead of its time?
as those familiar with my comments know, as a sort-of protest against the yewtree witch trials, with the rare exception i don't watch the internet contraband editions. so disappointed to miss out on
ReplyDeletea: dr feelgood (one of my favourite-ever guitar solos - can't help but get out the old air axe whenever i hear it!)
b: judas priest (i was never a big fan of metal, but i liked them for their showmanship. i even went to see them live around this time as i had read that rob halford would crack a whip over the audience's heads - sadly by the time they played my local theatre he had been banned from doing so in an early example of "health and safety" action, which as everyone knows now stops anyone from doing anything! however, i did see him get to ride his harley onstage, even though it was obvious he would never give peter fonda and dennis hopper sleepless nights!)
anyway, hopefully they'll show them again in future "untainted" shows...?
I was reading an article recently that said the Blockheads were the musicians on the Frankie Goes To Hollywood album.
ReplyDeleteJust thought I would share that :-)
nice to see other sites material ripped off here like the running orders and photos - bad form
