(1) VENGABOYS – We’re Going To Ibiza! (from Sheffield) (and credits)
Here with their second and final number one, and it topped the chart for one week.

Whoa indeed Angelo, great picture this week, Vengaboys tick all the boxes for whoa and this could be No.1 forever if that was possible. Just check out the gorgeous two-piece on the girl in the shiny white outfit. Makes my weekend that does! Why are they called Vengaboys when they are girls?
ReplyDeleteThunderbugs - Good Lord, finally a classy girl-group not in the usual non-musician types like The Spice Girls and Steps, but these girls look really talented, sexy and fun, and real performers. No.5 is not high enough, and should have got Top 3 at least.
Considering the show was in Sheffield as part of TOTP on tour, it was great to have Sheffield pop icon Phil Oakey in a completely different entourage than we were used to with Susan and Jo from the Human League in the 80s and 90s. This new eclectic bunch of musicians on stage with Oakey made the tune come off very well I thought.
Lolly - preferred Toni Basil 1982 original and dancing, but will give Lolly and her dancers are thumbs up for a good try to win us over as viewers.
Chart rundown - new entry for Leftfield & Afrika Bambaata at No.7, with the news that Bambaata passed away earlier this week, RIP. I only remember Bambaata for the collaboration with UB40 in 1988 with Wreckless which was a great dance floor number and underachieved:

I hope our friend Rob resumes TOTP2 1999 editions
ReplyDeleteI totally didnt remember THUNDERBUGS – Friends Forever, until it got to the chorus.
ReplyDeleteI would have had them as American, not British if I just heard the vocal.
And oooooooh Emma Ledden
Yeah, I thought Emma Ledden was brilliant on this her only episode of TOTP presenting. Not sure why she had no more, but could have easily have replaced Gail Porter for my weekly viewing. Nice evening dress!
DeleteOne of the best 1999 episodes for a long time, with only one dud (step forward LFO). I liked Thunderbugs - pity they never came to anything.
